LETTER FROM EDITOR

Dear Readers,
The United Arab Emirates is the undoubted leader in terms of offering the most technologicallyadvanced satellite systems in the Middle East. Dubai alone has more than 300 companies engaged in the installation of satellite systems, and around 150 companies involved in direct selling of satellite products. As a result, Dubai offers a wide range of products and services geared to provide excellent television reception. For African customers this translates into the convenience of finding a comprehensive range of products at competitive prices. Dubai has become a major of supplier of dish antennas, LNBs, satellite receivers and other related equipment for East Africa. Satellite television is still a relatively new concept in the East African region and there is a great demand for quality satellite systems which is being sourced from Dubai. As more and more countries in Africa join the bandwagon of satellite television, the demand for satellite receiving equipment is bound to grow in the future. Prices of dish antennas and LNBs in countries like Uganda, Congo, Rwanda and Tanzania are almost double of what they are in Dubai. As a result, a large number of African traders are buying these goods from Dubai in large quantities and selling them in their countries at a high premium. The satellite market in Dubai - a beehive of activity because of its re-export business - has been registering an increase in the number of visitors from Africa.

SES PROVIDES CAPACITY FOR NEW AFRICAN PAY-TV SERVICE

SES New Skies has inked a multitransponder deal with Pathfinder Communications, which is launching 45channel pay TV service in Nigeria. The service will be branded Infinity TV and initially reaches consumers in Nigeria. Pathfinder CEO, Tony Ikekwu, said that the plan is to extend the DTH service into Ghana and beyond West Africa. The channel line-up spans sports, lifestyle, news and kids offerings. Channels include BBC World, E! and Fox News alongside several in-house offerings such as Infinity Sports.

in pay-TV and it can survive in the Middle East if it's done right.

AL JAZEERA SPORT SELECTS IRDETO

Irdeto, expert in content and business model protection solutions and services, has signed an expanded relationship with Al Jazeera Sport, part of the Al Jazeera Network and a leading provider of sports TV services in the Middle East and North Africa. Irdeto will now protect Al Jazeera Sport's premium content across its entire digital TV network and as part of the agreement, will source more than 500,000 Irdeto Smart Cards. The expanded agreement between Al Jazeera Sport and Irdeto aligns with an aggressive, industry-wide drive in the Gulf to protect content and curb prolific sales of illegal TV set-top boxes that decrypt pay-TV channels.

The demand for high definition TV services will drive the growth of pay-TV in the Middle East, according to Mohamed Youssif, the CEO of YahLive, the partnership between satellite operator SES Astra and Yahsat to offer Direct-to-Home (DTH) television capacity and services to more than two dozen countries in the Middle East, North Africa and South West Asia. Under the YahLive brand, the company will own and commercialise 23 BSS-transponders on the Yahsat 1A spacecraft to be positioned at the 52.5 degrees East orbital position and operating in the Ku-band frequency. Youssif said that the free-to-air culture in the Middle East meant that pay-TV had not performed well in the region, but that with spectacular growth in HD channel availability forecast up to 2012, YahLive would activate the market of some 9 million HD-ready TV sets looking for content. "We will target HD, pay-TV, interactive and video-on demand, working with new content providers and leveraging our parent and sister company capabilities," Youssif said. "There will still be demand on capacity that doesn't exist today. I'm a firm believer

he Middle East is one of the most dynamic markets for satellite communications anywhere in the world. Blossoming pay-TV markets, strong demand for business applications and military satellite capacity, means everywhere you look, there are interesting and vibrant markets for satellite players to target. Satellite orders expected from existing and start-up operators in the Middle East in 2007, coupled with the decision by the Turkish government to develop its own satellite manufacturing capacity, are the latest signs of continued growth in a region where demand for satellite telecommunication services continues to grow. The start-up company Al Yahsat Communications Co., owned by the government of Abu Dhabi, order one midsize telecommunications satellite in 2007 after more than two years of indecision. Industry officials say the company has set a Dec. 31 deadline for proposals from

