Thisbookisaimedatgeneralreaders,andnotprofessionalsorothersalreadytrainedin Mesoamericanculture.Theworkisdividedintoeightchapters,thefirstofwhichisanamusing introduction.Thelastisawellconceivedconclusion.Thebookhaditsoriginsinaqueryto AvenifromayoungpersoninEnglandwhowastrulyconcernedthathisyounglifemightbecut shortbytheendingoftheworldpredictedbytheMayacalendar.

ThefirstisthatthedataisnotatallclearwhatalignmentmighthaveintriguedtheMaya. Secondly,theirrepresentationofthephysicalworldwasfardifferentfromthemapsandcharts ofthetwentiethcenturyfolksanalyzingthe2012event,andsogettingintothemindofthe Mayaonthisverybasiclevelisfraughtwithdifficulty.Lastly,thereisnocredibleevidencefrom thepreColumbianpastthattheMayaactuallyconsideredtheMilkyWayasacriticalfeaturelet aloneimbueitwiththepowermodernfolkshavereadintoit.Thefourthchaptergoesinto evengreaterdetailindescribingtheinnerworkingsoftheMayacalendar,andthedivisionof timeintodays,years,andlargergroupsofdays.
