I) Design of under tray for road cars. [catiav5 + phoenics] This design is based on the most important challenge that automotive industry is facing now. The project is on aerodynamics. This design is done concentrating only on the undercover plate and complete redesigning of the car is not concentrated. The necessity of under tray for road cars is explained in detail with simulations. The design and analysis are done using two tools that are catia and phoenics. Solid edge is a supportive tool used to change the formats of the files. This project is mainly to reduce the lift without increasing the drag. 2) Design and analysis of a connecting rod for the 117kw six cylinder turbocharged diesel engine. [catiav5 + Ansys]

The main objective of this work was to explore weight reduction opportunities for a forged steel connecting rod in Ashok Leyland Bharat Stage-II engines. This has entailed performing a detailed load analysis. An optimization study was performed on a steel forged connecting rod with a consideration for improvement in weight and production cost. The introduction of piston cooling nozzles in AL engines provides scope for eliminating the oil hole in the connecting rod and thereby reducing the size 'of the ' I ' section. Furthermore, the existing connecting rod can be replaced with a new connecting rod with modified I-section. Literature survey suggests cyclic loads comprised of static tensile and compressive loads are often used for design and optimization of connecting rods. However, in this study weight optimization is performed under a cyclic load comprising dynamic tensile load and static compressive load as the two extreme loads. Therefore, this work has further dealt with two subjects, first, the connecting rod modeling, force calculations and the second is Finite Element Analysis. 3) FEA and optimization of refrigerator structure. [catiav5 + Nast ran] In this project, Pro-E/ Catiav5 3D cad models of refrigerator shelf and entire refrigerator assembly were imported to hyper mesh as an iges format. The models were meshed in hyper mesh and boundary conditions were applied. The meshed part with applied boundary conditions was exported to Ansys to determine the maximum displacement, maximum stress and deflections at specified locations.

[Ansys]

Static and dynamic analysis of a STEERING LEVER LINK has to be carried out. The steering system in addition to directing the vehicle in a particular direction must be arranged geometrically in such a way so that the wheels undergo true rolling motion without slipping scuffing. Moreover, the steering must be light, stable with certain degree of self-adjusting ability. The purpose of these two analysis is finding out the structural behavior and natural frequencies. Studying of the material properties.

9) Design of a plastic master cylinder. [Catiav5] Maximizing of vehicles performance is achieved by strict weight reduction. Making the car lighter will improve the vehicle's handling and performance. The manufacturers are focusing on reducing the weight of the vehicle by offering lighter material to the body panels. From
2

many years automotive body panels are manufactured using cast iron but nowadays it's been replaced by aluminum, magnesium and titanium. In this project, we design a plastic master cy linder to reduce to weight. 10) Aerodynamics of a ahmed body. [phoenics]. [Catiav5/Pro-E + Ansys]

The main objective behind undertaking the project "Analysis of Disc Brake Rotor" is to study and evaluate the performance of disc brake under severe braking conditions and thereby assisting in disc brake rotor design and analysis. ANSYS 11.0 is a dedicated general purpose Finite Element package used for determining the temperature, stress and strains. ANSYS is a flexible and cost effective tool. ANSYS is used in industries in order to solve several mechanical problems. In this project, an Axis-Symmetric disc brake rotor is considered for analysis. Flange width of 8mm, 10mm and 12mm made of Cast Iron, Aluminum and Aluminum composite are considered. A Coupled Field Analysis (Transient Thermal Analysis and Structural Analysis) is performed to obtain the Temperature Distribution and Von Mises Stress. After the Coupled field analysis is performed, a graph is plotted between the distance and temperature. An attempt is made to suggest the best combination of material and flange width for disc brake rotor, which yields a low temperature variation across the rotor disc and minimum von mises stress possible.

[Ansys]

Helical spring is widely used in railway wagon for absorbing shock and havoc, for negotiating the vehicle on the curve for bearing the outer and inner wheel. The helical spring does not bearing carrying capacity load directly but some suspensions and buffers are provided for wagon body under this suspension the helical spring acts and bears the load. Wheel and axle are indirectly bearing the load due to helical springs provided on each wheel and axle. The helical spring are provided on different wagon systems and number of coils due to the maximum carrying load of the wagons. So railway wagons are having compressed and circular springs depending upon the types of wagons. The results are validated using ANSYS software

20) Design and analysis of a leaf spring. [Ansys]

The objective of this present work is to estimate the deflection, stress and mode frequency induced in the leaf spring of an army jeep design. The emphasis in this project is on the application of computer aided analysis using finite element concept. The component chosen for analysis is a leaf spring which is an automotive component used to absorb vibrations induced during the motion of vehicle. It also acts as a structure to support vertical loading due to the weight of the vehicle and payload. Under operating conditions, the behavior of the leaf springs complicated due to its clamping effects and interleaf contact, hence its analysis is essential to predict the displacement, mode frequency and stresses. The leaf spring, which we are analyzing, is a specially designed leaf spring used

in military jeeps. This spring is intended to bare heavy jerks and vibrations reduced during military operations. A model of such jeep has been shown in this project report.

A model of the leaf spring is designed in CA TIA. In analysis part the finite element of leaf spring is created using solid tetrahedron elements, appropriate boundary conditions are applied, material properties are given and loads are applied as per its design, the resultant deformation, mode frequencies and stresses obtained are reported and discussed.

This project mainly deals with the design, analysis and manufacture of piston. Piston is a component of reciprocating engines, reciprocating pumps, gas compressors and pneumatic cylinders among other similar mechanisms. In an engine, its purpose is to transfer force from expanding gas in the cylinder to the crankshaft via a piston rod and/or connecting rod. Here the piston is designed, analyzed and the manufacturing process has been studied. Piston temperature has considerable influence on efficiency, emission, performance of the S1 engine. Purpose of the investigation is measurement of piston transient temperature at several points on the piston, from cold start to steady condition and comparison with the results of finite element analysis. In this project the piston is modeled and assembled with the help of CATIA software and the component is meshed and analysis is done in ANSYS software and the thermal and static behavior is studied and the results are tabulated. The various stresses acting on the piston under various loading conditions has been studied. 22) Analysis of a radome. [Ansys]

Radome is a protection for the antenna against the environment such as dust, rain etc., It is made of Fibre Reinforced Plastic as it transparent to electro magnetic waves and at the same time the properties of FRP materials are much more than metal properties. The dimensions of the model have been arrived at by theoretical methods. Then the model is generated & FE analysis is carried out which will predict all the realities about the behaviour of the components. The pressure is applied on the front half of the radome as is the case when the radome is mounted on an aircraft and the wind pressure acts only on the front half. This case study is done to show the advantage of FEM in designing the radome. Finally the theoretical analysis and Finite Element Analysis are compared to check the correctness. To carryout the above analysis the drawings are generated in Pro-E & Analysis System (ANSYS) is used for Finite Element Analysis.