satellite manufacturers for one satellite and an option for another. The spacecraft will be placed into the 52.5 degrees east orbital slot. Egypt's Nilesat, whose two orbiting satellites are nearly filled to capacity, is leasing a Eutelsat direct-broadcast satellite, which Eutelsat agreed to move to 7 degrees west. Nilesat has announced, and then withdrawn, plans for a new spacecraft on several occasions in the past three years. Established fleet operator Arabsat of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, aware of the increased competition in the region, is considering bids for two, and possibly three, satellites were ordered in 2007. Badr4, the first of Arabsat's fourth-generation satellites, was launched in November into Arabsat's 26 degrees east orbital slot, and was followed in 2008 by Badr-6, which is being built by Europe's Astrium Satellites. Badr-6 also will be stationed at the 26 degrees east slot. Industry officials said it remains unclear whether Arabsat will order two satellites simultaneously, with a third on option, or limit itself to one firm order at a time. Nabil A. Shanti, director of sales at Arabsat, said Arabsat sign a contract for at least one satellite in the first three months of 2007. This satellite, which Arabsat refers to as Arabsat 5A, will replace the Arabsat 2B spacecraft that now operates at Arabsat's second orbital position, 30.5 degrees east longitude. Shanti said the two other next-generation satellites, currently known as Arabsat 5B and 5C, will be located at 26 degrees east and 20 degrees east, respectively. The 20degrees east slot is a new one for Arabsat.

The T90 Wave Frontier dishes are not to be used with a rotor. Because of the multiple LNBF this dish, it is not compatable with the rotor. There are many other antennas available on the market that offer multi satellite capabilities for a limited arc range, designed based on a parabolic formula. The limitation of these multi-beam parabolic antennas comes from its original formula. Only one LNBF, which is installed at the center, is at its optimal position. In other words, the other LNBFs are not at their optimal position. Therefore, a customer may experience rain fade and weak signal strength on the channels coming off from these not-optimally located LNBFs. On the other hand, Toroidal formula makes it possible to locate all LNBFs at their optimal position due to its dual reflector design of Toroidal antenna. Therefore, Toroidal antenna provides the same signal strength and stable signal for all LNBFs under various environments.

The built in real time clock lets you see at a glance and stay current for program changes. One of the best features is the information or info button on remote which displays a star rating, cast description, and a much better definition, in comparison to the limited videocipher text cutoff blocks. Favorite settings A and B for mulltiple users - The 4dtv digital receiver is all setup for your HDTV channels and all you need is the Hdd200 decoder which converts your existing NTSC to High Definition channels. Since the downloaded (IPG) information is done daily there is no need to reprogram satellite name changes, since this is updated automatically. The channel delay when channel surfing takes a little getting used to, since your old analog receivers are quicker, but the quality of the picture is well worth the .5 second wait. The digital picture quality is unsurpassed, and is quite superior comparing all the small dish formats. This is probably due to the fact that the digital picture bandwidth is much wider, providing an overall better picture.

Satellite Receiver Beetel the Indian company Bharti Teletech started production of telecommunications equipment in 1985 thanks to technical cooperation with Siemens. Back then, it was all about telephones, but these days the company has begun to manufacture satellite receiver as well in order to meet the increasing demand in India. We tried to find out what this receiver isall about and whether it is technically fit for the global market. At first sight the receiver looks like a DVD player, until you notice the LCD display and six buttons on the front panel. As we are talking about an FTA receiver, there is no card slot or CI slot. What we liked most about the box was its remote control. It sits very well in your hand and features a smart design for operating the receiver in an easy and efficient way. All buttons on the remote are clearly labeled. The receivers features both USALS and DiSEqC 1.2 and so we decided to connect a STAB motor to the box. The Beetel has 45 satellite positions pre-stored. For our test we first selected the correct LO frequency and then chose the NSS6 satellite at 95 East the offset antenna started to move immediately and in less than one minute the receiver had scanned all transponders, including transponders with a high symbol rate of 40700. There's hardly a way any other receiver could achieve this faster and more easily.

