My name is Sam Hopper, a 17 year old track and cross country runner. I have been involved in running since I was a little tacker but began serious running two years ago, when I competed in my first national competition. I have recently begun racing as a steeplechaser in the athletic scene and enjoyed my debut in the 2011 NZ Secondary Schools athletics champs very much. The atmosphere of such a national event is something Id like to introduce many students to this year. As a runner I have acquired many qualities; being a risk taker in goal setting and perseverance are two examples. This year, as Wanganui High Schools male Head of Sport, I am setting a goal;

I feel privileged to partner Renee Nyman, a world class athlete who I know is going to fulfil the position of female Head of Sport well. It is evident in her success that she is a devoted and passionate person which will certainly reflect this year. Both Renee and I are thoroughly looking forward to 2012 and encourage any student to approach us for any questions relating to sport, physical education, advice or simply to chat.

2009:

To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift. Steve Prefontaine
This quote from the legendary distance runner Steve Prefontaine, truly sums up the effort the twelve Wanganui High School athletes put into their various events at the 38th New Zealand Secondary Schools Track & Field Championships. Nick La Roches Prefontaine-like front running tactics proved a good move in gaining a personal best 1500m time of 4:28.19. Nick went on to compete in the Senior Boys 6km Road Race on the following day in which he gained 28th place in a time of 21:02. An impressive display of fitness, from James Wright showed a huge personal best in his Junior Boys 1500m Semi final, running 4:31.61 to gain a placing of 10th. James Dorgan ran smart in his 800m Junior Boys quarterfinal, placing 4th in a time of 2:11.04 to see him through to the semi final. James ran 2:10.49 finishing 6th in his semi final. The following morning James produced a 14:02 effort in the Junior Boys 4km road race to place him 20th in the country. A mere 30 seconds behind was team mate James Wright who ran an impressive 14:32 to place him 44th. Both boys were running neck and neck in the first lap of the two lap 4km route, until Dorgan made his move ahead. Another middle distance runner, Sophie Couper placed 4th in her Junior Girls 800m quarterfinal running 2:36.08 to qualify for the semi finals. Sophie went on to finish her semi final with a time of 2:37.14. Georgia Black produced an impressive performance in placing 10th in the Senior Girls 4km Road race in a time of 15:55. A pleasing dress rehearsal for the next road race in her final year in the age group. Riley Culver came 66th in the year 9 road race with a time of 11:00 for his 3km. Wanganui High School took three sprinters down to the championships, two Senior Girls; Chloe Caird, Hannah Johnston and Junior Boy Poutama Hamahona-Taiaroa. In the senior girls 100m quarter finals, unfortunately Chloe was disqualified, yet produced a pleasing 27.79 in her 200m heat. Poutama produced a 12.80 in his Junior Boys 100m preliminary heat and a 26.17 in his 200m preliminary heat. Hannah ran hard in her 400m quarterfinal with a time of 63.67 and gained a position in semi-final, which she ran a 63.39 to finish 7th.In the final event of the first day Sam Hopper had trouble jumping one of the steeples in the 2000m Open Boys steeplechase semi finals, clipping his spikes and tripping over. Yet still managed to set a new personal best and a Wanganui High School record of 6.32.58. This Semi-final performance gained Sam a start in the Final on the following day. In front of a full stadium on finals day, Sams luck had remained dull and this time he cleaned himself out on the same steeple resulting in a disappointing finish to such a gutsy weekend, ranking him 11th in New Zealand. In the 4x100m Senior girls semi final, our relay team consisting of Chloe Caird, Hannah Johnston, Sarah McDonald and Sophie Couper ran 53.44 only just missing out on progressing through to the final. The Senior Girls 4x400m team placed 7th in the country with a time of 4.20.96 in the final. In the junior boys 4x400m final our team of James Wright, James Dorgan, Riley Culver and Poutama Hamahona-Taiaroa ran 3.56.30 to place 7th in New Zealand also. In the field events, Georgia Flower gained a top 10 position in Discus with a throw of 28.75m followed with an 8th in Javelin throwing a personal best of 35.06m.

