Its Origin and Being

The Jamiatu Muslim Mindanao (JMM) an institution of higher learning was established out of the physical and financial resources of the Agama Islam Society. The Society was founded in 1956 by late Sheikh Ahmad Basher and his devoted companions (Board of Directors) from the Ulama (Ustadj) and Traditional (Cali) Group; he serves as a founding President. They started their simple Madrasah education with seven classrooms at the residence of former Lanao del Sur Provincial Governor Abdulgaffor Madki Alonto in Lolong, Dansalan. The Madrasah was initially named as Madrasatul Arabiya, offering primary and elementary grades with 8 teachers (Ustdaj/Ustadja) and 150 pioneering students (morit), who are now the famous Ulamas in the Philippines. From then on they started organizing many Arabic schools (Madaris) in Mindanao. In 1961, an agreement was signed by Sheikh Ahmad Basher and Sheikh Abdurrahman Pacasum, owner of the land situated at Pacasum Street, Lumbac a Madaya, Marawi City, that such land can be used by the Madrasah for a period of 30 years without monetary consideration. During this year a secondary school was established named as Mahad Mindanao Al-Arabie Al-Islamie. In 1962, the Agama Islam Academy located at Ganassi, Lanao del Sur was also established offering complete levels of English education. The school had operated until 1987. In 1972, the Mahad Mindanao Al-Arabie Al-Islamie was transferred to Darussalam, Matampay, Marawi City, through the benevolent assistance of late Sheikh Esmail Laut Sarip and former Lanao del Sur Governor, Sultan sa Masiu, Hon. Mohammad Ali Dimaporo for the exclusion of this land from military reservation pursuant to Proclamation No. 2223 signed by the President of the Republic of the Philippines, His Excellency Ferdinand E. Marcos; a certain portion of this land was donated to the Agama Islam Society by the late Sultan Tiboron Maruhom, Sultan of Guimba through the benevolent assistance of former City Mayor, late Sultan Omar M. Dianalan and Hadji Mohammad Camote Maruhom. For many years, it has remained as a Madrasah catering to the religious and educational needs of the Muslim Filipinos and the Bangsamoro people in the Philippines, particularly in the City of Marawi and the Province of Lanao del Sur. In 1987, Mahad Mindanao Al-Arabie Al-Islamia was changed by the Board of Directors and adopted JAMIATU MUSLIM MINDANAO. At present, it is one of the few Arabic schools (Madaris) in the country offering the complete levels of Islamic education Kindergarten, Complete Elementary, Complete Secondary and Collegiate Courses. In summer 1987, through Board Resolution No. 1-87, series 1987 and the untiring efforts of Dr. Mohammad Hassoubah, a visiting Professor from Republic

of Egypt to the Mindanao State University, Hon. Salipada Saud Tamano, former DepEd ARMM Regional Secretary, Dr. Mario Rodriguez, Prof, Marlene H. Tamano, and Prof, Salic L. Mangco; the English Department was organized with JAMIATU MUSLIM MINDANAO as its official name and sought government recognition in accordance with the provisions of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports (MECS) Order No. 24, series of 1985, otherwise known as Guidelines and Standards for the Recognition and Operation of Madaris". Its education programs are aimed at implementing the kind of education recommended by the First World Conference on Muslim Education, held in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1977 which is concerned with the teaching of spiritual and material aspects needed by Muslim Filipinos living in a modern Philippine society. Courses offered follow government approved curriculum but enriched with Islamic and Arabic overtones. The Jamiatu Muslim Mindanao is an active member of the League of Islamic Universities based in Cairo, Egypt. It was even voted as a member of the Executive Council in its General Assembly Meeting held in Amman, Jordan in 1999. Jamiatu Muslim Mindanao looks back with a sense of gratification for having graduated several hundreds of young men and women not few of them proving to be good leaders in their own profession both in business, politics and government, and community affairs. Over the years, the Jamiatu Muslim Mindanao, after overcoming many challenges and operational problems has continued to exist as the living bastion of Islamic and Arabic studies and remained as a non-profit, non-stock educational institution of higher learning with 132 branches (Madaris) throughout the Philippines predominantly in Mindanao. It is the infinite blessings of the God Almighty, that serve as the prime mover and principal patron in the steady growth of the school from a simple Mahad in the 1950s to a full grown institution of higher learning both in Arabic and English as it is today with a thousand population (pupils and students) for its main campus in Marawi City. The Jamiatu Muslim Mindanao is now the premier institution of Madrasah Education not only in Mindanao but also throughout the Philippines.
