Overview on the existing types of tools for collaboration in a Web 2.0 world

In the web 2.0 world, we have different kinds of tools. These tools can be sort in different categories for various purpuse. I posted different web addresses and an excel file where I list a long list of web 2.0 tools in the forum.

II. Type of Web 2.0 Tools that you are using already
I used different tools web 2.0 in different categories that correspond to business or personal as associative needs. Social networking let me to maintain and develop professional contact with people that I can not meet on regular base because of the location distance. Collaborative works is important to share and realise project in professional sphere as well associative activities. The flexibility of the tools allows me to participate or ask to people to participate independently of the cost, the distance or the time consuming, especially for volunteers or international team members. Some other tools (as Research, eLearning, Information, Sharing, Publishing, Blogs) are used in the professional and private sphere to maintain and develop skills and knowledge as to produce professional knowledge and to share it with peers. The last tools (Social bookmarking, Branding) are use in the professional activities for the personal branding. The rest is using to participate and give back in social public space as well to invest in social activities. For each tools I find some advantages and disadvantages:

Simple, easy to use and orderly. Socialize with other over distance and lack of time. Makes it easier to join groups having similar interest. Professional networking is an essential skill for career success. Ability to join special interest groups and to ask questions. Idem. Good tools for parallel use.

Overcrowding and weakening long distance relationship. Contributes wide-range procrastination and rampant addiction. To be stalking is possible. Time consuming and not fee for full use. To be careful about images and statements you upload. Idem. There is just one profile per person. Concern about privacy of data. Cost to create your own communities. Ownership rights is own by the company. Difficult to migrate any user or content to other platforms.

It isnt a full CMS product. As with any open source project (where anyone can download and have a poke around the code and find security holes) you need to keep your installation bang up to date. III. Advantages and disadvantages of Web 2.0 Tools


Globally, I found some advantage to use all theses tools. First, information can be pulled from a number of different places, and permit me to communicate and to collaborate with others and spread ideas rather than receiving information from one single authority. I can view events from more than one perspective. I can find information that would otherwise take a lot of time to acquire if even never. In opposition it is some disadvantages. This technology dependent from logical and technical infrastructures (provider, network, computer ). As I can find accurate and hidden information in the network, this information can be subject to manipulation as in physical life. Also the possible lack of protection on private life as well the work/life balance can be hard to achieve.

IV. Reflection on Web 2.0 Tools


Almost the web 2.0 tools increase the possibility of accessibility to information, creativity, information exchange, connectivity and collaboration between people all over the world in a non necessary controlling manner or central authority. The system can be self organize around ideas or projects as the Open Source community or Anonymous action. But tools will not replace people and make them working or collaborate better if they dont want to do so; Or they do not know or afraid to do it. All behaviour behind the use of these tools existed hundred years ago within different forms. The difference was that before it was under an authority of a person or a group of persons (boss, professional alliances, secret society, alumni) and thru more or less physical contact. We can say that collaboration is not about the tools used but more about mindset. We can just expect that the web 2.0 tools will introduce a paradigm change in the people behaviour related to connectivity and transparency. We can compare the web 2.0 tools as the introduction of the printing industry in the 15th century that brings a paradigm change in the access of information and knowledge with the good and the bad of this paradigm change.