SkyB has added a better-than-forecast 124,000 subscribers in the past three months, hitting a total of 9.4 million, boosted by price cuts and promotion for its high-definition TV service, with new customers joining at the fastest rate for five years. Announcing a four per cent rise in annual profits for the 12 months to the end of June, chief executive Jeremy Darroch denied that BSkyB is "recession proof", warning that "looking ahead, we expect the overall consumer environment to be challenging". But he added: "We think we are well placed to build a bigger and more profitable business in the long term." The highdefinition service also helped Sky increase ARPU at a new high of 464, (E542) up 37 on last year. For the year as a whole, Sky announced pre-tax profits of 456 million, up from 60 million last year. But the results were distorted by exceptional charges, especially related to the collapse in the value of Sky's controversial stake in ITV. This year's figures include a further 191 million write own in the 17.9 per cent stake as a result of ITV's plunging share price, while last year's

results were hit by a 616 million charge. With these write owns stripped out, operating profits were 780 million, up 4 per cent on last year's 752 million. Revenues were 5.3 billion, up from 4.95 billion last year. Sky has been trying to persuade its existing customers to expand the number of its products they take to include home telephony and broadband. So far 16 per cent of Sky's 9.4 million homes take all three services. In the three months to the end of June, Sky added 118,000 broadband customers. Sky has announced that the number of customers choosing Sky+HD, the UK's only high definition service currently capable of broadcasting 3D services, has increased to 1.313 million following record growth. In the next step in the Sky+HD journey, Sky has confirmed that it will launch the UK's first 3D channel next year. The channel will offer a broad selection of the best available 3D programming, which is expected to include movies, entertainment and sport. The service will be broadcast across Sky's existing HD infrastructure and be available via the current generation of Sky+HD set-top boxes. To watch 3D, customers will also require a new '3D Ready' TV, which are expected to be on sale in the UK next year.

Gone are the days when you could watch up to a 50 channels at a time on your TV and the programming quality of media was also not of high standards.

You are probably wondering how FTA channels makes money. Most channels make money through advertising and sponsorship like the Japanese television broadcasters TV Tokyo and TV Asahi are doing. These channels rely on sponsorship and so does Philippine Television like GMA, and ABS-CBN. Free To Air (FTA) is mostly utilized in international broadcasting

SETUP YOUR SATELLITE DISH

Occassionally, the signals would break and there would be too many disturbances on your TV. With the introduction of FTA satellite TV all that is just a thing of the past. But what is FTA? FTA stands for free to air television broadcasting. It used a FTA receiver for broadcasting TV and radio signals and you can receive hundreds and even thousands of channels on your TV sitting at home. Above all, this is free of cost! FTA is delivered through satellite television and in different parts of the world FTA television channels are broadcasted using unencrypted VHF or UHF bands. In most countries where FTA is available, it is free of cost but in some places you will be charged a small fee for some of the channels or for using FTA satellite services. In some case, you will be paying a license fee like for viewing BBC and in other cases, you will end up making a voluntary contribution like for educational broadcasters like PBS.
AUGUST

and this makes it the video equivalent of shortwave radio. If you are planning to invest in FTA then you should take it from FTA authorized retailers who will provide you the list of channel guides as well as content available in your country. Different countries will have different channel content and channel guides so you need to check with the local retailer for the information. One of the important things to know about Free To Air (FTA) satellite signals is that they are available in two types: one is the Ku-Band or small dish, and the other is the C-Band or large dish. Most of the international channels that are currently available in Continental or North America are being broadcasted through the Ku-band on a Telstar-5 satellite. Of course there are other options available as well. The Kuband FTA satellite systems come with a satellite receiver, remote control and a dish, which will point towards a specific satellite.

Satellite Reception
In a relatively short time, satellites have become an essential part of global communication. In 1960, the first TV satellite, named Echo, was launched. It was basically not much more than a reflector, which reflected the TV signals it received from earth. Two years later Telstar followed, which was the first so-called active TV satellite. Instead of only reflecting the incoming signals, it also converted the signals in order to avoid interference between the incoming and outgoing signals. Telstar had a rotational speed which was different from the rotational velocity of the earth, so it had to be followed very accurately by both transmission and reception stations. In 1964, this problem was solved, when the first earth-synchronous satellite, Syncom, was launched. Many others have followed since. The most well known is probably Intelsat I, which was launched in 1965. By 1969 the satellite net had expanded to a worldwide communication and TV network. In December 1982, the Astra I satellite was launched, which generated new interest in satellites from the general public in Europe. With its coming it has become possible for people in Europe to receive TV and radio transmissions with a small dish antenna. All current

