Abstract
Hypotheses were formed based on surveys were that conducted, and SPSS data that was run.

Midterm 3

Hypothesis
The number of hours a student watches television on weeknights has an effect on that students
overall mathematics proficiency exam scores. When a student watches more television they are
simultaneously spending less time and focus on education, homework, studying, and other
academic activities that prepare for proficiency exams. Therefore, when the proficiency exam is
taken that particular student is ill-prepared.
The number of hours a student watches television during weekdays will increase or
decrease their test scores, depending on their sex. The outcome of each schools scores as a
whole will consequently determine which school gets the service of the free lunch program. The
percentage of girls who watch little television during the week will have higher test scores as
opposed to females who watch more television. Females as a whole will have higher test scores
than males all together.
Rationale
Based on logic and common knowledge the hours of study, for a student, will have a
great impact on grades and test scores. When a student devotes less time to studying and more
time to watching television their test scores will consequently suffer. A question arises; what if
data shows that even females or maybe males who watch a considerable amount of television on
weekdays still have high scores? It is possible that if a controlling group has high scores despite
the amount of television they watch during the week, that controlling group may be naturally
strong in mathematics or more academically sound in general.
If a student scores low on the mathematics proficiency exam that student will then be
eligible for the federal free lunch program. Students who score higher have a lessened chance of

being eligible; therefore schools with more students who score low will have a higher percentage
of federal free lunch recipients.
