2. Operation 2.3 operation of seal system 1.

General The seal oil system must be placed in operation prior to admitting hydrogen to the generator or placing the generator on turning gear. Seal oil pressure must be maintained at the seals whenever hydrogen is in the generator and when the shaft is turning. The seal oil pressure is normally maintained at 0.6 kg/cm2g above the hydrogen pressure. Under normal operation, oil to seals is supplied by one of the AC motor driven seal oil pumps. Seal oil pressure at the seals is adjusted by differential pressure regulator, which maintain the proper the proper differential pressure (0.6 kg/cm2g) between seal oil and hydrogen pressure. The seal temperature is controlled between 45C to 52C by adjusting the water flow to the seal oil cooler. Pressure gauges at the seal oil supply unit allow the the operator to verify proper seal oil pressure is being maintained. If the AC motor driven seal oil pumps are not able to maintain the necessary seal oil pressure, a DC motor driven emergency seal oil pump will automatically start when the differential pressure drops to 0.35 kg/cm2g. The emergency pump will maintain seal oil pressure and control seal oil/hydrogen differential pressure at 0.85 k/cm2g. A minimum differential pressure of 0.2 kg/cm2g between seal oil pressure and machine pressure is required to maintain a hydrogen seal.

Oil leaving the gland seal ring separates into two , air side and hydrogen side. The air side seal oil drains to the generator bearing drain loop seal tank, and the hydrogen side seal oil drains to the drain regulator. The vacuum in the vacuum tank is maintained about -1 kg/cm2g by the vacuum pump. The vacuum tank and vacuum pump helps o extract the gases and moisture dissolved in the seal oil and allows the generator to operate at high hydrogen purity. The vapor extractor should be operated continuously when the generator is filled with hydrogen since the vapor extractor ventilates the bearing brackets. A vacuum of -25 to -50 mmAq is maintained on the loop seal tank. 2. Operation of the seal oil system A. Pre-Operational instructions A1. Prerequisites A. Electrical distribution system is in service

B. Turbine lubricating oil system is in service. C. Cooling water system is in service.

A2. Precautions A. The seal oil must be completely free of dirt to prevent damage to the seals and the generator rotor. B. Check regularly for seal oil leaks. Oil leaks can result in a fire if the leak is located near hot equipment. C. The vapor extractor should be operated continuously when the generator is filled with hydrogen.

A3. Pre-Start Checklist A. All equipment is in a safe condition to operate and is ready for operation. B. All instrumentation is available. C. All annunciators for the system are available. D. Valve lineup is completed per the Turbine Generator Seal Oil Diagram 1216-00-M51XBW-001-01 (AK91266).

B. System Start-up and shutdown instructions

B1. Place the Seal Oil System In service

Note ; with the turbine lube oil system in service, oil will be admitted to the loop seal tank from the generator bearing drains. In addition, if the seal oil supply back-up valve (**MKW01AA031) is open, low pressure bearing oil will be supplied to the seal oil unit. This will fill the system with oil if the system has been drained. 1) Verify that the bearing oil pump and vapor extractor is running and the vacuum tank oil level is at normal level.

2) Open the vacuum break valve (**MKW01AA918). Other valves condition (open/close) shall be same as the drawing turbine generator seal oil diagram 1216-00-M-51XBW-001-01 (AK91266). Note : Needle valves for the differential pressure regulators (**MKW01AA846, **MKW01AA849) shall be adjusted to 1 or 2 turns open from full-close position in order to prevent pulsation of the differential pressure regulators.

3) Close the vacuum break valve (**MKW01AA918). 4) Close the inlet valve of the vacuum pump (**MKW01AA026). 5) Start the vacuum pump and gradually open the inlet valve of the vacuum pump (**MKW01AA026). Note: the vacuum pressure will be reach at almost -1 kg/cm2g. During the vacuum process, foams are generated in the vacuum tank. However, it is not problem, because that means the gas extraction from seal oil.

6) Loosen the spring of relief valves (**MKW01AA011 and **MKW01AA017) for AC and DC seal oil pumps for prevention damages due the mis-setting of the valves. 7) Loosen the spring of differential pressure regulators (**MKW01AA702, **MKW01AA703) and primary pressure regulator (**MKW01AA701), so that the seal oil pressure may not be increased at high value. This procedure can be skipped if setting of the regulator valves is completed. 8) start one of the AC motor driven seal oil pumps. The emergency DC seal oil pump shall be at STOP (LOCKED) status at this time. Note : Abnormal sound may be produced from the seal oil pump when the AC pump is started because of cavitation. The AC seal oil pump should be operated after the dissolved gas into the oil is exhausted and the foams in the vacuum tank are not getting observed. If the cavitation noise or pulsation of the pressure indication continue, check should be performed for inhalation of the air into the vacuum line.

9) Adjust the relief valve (**MKW01AA011) for AC seal oil pump as follows.

1. close the inlet valve of differential pressure regulator (**MKW01AA013) gradually and fully with confirming the pressure (**MKW01CP301) does not increase abnormally. 2. tighten up the spring of primary pressure regulator (**MKW01AA701) gradually up to the pressure gauge (**MKW01CP301) indicates 11.5 kg/cm2g 3. tighten up the spring of relief valve (**MKW01AA011) for AC seal oil pump so that the relief valve works at 11.5 kg/cm2g.

10) loosen the spring of primary pressure regulator (**MKW01AA701) gradually so that the pressure gauge (**MKW01CP301) indicates 9.5 kg/cm2g.

11) open the inlet valve of differential pressure regulator (**MKW01AA013) and then tighten up the spring of differential pressure regulator so that the pressure gauges at seals (**MKA01CP301 & **MKA01CP302) indicate 0.6 kg/cm2g.

Note : Required seal oil quantity tends to increase when the generator is running. Therefore, the differential pressure regulator shall be adjusted so that seal oil pressure at seals is 0.7 kg/cm2g higher than gas pressure when adjusting is done with low temperature seal oil.

12) loosen the plug for upper bellows of differential pressure regulator to vent any air in the bellows. After that, plug shall be set again. Caution : at this time, seal oil pressure may be increased.
