Important
Overheatng
Overheatng wll serously damage the CPU and system. Always make sure the coolng
fan can work properly to protect the CPU from overheatng. Make sure that you apply
an even layer of thermal paste (or thermal tape) between the CPU and the heatsnk to
enhance heat dsspaton.
Replacng the CPU
Whle replacng the CPU, always turn of the ATX power supply or unplug the power
supplys power cord from the grounded outlet frst to ensure the safety of CPU.
Overclockng
Ths manboard s desgned to support overclockng. However, please make sure your
components are able to tolerate such abnormal settng, whle dong overclockng. Any
attempt to operate beyond product specfcatons s not recommended. We do not guar-

cause the damage of your CPU & manboard.
Open the load level. 1. Lft the load lever up to fully open
poston
2.
The CPU socket has a plastc cap on

Please refer to the followng llustratons for memory populaton rules.
Dual-Channel mode Populaton Rule
In Dual-Channel mode, the memory modules can transmt and receve data wth two

Important
DDR3 memory modules are not nterchangeable wth DDR2 and the DDR3 standard
s not backwards compatble. You should always nstall DDR3 memory modules n
the DDR3 DIMM slots.
In Dual-Channel mode, make sure that you nstall memory modules of the same type
and densty n dferent channel DIMM slots.
To enable successful system boot-up (Lynnfeld CPU especally), always nsert the
memory modules nto the DIMM1 frst.
Due to the chpset resource deployment, the system densty wll only be detected up
to 15+GB (not full 16GB) when each DIMM s nstalled wth a 4GB memory module.

Spread Spectrum
When the manboards clock generator pulses, the extreme values (spkes) of the pulses
create EMI (Electromagnetc Interference). The Spread Spectrum functon reduces the
EMI generated by modulatng the pulses so that the spkes of the pulses are reduced
to fatter curves.
Important
If you do not have any EMI problem, leave the settng at [Dsabled] for optmal system

Spectrum for EMI reducton.

The manboard comes wth the Intel RAID controller that allows you to confgure SATA

SATA hard drves delver blsterng transfer speeds up to 3 Gb/s. Seral ATA uses long,
thn cables, makng t easer to connect your drve and mprovng the arfow nsde your

Supports 3 Gb/s transfers wth CRC error checkng.
Supports Hot-plug-n-play feature.

rors) , Intel

Rapd Recover Technology.
RAID 0 breaks the data nto blocks whch are wrtten to separate hard drves. Spread-
ng the hard drve I/O load across ndependent channels greatly mproves I/O perfor-
mance.
RAID 1 provdes data redundancy by mrrorng data between the hard drves and pro-
vdes enhanced read performance.
RAID 5 Provdes data strpng at the byte level and also strpe error correcton nforma-
ton. Ths results n excellent performance and good fault tolerance. Level 5 s one of the
most popular mplementatons of RAID.
RAID 10 Not one of the orgnal RAID levels, multple RAID 1 mrrors are created, and a
RAID 0 strpe s created over these.
Intel

Matrx RAID Technology s the advanced ablty for two RAID volumes to share the
combned space of two hard drves beng used n unson.
Intel

Rapd Recover Technology utlzes RAID 1 functonalty to copy data from a des-
gnated Master drve to a desgnated Recovery drve. The sze of the Master drve must
be less than or equal to the sze of the Recovery drve. When a Recovery volume s
created, complete capacty of the Master drve wll be used as the Master volume. Only
one Recovery Volume can exst on a system. There are 2 methods of updatng the
data on the Master to the Recovery drve. They are Contnuous Update Polcy and On

BIOS must be confgured for RAID before nstallng Wndows on the sngle SATA

(1) Confgure Volume
Here you can confgure the new RAID volume by enterng the volume name, selectng
the RAID level and strp sze.
RAID Volume Name:
A desred RAID volume name needs to be typed n where the Volume_0000 text
currently appears above. The RAID volume name has a maxmum lmt of 16 char-
acters. The RAID volume name must also be n Englsh alphanumerc ASCII char-
acters.
RAID Level:
Select the desred RAID level:
RAID 0 (Performance) :
A volume optmzed for performance wll allow you to access your data more quck-
ly.
RAID 1 (Redundancy) :
A volume optmzed for data redundancy wll provde you wth a realtme duplcate
copy of your data. Note: Only half of the avalable volume space wll be avalable for
data storage.
RAID 5 (Useful) :
RAID 5 can be used on three or more dsks, wth zero or more spare-dsks. The
resultng RAID-5 devce sze wll be (N-1)*S, where N s the how many drve, S s the
sze of the smallest drve n the array. If one of the dsks fal, all data are stll ntact.
It can rebuld the dsk from the party nformaton. If spare dsks are avalable, recon-
structon wll begn mmedately after the devce falure. If two dsks fal smultane-
ously, all data are lost. RAID-5 can survve one dsk falure, but not two or more. Both
read and wrte performance usually ncrease, but can be hard to predct how much.
Reads are smlar to RAID-0 reads, wrtes can be ether rather expensve (requrng
read-n pror to wrte, n order to be able to calculate the correct party nformaton),
or smlar to RAID-1 wrtes. The wrte efcency depends heavly on the amount of
memory n the machne, and the usage pattern of the array. Heavly scattered wrtes

Intel SATA RAID MS-7583

C-19
Intel SATA RAID MS-7583
are bound to be more expensve.
RAID 10 (Mrrored Strpes) :
A RAID 1 array of two RAID 0 arrays.
Strp Szes:
Select the desred strp sze settng. As ndcated, the optmal settng s 128KB. Se-
lectng any other opton may result n performance degradaton. Even though 128KB
s the recommended settng for most users, you should choose the strp sze value
whch s best suted to your specfc RAID usage model. The most typcal strp sze
settngs are:
4KB: For specalzed usage models requrng 4KB strps
8KB: For specalzed usage models requrng 8KB strps
16KB: Best for sequental transfers
32KB: Good for sequental transfers
64KB: Good general purpose strp sze
128KB: Best performance for most desktops and workstatons
(2) Select the source dsk

It s very mportant to note whch dsk s the source dsk (the one contanng all of the
nformaton to be mgrated) and whch one s the target dsk. On a RAID Ready system,
ths can be determned by makng a note durng POST of whch port the sngle dsk s

use 100% of the avalable space for the optmzed usage. For RAID 0 volume, f you do
not specfy 100% of the hard drve space, the rest hard drve space wll be worked as
RAID 1 volume, whch s the new technology called Intel Matrx RAID. Then clck Next
to contnue.
(5) Start Creatng RAID Volume from Exstng Hard Drve Wzard
Before you contnue the procedure of RAID volume creaton from exstng hard drve,
read the dalogue box below carefully. Please note that once you clck Fnsh, the
exstng data on the selected hard drve(s) wll be deleted permanently and ths opera-

the dsks beng used and the strp sze selected. A dalogue wndow wll appear stat-
ng that the mgraton process may take consderable tme to complete, meanwhle a
popup dalogue at the taskbar wll also show the mgraton status. Whle you can stll
contnue usng your computer durng the mgraton process, once the mgraton process

s rebooted for any reason, t wll pck up the mgraton process where t left of. You wll
be provded wth an estmated completon tme (the remanng tme wll depend on your