communication satellites are earthsynchronous or geo-stationary. This means they circle the earth in a specified orbit, at the same speed as the earth itself. As a result, they appear to stand still. All geostationary satellites revolve around the earth at a height of 36,000 km, precisely over the equator. Here, the centrifugal and gravitational forces of the earth are in equilibrium, ensuring that the satellites stay in their position and do not fall back to earth. Their speed is approximately 11,000 km per hour and the distance to Central Europe is approximately 41,000 km. As neither the distance nor the position over the equator changes, transmission and receiving stations can remain fixed, maintaining their aim at the satellite. The geo-stationary orbit where the satellites are in is also called the Clarke Belt, named after Arthur C. Clarke. He was a British writer and scientist who first proposed the idea of the geo-stationary orbit used by today's satellites. Non-geo-stationary satellites are used for applications such as weather observations, military surveillance and experiments. Most of them orbit the earth at a lower altitude than the geostationary satellites. Their orbital speed must therefore be faster, or else the earth's gravity would pull them down.

he number of Mobile TV users has reached 20 million globally, and will balloon to over two billion in 2013, according to this new report.

THE VISION
The report titled, Mobile TV: Executing the Vision says the vast majority of users currently access free-to-air mobile TV, but pay-TV will catch on as high-quality madefor-TV programming becomes widely available on subscription-based channels. Mobile TV is a killer app, said Naqi Jaffery, President and Chief Analyst, Telecom Trends International. Just as mobile voice is becoming the primary means of voice communication, mobile TV will eventually become the primary means of accessing television, Mr. Jaffery said. The momentum generated by mobile TV has surprised many industry observers, Mr. Jaffery said. Despite the multiplicity of standards and lack of uniform frequency allocation, mobile TV is making a tremendous impact on the marketplace, he said. According to the report, the market is seeing the evolution of multi-network architecture with the same device supporting more than one standard. However, the report says, DVB-H has emerged as the de facto mobile TV standard

EUROPEAN US DIGITAL TV
This Review Report addresses the digital TV marketplace in the US and Western Europe. As analogue switch off looms and new entrants make strong moves into the sector, it is essential for players across the value chain to have an understanding of market trends, dynamics and industry developments. This report addresses the evolving market place and provides forecasts split by region and platform. Outlines market level trends split by national markets in Western Europe as well as highlighting developments in the US. Provides in-depth analysis on developments for each of the different TV platforms including cable, satellite, DTT and IPTV. offerings in order to acquire and retain customers. Datamonitor expects that moving towards MPEG-4/H.264 AVC systems will promote the entrance of additional competitors into the IPTV market. Smaller European Internet service providers (ISPs) in particular are expected to utilize the efficiencies of the coding standard to create IPTV services. Gain insight into market growth split by platform, service operator and region. Gain insight into initiatives and strategies employed by service operators to remain competitive. Understand PVR and HD adoption across Western Europe and the US. Cable and satellite TV companies are hard at work to convince consumers of their continuing value in the years ahead, as free multichannel digital TV enters the market. Premium content such as sports and movies will be one of their trump cards but advanced TV services such as video-ondemand (VOD), high-definition TV (HDTV), and digital video recorder (DVR) functions, are also likely to be important differentiators between free and pay TV services. But competition is also emerging from a different angle of the Internet. By the time most countries have switched off their analog TV signal, broadband Internet users will have enough bandwidth available to them to access high quality video over the Internet, and a whole new set of players will move into the TV market.

