Keep Kokanee Creek Open
West Kootenay EcoSociety will open the doors of the Ko-
kanee Creek Visitors Centre again this summer thanks to
a $15,000 grant from the Columbia Basin Trusts Environ-
mental Initiatives Program.
We are very pleased to be running the Centre for 2012,
says EcoSociety Executive Director David Reid. Weve got
lots of programs planned and the CBT has provided the
backbone funding.
In 2011 EcoSociety partnered with BC Parks to operate
the centre, with the support of the Friends of West Koote-
nay Parks. BC Parks made repairs, upgraded the foors and
installed a cofee bar.
Tanks to grants from the CBT, the Conservation Branch,
Area E and Area F, more than 10,000 campers and residents
visited the centre for programs, presentations and flms last
summer.
Weve made some amazing upgrades to the educational
material and the centre is looking great, said Reid. We
want to continue the successful programs like Jerrys Ran-
gers and Art in the Park for kids and evening presentations
for campers and residents.
New this year will be the frst annual RedFish Festival on
Sunday, August 26. Te kokanee are the heart of the park,
says Reid. We see this festival as a great way to celebrate
their return and learn more about them.
Te centre will also be available for group rentals in May
and early June. Its a wonderful setting for a meeting or
seminar, says Reid.
Te centre will be open from 9 am to 9 pm beginning
July 1 and will continue to ofer the popular Science in the
Park on Tuesdays, Storytelling in the Park on Saturdays and
evening naturalist programs for the whole family.

Slocan Valley Seedy Sunday
Spring is around the corner. What will you plant in your
garden this year? Teres something for everyone at the an-
nual Slocan Valley Seed Exchange Day. Hosted by Slocan
Valley Recreation, this event will take place on Sunday,
March 4, 1 4 pm at the Slocan Park Hall. Whether youve
got a list of varieties that youre looking for, or youre look-
ing for inspiration and a taste of the season ahead, youre
sure to enjoy this community event.
Expect an array of organic and untreated heirloom seed
varieties, root stock and cuttings which have a history of
success in this area. As a long standing tradition in this
area, vendors tend to come from throughout the region.
Additional information about gardening, issues of food
security and small-scale food production will also be avail-
able and welcome.
Everyone is welcome to buy, sell, trade or share. Individ-
uals and organizations requiring a table are encouraged to
contact Slocan Valley Recreation as soon as possible to re-
serve space.
Admission is by donation with a portion of the proceeds
going to the Slocan Valley River Farmers Group. For more

Circle of Habondia Needs You
Tis is an invitation to members, investors, loans recipients
and past board members, to join the present board members
on a strategic planning and capacity building workshop be-
ing hosted by the Kootenay Cooperative Services Society of
Nelson. Te workshop will be broken into two half days of
three hours each on Tursday, March 1 and Tursday, March
8. Location and exact times to be announced by February 24.
Te outcomes of this meeting will determine the future of
Te Circle of Habondia Lending Society.Here are a few points:

goes away, we are ofen unable to function
We have not had the capacity to ofer the loans pro-
gram for the past three years
Te present members on the board have worked for
the past three years on the WISH project and would

Passing Trough Missing Pages: Te Intriguing Story of Annie
Garland Foster by Frances Welwood is now available at your
local bookstores.
Frances Welwood has produced a beautifully writ-
ten yet scholarly work. Shining through is the captivat-
ing portrait of a truly remarkable woman. Annie Garland
Foster was an important fgure in the history of Nelson.
Her fascinating life included work as a nurse, a teacher,
and a writer. She traveled across Canada frequently, and
was a Red Cross nurse in British military hospitals dur-
ing World War I. Annie became a social activist, and was
the frst woman elected to Nelson city council. She even
took up ranching in the Pend dOreille. She wrote about the
Doukhobors, Canadian holidays and poet Pauline Johnson.
As if these accomplishments were not enough to fll any life,
Passing Trough Missing Pages also uncovers the special role
Annie played in one of the Kootenays most notorious murder
trials, making this not just an excellent history but a memor-
able mystery page turner.

