THE WLBC BULLETIN

West Lynchburg Baptist Church

February 26, 2012 Volume 2, Issue 8

The church with heart in the heart of the city.

Just Around The Corner...

Consumed By Stuff In The Man in the Mirror, Patrick Morley writes that the word consumption means something totally different to modern people than it did 150 years ago. Consumption, now known as tuberculosis, is a wasting disease. Before the advent of antibiotics, tuberculosis could be slowed but rarely cured, Morley writes. The long-term effect of the disease was to slowly devour to consume all the victims health and vigor. Today, consumption is viewed as positive for merchants and the economy, Morley notes. But for people mired in debt, the 19th-century understanding of the term may be more true-tolife. Our wants are consuming us. To avoid being consumed financially and spiritually consider these words from Jesus: Store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also (Matt. 6:20-21, NRSV). Food For Friends T.C. Miller and WLBC are partnering together to start a Food for Friends program because, in our current economy, it is becoming increasingly difficult for families to make ends meet. Our church will help by providing 10 youngsters per week with nutritious foods/ snacks to eat over the weekend. The food will be put in backpacks for the kids. We are asking for WLBC members to help by supplying the food for the backpacks. Please bring items by the office and leave in the box marked TC Miller Food for Friends. You can contact Robin Hall, during the day, with any questions: 384-8949.

In Lukes gospel, as Jesus prepared to enter the city Jesus said that he thought many in Jerusalem would not accept him and his ministry. Even so, he said that he had the desire to gather your children together as a _____________, and you were not willing! Which statement below belongs in the blank above? A. mother dog gathers her pups to her side ; B. hen gathers her brood under her wings; C. father protects his wife and his children; D. shepherd gathers his flock (The answer is in Luke 13:34)

Hit Him Again, Lord! The crumbling, old church building needed remodeling, so the preacher made an impassioned appeal, looking directly at the richest man in town. At the end of the message, the rich man stood up and announced, "Pastor, I will contribute $1,000." Just then, plaster fell from the ceiling and struck the rich man on the shoulder. He promptly stood again and shouted, "Pastor, I will increase my donation to $5,000." Before he could sit back down, plaster fell on him again, and again he virtually screamed, "Pastor, I will double my last pledge." He sat down, and an even larger chunk of plaster fell hitting him on the head. He stood once more and hollered, "Pastor, I will give $20,000!" This prompted a deacon to shout, "Hit him again, Lord! Hit him again!" Pray for Missionaries: The Knight Family (Japan) www.theknights.multiply.com

On mission to reach people for the family of God.
