Michael Grant enrolled at Tufts University in part because he could perform with the schools Beelzebubs a cappella group. He joined at a near perfect time. While singing with the Beelzebubs, the group serenaded President Barack Obama, provided background vocals for a Glee album and performed at concerts throughout the country, including Alaska. And that was all in Grants first semester on campus. The concert gigs keep coming, including a noon student workshop and 1:30 p.m. performance Sunday at Sandymount Elementary School in Sandymount. The Beelzebubs, founded in 1962 when a group of Tufts male students gathered to sing, have recorded 27 studio albums and three live albums. And they also provided the harmonious background vocals for Glee: The Music Presents The Warblers. Just a few weeks into the semester, Glee reps contacted the Beelzebubs to gauge their interest in contributing to the show and an album. The Fox drama-comedy introduced the Dalton Academy Warblers in its second season as a regional competitor to William McKinley Highs New Directions. It was an opportunity the Beelzebubs simply could not pass up, said Grant, a sophomore music major from Corvallis, Ore. They recorded the background vocals on a cover of Katy Perrys hit Teenage Dream in a New York studio and cut several other tracks for the album at a studio within walking distance of the Tufts Medford, Mass., campus. Meanwhile, Darren Criss, who portrays The Warblers front man Blaine, recorded his vocals in Los Angeles. Even though the group and Criss have never met, they combined for an album with sales in

The fourth annual Jump In will give students a chance to learn more about participating in show choir and learn skills for it. What it is: Jump In features workshops in hip-hop dance, vocal performance and acting. It is organized by Tyler Lyons, a North Carroll High School graduate. He started Jump In as part of a class project. Who it is for: This years Jump In will feature workshops for elementary school students and another for middle and high school students. Anyone who has an interest in singing or performing is welcome. Jump In is for middle and high school students. Jump In Junior is for elementary school students. When: Jump In runs from 9:30-4 p.m. March 17. At 4 p.m., students will showcase what they learned in a performance.
