Byrne, Peter. "Ancient Sailing and Navigation." Nabataea.net. N.p., n.d. Web. 20 Feb 2012. This web page is about how people used to sail before 1000. The part I read was about how someone (they think it was the Nabataeans) invented the lateen sail. I also got three imagesone was a tacking/wearing diagram, one was a dhow ship, and one was a diagram showing the different tacks you would have to take if you were on different ships. Campbell, I.C. "The Lateen Sail in World History." University of Hawaii Press, 1995. Web. 26 Jan 2012. <http://www.uhpress.hawaii.edu/journals/jwh/jwh061p001.pdf>. This is a document about the authors account of the lateen sail and what it was in world history. The author says that the lateen sail made a small impact and that it really wasnt a big deal. Some things I got from this were how the two sails work, and how people invented the lateen sail. Haven, Kendall. 100 greatest science inventions of all time. Westport, CT, USA: Libraries, Unlimited, 2006. Print. This book is about 100 inventions which the author thinks are the most important. From this, I learned about how Henry the Navigator invented the Caravel and why it was such a great thing. I also found out how it impacted exploration. "History of the Caravel." Texas A+M University. Texas A+M University, n.d. Web. 29 Jan 2012. <http://nautarch.tamu.edu/shiplab/01George/caravela/htmls/Car avel This site is also about the caravels invention and how Henry the Navigator invented them, but it goes into mare detail about when and where they were used. I will use a lot of those details in my project. Spielvogel, Jackson J. Glencoe World History. 2. New York City, NY, USA: Glencoe/McGraw-Hill, 2004. Print. This is a book about the history of the world. The things I was reading about was Middle Ages trade and exploration. I will use these to show what trade and exploration were like before and

after the Caravel was invented, to show the long and short-term impacts. Unger, Richard W. Cogs, Caravels, and Galleons: The Sailing Ship 1000-1600. London: Brasseys Ltd., 1994. Print. This is a book about all the different sailing ships leading up to the seventeenth century. This book helped me understand the two different sailing traditions before 1200. It also explained how lateen sails and square sails are different.
