FRUIT

Alongside Babylon's rivers we sat on the banks; we cried and cried, remembering the good old days in Zion. Alongside the quaking aspens we stacked our unplayed harps; That's where our captors demanded songs, sarcas c and mocking: "Sing us a happy Zion song!" Oh, how could we ever sing GOD's song in this wasteland? Psalm 137:1-4 (The Message)

Strange Fruit
by Abel Meeropol Southern trees bear a strange fruit, Blood on the leaves and blood at the root, Black body swinging in the Southern breeze, Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees. Pastoral scene of the gallant South, The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth, Scent of magnolia sweet and fresh, And the sudden smell of burning esh! Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck, For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck, For the sun to rot, for a tree to drop, Here is a strange and bi er crop.

Fasting for the Lenten Season - 2012

We are calling for a period of prayer and fas ng for the en re church during the Season of Lent, Ash Wednesday, February 22nd through Resurrec on Sunday April 8, 2012. Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil and a er fas ng forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread. Ma hew 4:1-3 Fas ng has been used throughout the ages to prepare the people of God for the great things God has in store for them. As we pray through this season of transi on and Divine imagina on, I am calling, I am asking, I am reques ng the en re church become involved in some form of prayer and fas ng. The following are several types of fasts that can be used to develop spiritual power and clarity. FASTING FOR THE LENTEN SEASON Fast #1 - Fas ng to confront destruc ve forces February 22-February 28 Eat all your meals before 6pm February 29 March 6 Eat only 2 meals before 6pm March 7 - March 13 Eat only 1 meals a day March 14 March 20 Drink only juices, water and or tea March 21 March 27 Eat only fruits and vegetables before 6:00 p.m. March 28 April 8 Slowly begin to add meat to your diet Fast #2 The Daniel Fast. February 22-February 28 All meals before 6pm February 29 March 6 Eat only two meals a day before 6pm March 7 - March 13 Eat only fruits & vegetables before 6pm March 14 March 20 Eat one meal a day before 6:00 p.m., meat may be added. A Word From the Pastor

Beloved,
Below is an email from Eric Schlosser, the author of Fast Food Na on, and Gary Hirshberg, chairman of Stonyeld Farm. They created a pe on on SignOn.org that is ge ng a lot of a en on. I encourage you to read and visit the website to sign the pe on. The FDA is on the brink of approving gene cally engineered salmon for human consump on. This would be the rst gene cally engineered animal on supermarket shelves in the United States. The salmon is engineered to produce growth hormones year-round that cause the sh to grow at twice the normal rate. The government already requires labels to tell us if sh is wild-caught or farm-raised don't we also have a right to know if our salmon is gene cally engineered? Without labels, we'll never know. More than forty countries, including Russia and China, already require labels on gene cally engineered foods. As Americans, we rmly believe that we deserve the same right to know what we are ea ng. That's why I created a pe on to U.S. Food and Drug Administra on (FDA) on SignOn.org, which says:

Commissioner Hamburg, we urge the FDA to require the mandatory labeling of gene cally engineered foods. We have a right to know about the food we eat and what we feed our families, but under current FDA regula ons, we don't have that ability when it comes to gene cally engineered foods. Polls show that more than 90% of Americans support mandatory labeling. Such near-unanimity in public opinion is rare. Please listen to the American public and mandate labeling of gene cally engineered foods. Will you sign the pe on? Visit h p://www.moveon.org/r?r=271198&id=35802-12045599-EtaVAGx&t=2 to add your name and then pass it along to your friends. Eric Schlosser and Gary Hirshberg Asking you to Imagine

ut of New Orleans come many rich African American tradi ons, o en traced back to our ancestors rst arrival on the islands of the Caribbean and some even from Mother Africa herself. Our worship services today include some of these tradi ons, such as: Mutual Aid Group/Society An organiza on formed to provide mutual aid, benet or insurance for relief from catastrophes. Typical characteris cs include members having an equal voice and poten ally equivalent benets, providing aid to those in need, and having a collec on fund. During the 18th and 19th centuries, these socie es were essen al in providing social assistance for sickness, funerals, unemployment, and improving social condi ons. New Orleans Social Club Origina ng in 1872, when New Orleans ocials greeted Grand Duke

Romano during an ocial visit, but lacked any form of nobility of their own. They formed the Krewe of Rex and named a de facto king for the day. This rst club, heavily dominated by New Orleans ci zens of French descent excluded Blacks; so, in 1909, the Creole and Black New Orleans na ves formed their own club, led by a mutual aid group, known as The Tramps, and adorned William Storey with a n can crown and banana stalk scepter, naming him King Zulu. Over me the Zulus pres ge grew to such an extent that the Krewe named Louis Armstrong as its kin in 1949. Second Line In a tradi onal New Orleans parade, the band and the actual Club with the parade permit are considered the main line. Those that immediately follow the main line are considered the Second Line, and the dance they perform is called second lining.

Second Lining is believed to have its origins in tradi onal West African circle dances, where children formed a circle outside of the main circle of adult dancers. It was brought by slaves to New Orleans and is incorporated into processions (e.g. funerals). Dirge A somber song, typically expressing mourning or grief, appropriate for a funeral. During a New Orleans funeral with music, as the funeral procession advances, the band will play various dirges or hymns. Eventually, either when the body is entombed or buried, or when the hearse leaves the procession, the music becomes more upbeat and raucous as family and friends switch from grief to celebra ng the life of the deceased with dancing.

Excerpt from Slavery by Another Name

by Douglas A. Blackmon n March 30, 1908, Green Co enham was arrested by the sheri of Shelby County, Alabama, and charged with vagrancy. Co enham had commi ed no true crime. Vagrancy, the oense of a person not being able to prove at a given moment that he or she is employed, was a new and imsy concoc on dredged up from legal obscurity at the end of the nineteenth century by the state legislatures of Alabama and other southern states. It was capriciously enforced by local sheris and constables, adjudicated by mayors and notaries public, recorded haphazardly or not at all in court records, and, most tellingly in a me of massive unemployment among all southern men, was reserved almost exclusively for black men. Co enhams oense was blackness. A er three days behind bars, twenty-two-year-old Co enham was found guilty in a swi appearance before the county judge and immediately sentenced to a thirty-day term of hard labor. Unable to pay the array of fees assessed on every prisonerfees to the sheri, the deputy, the court clerk, the witnessesCo enhams sentence was extended to nearly a year of hard labor. The next day, Co enham, the youngest of nine children born to former slaves in an adjoining county, was sold. Under a standing arrangement between the county and a vast subsidiary of the industrial tan of the NorthU.S. Steel Corpora onthe sheri turned the young man over to the company for the dura on of his sentence. In return, the subsidiary, Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Company, gave the county $12 a month to pay o Co enhams ne and fees. What the companys managers did with Co enham, and thousands of other black men they purchased from sheris across Alabama, was en rely up to them . . . Imprisoned in what was then the most advanced city of the South, guarded by whipping bosses employed by the most iconic example of the modern corpora on emerging in the gilded North, they were slaves in all but name.