Kootenay Co-op Finds A New Home
Afer many years of looking for a new home for the
Kootenay Co-op, the search is fnally over! Te Co-op has
entered into a contract to purchase the property at 708
Vernon Street (currently Extra Foods) in Nelson.
Initially the Co-op was negotiating to lease the property,
but purchasing became a much more desirable long-term
situation for the Co-op. Tey will take possession on June
1, 2012 and will spend the next several months working
through the options of how to best develop their new prop-
erty. Te store has been bursting at the seams for many
years, and this new location will be more spacious and fa-
cilitate the expansion of lots of new products and services.
We appreciate that this is an incredible opportunity for
our Co-op, the City of Nelson and our entire region, said
Deirdrie Lang, the Co-ops general manager. We are com-
mitted to ensuring that we make the best decisions for our
member-owners and the larger community and will keep our
membership informed as we move through this process.

New Opera Premieres
West Kootenay music lovers will have a rare treat next
month the world premiere performances at Nelsons
Capitol Teatre of the regions very own, newly commis-
sioned opera. In 2009 Nelsons Amy Ferguson Institute
commissioned local composer, Don Macdonald, and lo-
cal playwright, Nicola Harwood to create this new opera
they have entitled KHAOS. Featuring seven soloists, a
chorus of 20 singers, a 16 member orchestra and solo
dancer, the opera is currently in rehearsal and the curtain
will rise on the new work for the frst time on March 8,
with three subsequent Nelson performances on March 9
and 10. Te production will then tour to Cranbrooks Key
City Teatre on March 17 and Trails Charles Bailey Te-
atre on May 12. KHAOS will also be performed in Grand
Forks and Creston on May 11 and 13.

Nelson Transit Community Group
Tis group was started in June of 2011 in response to
several proposed cuts to the Nelson Transit service, in-
cluding reducing the number of bus stops, cancelling the
Perrier Road service, canceling service to the mall and
cancelling Sunday service in the city. At the same time the
special Waldorf School bus service was also cancelled.
Tese changes were proposed by a transit review com-
pleted by BC Transit in June 2011. Strangely enough this
review included only a two day survey of the number of
transit users and did not include a stop by stop survey of
number of users getting on and of, which the survey itself
indicated should be completed. Te survey also suggested
possible changes to the city system should wait until a
regional bus service review was completed. Tis has still
not been brought forward, but as the public knows, sev-
eral of the changes noted above have been implemented.
Te Transit Community Group has received support from
over 800 citizens on a petition and has organized some pub-
lic protest marches etc. over the months as well as making
several presentations at City Council Meetings of the Whole.
Te latest presentation asked the city to hold public meet-
ings so that citizens could have input into this important
public service. Te council indicated this was not possible
at this time but would see that, before any further changes
were made, those meetings would be considered. Tey also
provided transit information documents and fnancial infor-
mation on city transit.
Since then our group has had a number of weekly meet-
ings to study these documents and have come up with sev-
eral thoughts on the future of transit in Nelson.
We have looked at routes, as proposed by BC Transit,
and while they are certainly direct, they dont appear to
be very timely and most of the citizens would have a good
number of blocks to walk in order to reach a bus stop.
We have made some adjustments to the routes, using BC
Transits proposals and also by looking very closely at the
citys maps showing the grades of various city blocks. We
have also driven each of these routes with the assistance
of someone who knows the capabilities of our current
buses and have found that each changed route can be eas-
ily covered in the twenty minute time line that BC Tran-
sit is proposing over the long term for the system. Tese
new routes provide maximum three blocks to bus stops
for 85/90% of the city and with fve blocks for
about another 8% of the city.
Tis group has come up with other sugges-
tions to improve the overall system over time
and will be presenting them to council in the
near future. Watch for more details over the
next few weeks and watch for advertising of
public meetings on this issue to be announced
soon.
Tis group has also looked seriously at the
fnances of the transit system and determined
one of the better ways to make this current
system more ef cient and efective is to work
diligently on increasing ridership. Just like any
other public service, it can only be sustainable
if everyone participates. So come on Nelson,