Digital Satellites Emergence

hile satellite television has been around for several years it is recently that more and more individuals have begun to switch over to satellite television. When the satellite was first introduced it was not always available in every area due to the large dish that was required to receive the signal. In the last fifteen years the satellites have become a small dish that is easily installed on porch railings, roofs, and the sides of apartment buildings. Other satellite equipment that you will find on the market includes satellite radios. Rather than listening to the regular radio most individuals find satellite radio without commercial interruptions and constant coverage more useful in their homes and cars. When you discuss digital satellite equipment with friends you often hear many reasons why converting to this new technology is worth it. First most will tell you the equipment can be a little more expensive than just having cable television when you speak about satellite television. The difference between cable and satellite lies in the purchase of equipment. In order to get the same picture from cable as you do on a satellite you have to rent the

equipment from the service provider. This makes your overall costs increase. While purchasing satellite equipment may be expensive it is worth the picture and the one time cost. You may also find that there are deals for purchasing satellite equipment, such as buying a new television and receiving the digital satellite equipment free. So while cost may be an issue many have found it more cost effective to switch to satellite television. There are downsides to satellite television unless you have receivers for each room. The satellite is still based on having each television hooked up to the one receiver and therefore each room will have the same channel. This can be a problem when you have teenagers, but then again there are several reasons for having satellite television. While it does not make sense to most individuals, cable television tends to have more problems with weather than a satellite. Yes, rain, snow, and wind can interfere with your satellite signal, but it usually lasts a few minutes or during the worst of the storm. Cable tends to lose service because of the coaxial cable that is run all over. The cable can be cut, the weather can knock over the poles, or any number of reasons that could take days to fix.

DMB Market in Korea

According to the latest report, the number of Satellite Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (S-DMB) subscribers has reached 440,000 since the service launch in May 2005, as of February 2006, while the number of Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (TDMB) subscribers has reached 110,000 since the service launch in December 2005.
T-DMB service is offered at no charge, allowing users with DMB device to freely watch TV programs on their handsets. Based on the current number of DMB subscribers, the DMB market in Korea will grow to the amount of 136.9 billion KRW in 2006, says David Kim, chief consultant. Since the commercial launch of Satellite DMB and Terrestrial DMB, a wide array of DMB devices has been released. The DMB device manufacturers are focusing on developing devices with more than two functions such as Terrestrial DMB, Satellite DMB, WiBro and HSDPA. The major manufacturers include LG, Pantech and Samsung but there are also many smaller manufacturers offering diversified devices, such as USB and PMP-type DMB devices. The report, titled DMB Market in Korea Service, Device and the Future, forecasts the development of Korean DMB market

by covering the market environment, related issues, the development status, the outlook, and devices of Korean DMB service. In addition, the report aims to set a direction for the better environment in mobile TV service by showing the development status and outlook of the Korean DMB service to market players such as overseas communications providers, broadcasters, device vendors, contents providers, etc. Digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) services based on two different technologies, terrestrial DMB (TDMB) and satellite DMB (S-DMB), have been in commercial operation since 2005. Despite their similarity in terms of consumer experience, enabling users to watch TV on the move, T-DMB and SDMB are undergoing different development scenarios. Suran Seong examines the current development of the two mobile broadcasting technologies and identifies the lessons for deployment in other markets. Since the launch of the first satellite digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) service in May 2005, Korea has been a trailblazer for mobile broadcasting services. While sales of DMB-enabled mobile devices are growing, service providers' financial results have shown little improvement. Suran Seong assesses the progress and issues so far.

CABLE TV
C
able TV is a method of providing homes with television using laid cables rather than the more common broadcasting method with radio waves. The signal is usually sent through coaxial cables which are laid and then connected directly to the customer's television allowing them to receive the Cable TV signal. Cable TV is usually provided by private companies, many of them offering their customers a cable TV package that will allow them access to many more TV channels than the standard terrestrial signal. Recently, with the rise of broadband internet technology a number of companies providing cable TV services will also incorporate a broadband connection into the deal. The technology used for Cable TV has been available for many years, however it was not until the late eighties that Cable TV became commonplace in the UK. In the USA cable TV is extremely popular and it is estimated that almost 60% of homes in America are subscribed to at least a basic Cable TV service. Cable TV has been available in American since 1948, but it was initially used to allow people living in remote areas where the radio signal broadcast by TV stations was weak access to TV.

