AMADEUS MOZART

SUBMITTED BY: Angelo Theodore Philippe R. Bernardo

Amadeus Mozart was born on January 27, 1756 at Salzburg, Austria. His full name is Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Gottlieb Mozart but was baptized as Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart. He is the son of Anna Maria Pertl and Leopold Mozart. He was married on August 4, 1782 to Constanze and had 6 children, but only two of them survived infancy. The genre of music that Mozart composed was diverse and it includes chamber music, opera, piano sonata, piano concerto, mass dance and divertimento. Mozart composed over 600 works which includes 21 stage and opera works, 15 masses, 50 symphonies, 25 piano concertos, 12 violin concertos, 27 concert arias, 17 piano sonatas and 26 string quartets. His early works are: La finta semplice (1768), Bastien und Batienne (1768) and Mitridate, re di Ponto (1770). 0n 1779, he made Missa in C, Coronation Mass. His late works include: Idomeneo, re di Creta (1781), The Abduction from Seraglio (1782), Mass in C minor (1783), The Marriage of Figaro (1786), Don Giovanni (1787), Cosi fan tutte (1790), La Clemenza di Tito (1791), The Magic Flute (1791) and Requiem (1791). He made several litanies and vespers, short sacred works and church sonatas. Among his most famous works are Eine kleine Nachtmusik (A Little Night Music, 1787) and the operas Don Giovanni (1787) and Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute, 1791). Mozart had a great contribution to the Classical period in musical history (1750-1810). This is the period in which most of the parameters which govern music today were fully

established. Among the three influential composers ever to have lived was Amadeus Mozart aside from Beethoven and Haydn. In his mid-thirties, he went through a period of great music productivity but it was also during this time that his mental and physical health deteriorated. When he was in Prague for the premier of the operas La Clemenza di Tito, which he was commissioned to produce for the coronation of Leopold II as King of Bohemia, although he was able to recover briefly for the premier of The Magic Flute, he fell deeper into sickness by November and was confined to bed. In spite of his sickness, he was still preoccupied with finishing Requiem. He died at the age of 35 on December 5, 1971. There was uncertainty on the cause of his death. Officially though, the record lists the cause as severe military fever which was a skin rash that looks like millet seeds. Many believed though that he died of acute rheumatic fever which was a disease he had and suffered from repeatedly throughout his life. He was buried in a common grave but his memorial services were well attended. After his death, his unpublished manuscripts were sold to pay off the familys large debts. At the time of his death, he was considered one of the greatest composers of all time. His music presented a bold expression, often times complex and dissonant, and required high technical mastery from the musicians who performed it. His works are still popular up to the present time.