ATHLETICS
By Sam Hopper The last of the New Zealand Athletics Classic events was held on Saturday 11th February with the Porritt Classic, at Porritt Stadium in Hamilton. A small but high achieving group of talented athletes from Wanganui High School made the journey up as a group of five. The heat of the mighty Waikato weather was certainly a factor in setting personal bests as amazing conditions set the stage for what was to be a successful night. Our Boys team ran quality times in a strong field of 33 in the Dick Quax Secondary Schools 1500m, with both James Wright and Kenneth Padberg running personal bests over the distance. Sam Hopper came in first out of the team in 15th position with a time of 4:22.97 a mere 3 seconds off his own personal best, disappointing but motivating. James Wright ran an impressive personal best, finished in 19th position in 4:25.54, a huge personal best of 6 seconds. The newest member to the Wanganui High School family, Kenneth Padberg, ran his first ever 1500m, placing 24 in a time of 4:32.43, a very solid effort. In the Girls Dianne Rodger 1500m race, our very own Georgia Black ran solo in a time of 4:58.69 again a huge personal best and breaking the 5 minute barrier for the event. This effort placed her 9th out of an aggressive field of which 29 took the start line. The fifth athlete of the squad was Sarah MacDonald, whom ran in the 4x400m Wanganui composite team, finishing 2nd in their race. Sarah ran hard but the heat accompanied with her recovery from illness hindered her performance somewhat, yet still a very pleasing start to the season. Such events as the Porritt Classic provide our athletes with the chance to face the elite competition of their age groups, where personal bests are broken and success occurs. It certainly was a great experience and a good start to the 2012 season.

TENNIS
Tennis is booming at WHS. We now have 43 active members with 11 Year 9s joining this month. It is a great sight to see all 12 courts at the Wanganui Tennis club full of our players each Friday afternoon. A number of our players have been selected to represent Wanganui Rep teams this month against Manawatu Taranaki and Hutt Valley. Gabi Hiri, Georgia Millward, Ben Pilet and Jack Pilet are in the 14s age group team. Paris Butters Frede Wiese, Kieran Glentworth, Ben Ker and Michael Park are in the 16s team. Rising Year 9 star Paris Butters played outstandingly well to make the final of the Wanganui Tennis Club senior mixed doubles championship last weekend. Paris and her partner Ivan Southon lost out in the final, having destroyed several fancied pairs on their way there. This week sees WHS playing Wanganui Collegiate School in the first round of the NZ Secondary Schools National Championship qualifiers. We have entered both a boys team (Keiran Glentworth, Ben Ker, Michael Park and Jack Grant) and a mixed team (Paris Butters, Gabi Hiri, Frede Wiese, Dylan Rowe, Naoki Awata and Ben Pilet). We wish both teams the best of luck on what could be a long journey to make the top eight teams in New Zealand that qualify to go to Auckland in March for the prestigious national championship finals.