AND SERVICES
Since its early inception Cable TV has become big business in America, and there are a number of private companies offering cable TV services who are in direct competition with each other. The number of companies offering a broadband and telephone connection with their cable TV packages has increased significantly. An increasing number of television and internet companies are able to provide their customer with cable services directly to their homes, allowing them access to a wide range of cable TV stations or high speed internet. Some companies are able to provide both of these services in one package, and this is becoming a very popular option for many homeowners, as the bills for their internet service, television and telephone are all combined into one monthly payment which is very easy to keep track off. One of the reasons that cable services are becoming so popular; especially cable internet is the fact that it is generally very reliable. Many of the TV companies that were previously only available through a satellite connection have moved into the cable industry. Cable TV is considered to be much more effective and efficient than satellite as there is less chance of loosing the connection.

RUSSIA TO LAUNCH TWO TRANSMITTER SATELLITES

Meeting the demand of sending telemetric and research data, two transmitter satellites, Luch 5A and Luch 5B, will be launched by the end of 2011 to fully cover the International Space Station (ISS), Federal Space Agency officials have said. Currently, the US space shuttles deliver cargo that will stop flying in 2010-2011. "We hope to launch the first satellite next year," manned programs department head Alexei Krasnov told Itar-Tass. Russian Soyuz spaceships flying cargo have limited capacities - they can return up to 250 kilograms of cargo to the Earth. "Thus, the focus will shift onto satellite transmission of research data," Krasnov said. At present, the information is being transmitted via American satellites. National satellites become a priority of Russia, he said.

ISRO PLANS TO BUILD TWO SATELLITES

ISRO is planning to build two new satellites especially for environmental monitoring even as it is stepping up efforts to use its

assessment on agriculture conditions and weather to effectively help people on the ground in co-ordination with other government agencies. "One (satellite) is mainly for studying aerosols and related things and another one for trace gases (carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitric oxide and sulphur dioxide, among others)," Indian Space Research Organisation chairman G Madhavan Nair said. He said the satellites are in line with what Union ministry of environment and forests wants. Nair recently had a discussion with Union minister of state Jairam Ramesh, who is now expected to submit a note to Prime Minister on the subject. Nair said while Bangalore-headquartered ISRO would build these satellites, it would work with the Ministry to put together a competent team to analyse the data from the missions and study the climate change.

TV ON A LAPTOP
Is it possible to monitor satellite TV on a laptop. Free to air or others? (Fazal Kamal, Karachi) A: Yes, if you have a TV tuner card in your PC, you can hook it up to the beneficiary for your satellite service. However, you can't just plug the satellite cable directly to the laptop.

SATELLITE CHANNELS
able receive satellite Q:2Why am Iwhen Itodon't have a channels satellite?" (Moeen Khan, via e-mail) A: When we hooked up our new HDTV and expected "it" to find our cable channels that we pay for, we also are able to receive many satellite channels. Some of them are those lowlife "secret" channels that nobody should want...much less pay extra to receive, and I don't WANT them coming into my house. My cable company says there is nothing they can do. Any ideas about where these "things" are coming from? My next door neighbor and across the street neighbor both have satellite dishes, but don't know how I could receive the channels if I don't have anything related to satellite service in my home.

HDTV TUNER
any channel Q:3Can we watch HDTV tuner if you don't have the yet? (Touseef Ahmed, Dubai) A: Sure. HDTV is available with any UHF antenna. And the best part is, it's uncompressed, whereas that Satellite receiver has to compress the signal due to bandwidth issues.

DISH ANTENNA
an apartment. Can I still Q:5Ia live in (M.S Hassan, Karachi) get dish? A: Generally - yes, if you have a balcony. The law demands that your landlord must give you permission. FCC rules permit residents of rental property to install a dish only in areas that are subject to the renter's exclusive control and use. This means an area that you may use, but that is not available for the general use of all tenants. Such an area include a balcony, yard, patio, deck or other area that only you have the right to use. If you have such an area, there's no problem, you may install a dish.

HDTV
the Difference Q:4What isTV and HDTV?Between via Digital (Lal Jan, e-mail) A: Here is where things may start to get confusing for the consumer. All HDTV is digital, but not all Digital TV is HDTV. As stated previously, in the answer to question #1, the same bandwidth for digital TV broadcasting can either used to supply a video signal (or several) and other services, or can be used to transmit a single HDTV signal.

