Wights
Ex Libris Nocturnis - http://www.nocturnis.net By: Fabin lvarez (email: adban@interlink.es) Summary: House Hafgan, of the shadow Court The Shadow Court has a dark heart. Old grey things of death and misery dwell amongst them. The young, the ignorant, call them "Wights." The old know better. The lords of House Hafgan are almost unknown to both the nobles and the commoners of the fae world; being part of the nobility of the Shadow Court, "Wights" are truly made of the stuff nightmares are born. A long time ago, there happened a great tragedy in Arcadia; the Night, an entity of the Nightmare Realms, attacked the fiefs of a Noble House called House Hafgan. House Hafgan was wiped out, and all of their members disappeared. Being an Unseelie House interested in death, the dead and the Underworld, few Kithain missed them. Some whispered horrible tales, saying that the house founder, Hafgan of the Blackened Heart, had summoned himself the Night and embraced the horrid creature to become a Lord of Nightmare. Hafgan himself had been for centuries a rival of Arawnn; the Welsh ruler of the Underworld, and it was said that he wanted for himself the power of the dead. One day, a fog fell over the tombs of the ancient kings of House Hafgan, and silence covered the lands, which had withered in absence of a ruler. Nobody dared to go to the ancient barrow fields to investigate what was happening; and so, a night of ill omen, the doors of the ancient tombs opened, and the Hafgan castle was rebuilt, and a new blazon rose on its battlements. The lost sidhe had returned to Arcadia... but they were not as they had been. War raged for years between the Hafgan sidhe, twisted beyond hope, and their former brothers and sisters. The Wights commanded terrible Arts, and were sorcerers as dangerous as the Eiluned themselves. But it was then the Golden Age of Arcadia, and the Seelie and Unseelie Courts triumphed over the shadows, and Castle Hafgan was ruined, and Wights were disbanded, and hunted and killed on sight. They went on hiding, and became a mere shadow, something of times long past, and best forgotten. But the Shining Host remembered.... and feared their return. And then came the Shattering, and the changeling way... and for the next 600 years, the Wights disappeared from the minds of the commoners... With the Resurgence, the Sidhe returned to the world. And with them, in the wake of the steeds of the Shining Host, returned the Wights, riding Nightmares and fell beasts. Always careful, the Wights went again in hiding under the leadership of their High Lord, Leglod the Necromancer. And so they waited, plotting and scheming, until they were contacted by representatives of the Shadow Court. The Thallain were delighted with the arrival of the Wights; unruly and vicious as they are, Bogies, Boggarts and the like are no match in either ferocity or cunning for one of those Nightmare Lords. Unseelie and Shadow Sidhe were less delighted, quickly seeing them as rivals, and a tense state of rivalry and cold hostility exists between both Kiths. The original House, House Hafgan, was totally destroyed by the Night, and forgotten by the Seelie nobility. Its blazon was struck and discredited, and it can only be found in the most ancient of the fae texts, as its supposed that it was slaughtered around the 60 or 70 A.D. The Wights kept the name, but raised a new blazon, one that is not accepted nor widely known by the Seelie nobility. Blazon: In a purple field, or, engraved an ashen butterfly. Appearance: Wights are ghostly and ethereal in their fae miens; they tend to be clad in chain mail armour and battle-dress, so it's uncommon to see them in other attires. Their human seemings tend to look like crazed psychos, vagrants, or dark, terrible strangers not healthy to be asked questions. Lifestyle: Wights are extremely greedy and territorial; so, their mortal jobs tend to be those of watchers, security guards and the likes. They are attracted to graveyards, and they tend too to be cemetery guardians. Like the Sidhe, Wights possess human bodies when they undergo the Chrysalis, as none of them went the Changeling way. Wights tend to posses noble titles, but they are only accepted by the Shadow Court and the most depraved members of the Unseelie houses.

Childlings: Childling are monsters; darkly ethereal creatures, they love to play trick-and-treat with goblins, beasties and Unseelie Nocker Childlings. Wilders: Wilders begin to accept their duties in the Shadow Court, and are best described as Dark Paladins. When Wights become wilders, they begin to hoard gold and jewellery. Grumps: Grumps are horrible, shadowy beings. Nothing can be say about them, because there is nothing to be seen inside their full plates and chain mail. If you look inside the helmet of a Wight grump, you will just see two pinpoints of red light, his eyes. Affinity: Like Sidhe, Wights have no spent enough time on Earth to posses an affinity. Birthrights: Mastery of Shadows: Wights are adept at stalking and hiding. They cannot botch Stealth rolls, and suffer no penalties in partial or total darkness. Dark Royalty: Wights are as impressive and terrible as Sidhe; when enraged, most people have to roll Willpower (8) to stand to them. Wights cannot botch Etiquette or Intimidation rolls, and any Cantrip intended to make them look embarrassed fails automatically. Masters of Magic: Wights are masters of the Fae Arts, and gain 1 extra success on all their Cantrips. They are also said to know a forbidden Dark Art called "Necrotics", related to death and the Underworld. Frailties: Horrid as Sin: In their human seemings, Wights cannot have more than 2 points in Appearance. In their fae mien, their effective Appearance Trait is 0, and they fail all Appearance rolls. Hated by the Sun: Helios hates and loathes the Wights; in direct sunlight, Wights cannot Call upon the Wyrd, and have a +1 difficulty to all rolls. Blackened Hearts: Wights are repelled by innocence and pure feelings; they cannot gain Glamour using Reverie, and must resort to Ravage, Rhapsody or Rapture. Quote: "Quiet be hand, and mouth, and spirit, until the Sky grow dark and Winter be here. Silent be Glades, and Trods, and Freeholds, until the Night is upon us, forever."