WHS ROWING
Wanganui Championships4th February 2012
Aramoho Wanganui Rowing Club (AWRC) had a golden day at the 2012 Wanganui Rowing Championships despite the light rain that fell most of the day. The Regatta was reduced to one day of racing with heats in the morning and finals from 10 am to 4.30 pm. Coach Ian Weenink and his team of 36 rowers made up of Wanganui High School students representing AWRC were kept busy having entered into 31 events, the Boys & Girls Novices, Boys Under 16, Boys & Girls Under 17, Women & Men Club and Open. Some athletes had 4 races in the one day. The boat ramp was a hive of activity with crew and boats in and out of the water. A highlight of the day was the Boys Under 16 coxed Quad Sculls winning performance against two Wanganui Collegiate crew, Clifton and Union in the Boys U17 coxed Quad Sculls combined event. A great start saw the boys take the lead and keep it all the way to the finish line. High fives and smiles on and off the water for Hugh Pawson (stroke), Tyler Manville, Joshua Pewhairangi, Noah Aiono and Reuben Gedye (coxswain). Sara-Jane Back was a clear winner on the day taking home four Gold Medals in the Girls U17 Single, Womens Open Single, Womens Open coxless Pair and Girls Under 17 coxed Quad Sculls. The Womens Novice coxed Eight won the Gold medal, pushed along by coxswain Danjelle Wilson, Kayla Spencer (stroke), Ashley ONeil, Kate Hoskin, Annabelle Schurhammer, Poppy Mitchell-Anyon, Sarah Sommerville, Amy Maree Chapman and Kadee Gedye. The next local regatta will be the Wanganui Secondary Schools Regatta on 3rd March 2012 See you on the Riverbank. An excellent Wanganui championship for AWRC (Wanganui High School Rowing Club) delivered thirteen gold medals, nine silver and three bronze, a great effort from the squad of rowers and coxswains. The medals for the Wanganui High School students were presented to the athletes at their School Assembly to profile the sport of Rowing at the School. We take this opportunity to acknowledge support from the Lion Foundation and Pub Charities for their generous funding to keep our Rowers on the water. Other results: 1st (Gold) Boys U16 coxed Eight, Mens Club coxless Quad Sculls, Girls U17 Double Sculls, Girls U17 coxed Four, Boys U16 coxed Four, Womens Club Pair, Boys U16 Double Sculls, 2nd (Silver) - Mens Club Pair, Womens Novice coxed Four, Mens Club Double Sculls, Boys U17 Single, Mens Club Single, Mens Novice coxed Quad Sculls, Mens Club coxed Four, Boys U16 Double Sculls, Womens Novice coxed Quad, 3rd (Bronze) Mens Novice coxed Four, Womens Club coxed Four, Womens Novice Double Sculls

Wanganui High 1ST XI Cricket have had a quality start to the season, currently sitting in third on the Wanganui mens premier one cricket competition. This season has brought out vast improvements throughout the team, as the team gained their first win in a year against the Wanganui Marist A team. Prior to a challenging match against Collegiate, the much improved and top all-rounder Jack Stewart agreed to have an interview surrounding the new improved team, and discuss briefly the upcoming fixtures including the Gillette cup against Wanganui Collegiate School. Jack certainly agrees the inclusive of Coach Mark Parsons has had a vital part to play in the new confidence the team has acquired.

L WHS VOLLEYBAL
The volleyball season was up and running quickly this year as trials started midway through week two of this term. After an hour and a half of showing our skills and playing tactics to the coaches, two boys and girls senior teams were selected alongside a junior boys team and the junior girls green and gold teams. This year, only the senior and junior girls teams were entered in the Thursday night round robin between schools in Wanganui. A more competitive competition on Wednesday nights will start later on in the year. After find team selection, it was straight into practice on Monday night and the first week of the round robin competition. The WHS Senior A Girls played the WHS Junior Green Team winning 30. The WHS Senior B girls played Turakina Maori Girls and drew but technically Turakina played a better game. It was a good start to the season after having only one practice with a completely new team so a lot more is to be expected from these teams in the weeks to come.