DTV
we switching Q:6 Why areIqbal, Duabi) to DTV? (Amjad A: DTV is a more flexible and efficient technology than the current analog system. In the same bandwidth in which WZZM provides one analog programming channel, we may provide a super sharp "high definition" (HDTV) program or multiple "standard definition" DTV programs simultaneously. Providing several program streams at one time is called "multicasting." The number of programs we can send on our digital channel depends on the level of picture detail, also known as "resolution," desired in each programming stream.

TV SERVICE
service? Q:7 What is satellite TV(Wajahat How much does it cost? Hakeem, Hyderabad) A: Satellite TV service gets its TV signals from satellites in geosynchronous orbit. Because they stay in the same position relative to the earth's surface at all times, once a satellite antenna (usually, a dish of some kind) is properly aimed, it can be left as-is thereafter. Satellite signals are broadcast from a ground station to multiple satellites, which then broadcast those signals back to the earth across huge expanses of territory.

SATELLITE PROVIDERS
bundled Q:10What kinds offrom cableservices are available providers? Satellite providers? Who else gets involved? (Waqar Ahmed, Abbotabad) A: When it comes to channel lineups, both satellite and cable providers apparently compete on the same playing field. Both offer all kinds of family channels, lifestyle channels, sport channels, news channels, movie channels and HDTV packages. Generally, cable takes the edge on local channel offerings and on-demand services, and satellite takes the edge on sports and movie packages, as well as for high-ticket pay-per-view and entertainment offerings.

TV SIGNAL
service Q:11 How doescable andavailability differ for satellite? What effects does this have on my TV signal? (Qasim Shah, via e-mail) A: The biggest difference between cable and satellite is availability. Cable is available only in neighborhoods where the provider can run a cable into your home. Satellite is available anywhere you can put an antenna that can see one of the satellite provider's satellites in orbit (this does require a line of sight to that satellite). In most metro areas, cable is a viable option and worth comparing to satellite. In most rural areas, satellite is the only option, because cable isn't available.

SATELLITE TV the Q:8 What arecableprimary differences between and satellite TV

services? (Khalid Usman, Peshawar) A: That's tough to say, because the hundreds of cable TV providers that exist all have somewhat different offerings, and because even the offerings from the two primary satellite providers also differ substantially. Conventional wisdom is that satellite TV offers more and better for-a-fee sports and entertainment packages, and a broader selection of HDTV channels, while cable TV offers more and better local stations (they will often rebroadcast all of the OTA channels in a viewing area on cable, and usually operate one or more stations of their own including news, weather, and public access programming).

A SIMPLE AND QUICK GLANCE AT FTA RECEIVERS

nown as a special kind of satellite receiver that is developed to detect unencrypted signals from different satellite dishes, Freeto-Air (FTA) receiver has the capacity to receive data that follow MPEG-2 formats. Since this receiver was created for this sole purpose, FTA receiver does not have the capacity of decoding satellite transmissions from DirecTV and Dish Networks. However, this receiver has distinct functions that individuals may find useful and helpful when it comes to television and radio broadcasting. The most common type of FTA receiver looks like a typical hardware box and is similar with DirecTV receivers, as well as Dish Networks. Meanwhile, the other type of FTA receiver allows people to receive free-to-air satellite transmissions in their computer systems. By just looking at the appearance of FTA receivers, individuals can already determine its type. Before purchasing and installing an FTA receiver there are some factors that people should first consider to assess the efficiency, reliability, and functionality of the equipment. For instance, it is best to know if the receiver that they like to install features an Electronic Program Guide. It is also advantageous if it has the capacity to
AUGUST

