JA in a Day at Maree Farring Elementary / Middle

What is JA in a Day? JA in a Day is a special delivery method that facilitates the partnership between a the University of Maryland School of Social Work and Maree Farring Elementary / Middle School, one of the schools that feeds the high schools served by the SWCOS Community Schools initiative. Volunteers combine their firsthand experience with JAs existing curriculum and interactive learning tools to help educate and inspire youth about the connection between education and success in the workplace. A typical JA in a Day classroom experience for a group of volunteers usually lasts between 4-5 hours, and provides a great team-building experience for student groups. The opportunity to engage in direct service with elementary school students as well as follow up research that gauges the learning gains and behavior changes that result from exposure to JAs financial literacy programming is a unique chance for students to directly measure the impact that they have on the students. The long-term goal for this partnership is to have yearly JA in a Day programs fueled by student volunteers at all feeder schools that will have a measurable impact on the SWCOS community schools. JA in a Day is different from other JA programs only in that the entire elementary school is covered over the course of one day in the classroom. At the end of the day, the students will have completed all five JA lessons meeting the requirements of MSDEs financial literacy curriculum standards. What does JA in a Day look like for a Volunteer? Approximately 5 hour commitment, and volunteers can teach solo or in pairs Volunteers meet in the morning to enjoy coffee and a snack. Volunteers are met by student ambassadors who will accompany them to their classroom. Volunteers deliver hands-on, age appropriate & easy to use lessons. Materials & lessons are provided by JA prior to the volunteer experience. Teachers assist volunteers as needed with lesson delivery.