FIT CLUB
By Porchers Marsters Roger has been an off and on trainer for many, many years. I asked him what made him become a trainer? He said that its not about becoming a trainer its about becoming a friend that can provide others with a helping hand by showing them how important nutrition and fitness is in our lives (healthy lifestyle). The one thing Roger loves the most about being a trainer is seeing people achieve their goals and seeing them succeed both physically and mentally. As Roger doesn't just approve of physically abilities he also encourages you to do well in school by putting education first. Roger has had a lot of success here at Wanganui High School with both male and female students. I love to see everyone develop physically and mentally by helping students with their physical goals". Roger could have been a trainer anywhere in New Zealand but as he was offered a position at WHS he took it instantly. Because he wanted to rise to the challenge of stopping the health issues in our youth. The best way to find out how much someone has done for others, is to ask those involved, so here are a few of the students (from many) that appreciate what Roger has done for them. Porchers Marsters (female and male co-captain) People may think that Roger is just a trainer but he's more than that. I, and others in the gym who have been training with him, see him as a friend that you can rely on, trust and joke around with at times. But don't get me wrong he can push you to strive for your goals in life both physically and mentally. Roger has also given me a leadership role in the gym which gives me the opportunity to help others to become fitter and have a healthier lifestyle. He also allows me to set the standards for others. Roger is truly an inspiration for lifelong fitness, accomplishing goals in life and aiming for even more. He is truly amazing. Roger has made me wonder about what I want in life and what my goals are. He makes it seem that anything and everything is achievable with dedication and hard work. :) But I would also like to thank the school for accepting Roger as a trainer and also supplying the gym equipment that we all use.

Martin Davis Ive been going to the gym for about a year now and in that time Roger has constructed a perfect program to help me progress in my chosen sport. This program has had a huge impact on me to help me get stronger and to increased my endurance ability. Roger has become a great trainer for me but in the process he has become a true friend that I can trust and talk to. Roger pushes you to reach your goals in a positive way. But he also expects you to work hard to achieve your goals.

Anahera Millar: When I first met Roger six months ago I was terrified; not just of him but of actually training in the gym. But thanks to the girls-only gym sessions, Roger has made me feel less self-conscious. The biggest problem for me was not the training; it was my eating habits. Roger asked me to write down what I ate in a week. Everything from dinner to a little jelly bean. He helped me get my eating habits right and showed me how important exercise is in life. Roger is really friendly, once you get to know him. He helped me pursue my goals and reach for even more.

As you see Roger, you are a big inspiration to all of us so dont wander off anywhere because well be lost without you
Hannah Darby (female co-captain) I have known Roger since the start of 2011. I was quite unfit and didnt know much about health and fitness. I was happy that someone has opened a girls-only gym, as this made me feel less self-conscious while doing exercise. With Roger opening the gym for females every afternoon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, it gave me plenty of time to train each week including during the holidays. Meeting Roger was inspirational. He showed me the healthy side of life and all I could do to achieve my goals. My goals were to get fitter, eat healthier and stay slim. Roger has not only helped me with these goals but he has given me the opportunity to meet new people. I also teach others as I am one of the gyms co-captains. I hope to continue training and teaching others until I leave school. I would highly recommend Roger as a trainer for any type of person. Whether youre unfit or a sports freak, Roger is the one to go to in order to achieve your goals. He is also a great friend to talk to. Good on ya, Roger!

Akira Marsters (male co-captain) When I first met Roger in 2010 he earned my respect quickly and made me feel like I should be trying to earn his respect. As we started to progress in my training I started to see the results only because I followed his schedule and healthy food options. The more I attended the gym and listened to Roger the more I started to see my results take shape on the court (in my sport). I couldn't have achieved what I have to this present day without Roger. I know I haven't said this Roger but I really do appreciate what you have done for me with my physical appearance, showing me that education is just as important and also helping me with my eating habits.

SAILING
The Wanganui Secondary Schools' Sailing Regatta took place at the Wanganui Sailing Club on the morning of the 22 February 2012. Thirteen crews took part from Wanganui High School and Wanganui Collegiate. Three races were held in conditions of light wind and light rain. Unfortunately, racing was abandoned when the wind died away. Three different classes of boat were being raced; the times of which are adjusted by a handicap system. The racing action saw seven Starlings, five Toppers and one Feva take to the water. There was some very close racing at the front of the field between Jonny Matthews (Collegiate) and Emma Thomas (Wanganui High School). Jonny came away with two first places and a second, while Emma had two seconds and a first; both were sailing Starlings.