zoom pictures. Additionally, people should also consider whether the receiver can decode picture-in-picture transmissions and if it features a Personal Video Recorder. When it comes to radio frequencies, an FTA receiver must have the capacity to see and copy two differing channels at the same time. Moreover, people should also know if the receiver features interfaces for S-Video and Dolby Sony/Philips Digital Interconnect Format. In addition, this receiver should also feature Blind Search Power Scan to detect the different channels from a single satellite. Finally, it is advantageous if people choose FTA receivers that have On Screen Displays. For those who have interest in purchasing FTA receivers they should buy from manufacturers that have good reputation in developing such equipment. Some of the best FTA receiver developers in the world are Pansat, Viewsat, and Fortec. Other manufacturers that also excel in creating such equipment are Coolsat, BlackBird, and Ariza. Consumers can also purchase receivers from UltraStar, Twinhan, and Digiwave. To enhance the functionalities of FTA satellite receivers, people can add several advance equipment. For those who want to get transmissions that follow KuBand and C-Band format, they should equip the receivers with a satellite dish.

Inside view
In the 1990s, the space community witnessed the revolution that is now the Small Satellite market. Small satellites were initially written off as not being large enough to have any real practical function; however, since the early 2000s, space companies large and small have been falling over themselves to get involved in Small Satellites. This class of spacecraft has proven to be much more useful than the skeptics proffered. With the Small Satellite market experiencing brisk business, many of us within the Small Satellite community are now wondering where the next revolution will come from. Most think that the smart money is on Picosatellites and Nanosatellites, but this class of spacecraft has yet to prove its technical capability, ye it is clear that it is fast becoming the most economically viable method of accessing space. Following a rapid growth in the number of picosatellite and nanosatellite missions over the last 12 to 18 months, the number of offthe-shelf subsystems and services available for microspacecraft missions has also grown dramatically. This growth in demand for microspacecraft related hardware is leading to changes in the way that spacecraft hardware is being bought and sold. In 2007, Clyde Space completed the development of their first Cubesat subsystem. It was an Electrical Power System (EPS) that was physically and electrically compatible with the standard Cubesat format, and also compatible with the Cubesat Kit from Pumpkin, Inc. This standardisation of size and electrical connections has meant that it was possible for Clyde Space to produce the EPS in relatively large numbers; for example, our current production run is for 50 units. Due to the ability to mass produce a satellite subsystem such as this, the cost of the system is now low enough to be purchased outright with a credit card. In fact, the author would love to say that the idea of credit card sales for Cubesat systems was his, but the reality is that most of our Cubesat customers want to pay with credit card and regularly request to do so. Therefore, it is the market that is driving the change in the way that these systems are sold, but with this change will come opportunity to make significant steps forward in microspacecraft cost, schedule and engineering design.

TELEVISION IN THE 21ST CENTURY

Its not just about Entertainment. In the more than sixty years since television was adapted for commercial use and first started appearing in American homes, TV programming has always been primarily about entertainment, not education.
he entire concept of television had a single purpose: entertain people in their homes, get their attention and, when you have accomplished that sell them products and services. After all, corporations that sponsored the programs paid the bills. It was important to television executives (make that critically important) that corporate sponsors make money. These executive believed back then, and still believe today, that entertainment draws audiences and that educational or instructional TV is not always entertaining. Audiences, the larger the better, of course, help corporate sponsors of TV programming sell products and services and make money. It is as simple as that and always has been. And yet, the formerly locked-in mindset of TV network
AUGUST

executives and programmers is beginning to change. Thats because educational TV has become entertaining. Oh, it cant be said that every show that attempts to educate viewers is fun or interesting to watch. Thats still not true. But many of todays shows that are built around instruction or education are enjoyable. The people who produce such programming understand that it is essential that the shows they sell to networks, shows that receive a television time slot, must be entertaining or there will be no viewers (or, at the very least, just a few viewers). So now in the 21st century, shows that are meant to impart information or instruct or educate (and there are lots of them) have found a way to captivate and involve their viewers by making the programming entertaining. Its evident in shows that cover human history show and tell how products are manufactured cover political discourse and current events teach about government enter American courtrooms and so much more. It began as a kind of classroom in a picture tube, but today, in the 21st century, educational TV is finally entertaining. Satellite TV too can sometimes be the main cause for enjoying a good time together. For example, on a gaming night you can invite some of your friends to watch the game on your HDTV. The dish HD connection will allow you to get the best quality true to life picture on TV.
