MOTION: SOCIAL NETWORKING BRINGS MORE HARM THAN GOOD

1st Speaker Government Good morning/afternoon/day to the honourable speaker, ministers of the opposition team and members of the house. This house believes that SOCIAL NETWORKING BRINGS MORE HARM THAN GOOD. This is the motion for todays debate and we, as the government are going to make everyone present to agree with us that SOCIAL NETWORKING BRINGS MORE HARM THAN GOOD. First allow me to clarify the issue by providing the definition of the words social networking, harm and good. As a whole, our definition suggests that social networking has inflicted more physical, mental or moral injury than providing good impacts, which the opposition team believe is not true. Members of the house, Social networking DOES bring more negative impacts rather than positive ones. Ladies and gentlemen, We, define the word social networking as an online service that is based around the building and reflecting of social relations among individuals with common interest or social ties. While harm means inflict physical, mental or moral injury. Whereas, good means having the right qualities, a value which we can both meet common ground with.

Thus, our argument that Social networking brings more harm than good is indeed true to heart and should be accepted for the interest of the future generations. Now, in order to convince the house that Social networking brings more harm than good, we the government team will present 3 concrete arguments to strengthen our caseline.

For that purpose, let me introduce our roles as Then, my third minister will then rebut all the the ministers of the government. arguments given by the ministers of the opposition in order to further show us all that I, as the Prime Minister would offer the first the motion for today Social networking argument. brings more harm than good should indeed be accepted wholeheartedly. My second minister will then present another two arguments. She also will rebut the The second/third minister will then do the argument given by the first minister of the reply speech. opposition. Now, I, as the first minister of the government will present my argument why the motion is true. Identity theft is a huge problem in todays society and has come about as a result of the rapid expansion and availability of internet The first reason would be, social networking technology and the increase in personal data increases the ease of identity theft. This brings to light other privacy issues as well as found on social networking sites. lead to an overall decrease in our face-to-face social skills and confidence. Why do you think we say this?

Users share a variety of information about Sites such as MySpace, Facebook and Twitter facilitate identity theft in two mains ways. The first being is that sites encourage you to edit your profile includes adding your interests, full name, where you live, who your top friends are, email address and even personal details like your phone number and relationship status. themselves on their Facebook profiles, including photos, contact information, and tastes in movies and books. This information disclosure causes a huge problem as the more information you have on your profile the easier it is for identity thieves to verify themselves as being you.

Other issue is the privacy settings on these social networking sites also help facilitate personal fraud. Whilst there are built in features that allow users to change their privacy settings and not allow other users to view such personal details, these settings are never default, so that users are usually unaware how much information they are sharing not only with their friend, but with the rest of the world.

A general lack of awareness amongst users and the fact that digital identity can be easily hacked makes social networking sites a hub for identity theft which results in unwanted legal hassles, loss of money and years of trying to re-establish a victims credit and good name.

Tell us, or if others are too scared, tell me your reason for saying that social networking does not bring more harm than good. Tell me, I really want to hear it. Before I take leave, allow me to reaffirm that

SOCIAL NETWORKING BRINGS MORE HARM THAN GOOD

With all that is said, I bid leave with a thank you.

2nd Speaker Government

Good day to the honourable speaker, my (If the opposition has a definition almost similar to worthy members of the government team, you). the brave but misleading members of the opposition and members of the house. The opposition proposes a definition almost similar to us. So, it is clear that by social Lets look at our definition again. networking, we mean an online service that is based around the building and reflecting of social relations among individuals with common interest or social ties. This is the social networking that we say brings more harm than good. (If the opposition has a definition very different than you) It was clear that the opposition misheard our definition. We, as the government, said that the definition of social network in todays context is an online service that is based around the building and reflecting of social relations among individuals with common interest or social ties. That is what we meant by social networking. Please, ministers of the opposition. Please take notice of our definition of social networking. After seeing how weak the first argument Cyber bullying refers to bullying through given by the opposition, now I am going to information and communication technologies further strengthen the governments argument that Social networking brings mediums such as emails, mobile phone text more harm than good. messages, phone calls, internet chat rooms, The governments second argument why Social networking brings more harm than good is due to reason related to threat to cyber bullying. Whilst cyber bullying is not physical its emotional and psychological effects are devastating for the victim and can often lead to depression or worse maybe suicide. Social networking sites act as a platform where bullies can say things they might not usually say to someone in person, anonymity and less physical proximity act as a wall between the bully and the victim, none the less, the words or rumours that they are shared are still just as hurtful. Respected but misleading ministers instant messaging and most importantly and recently, SOCIAL NETWORKING websites such as MySpace, Facebook and Twitter. Bullies often feel more confident online and they can contact their victims anytime, anywhere, day or night, not just in the school yard. This means, bullies can attack almost 24-7! Imagine ministers of opposition...how would you feel being attacked continuously? Depression and stressful right? Without such platform that is social networking, bullies may have difficulty to attack their victims so often and indirectly depression would most likely drop. All the arguments given by the first minister of the opposition are all obviously an attempt to mislead us all. He/she said that _________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________ _________________________________ But, ladies and gentlemen, this is so not true.

of It is clear that social networking sites aid in the

opposition, Groups on Facebook can be created to make fun of or abuse particular people or ideas. For instance, people make negative comments on the photos which will make the person feel offended. This in itself is another form of cyber bullying that has been made possible via the increased use of social networking sites. Members of the opposition team, The governments third argument why Social networking brings more harm than good is due to reason related to workplace interference which affect productivity

prominence of cyber bulling which is just one of the negative impacts that social working sites has on society today. So, it is clear that SOCIAL NETWORKING BRINGS MORE HARM THAN GOOD.

Social networking sites can have a negative impact in the workplace, for both employers and employees. They create distraction, decrease productivity, cost companies money, can jeopardize a companys reputation and legal liability. If every employee in a 50-strong workforce spend 30 minutes on a social networking site every day, that would work out to a loss of 6,500 hours of productivity in one year!

Social networking sites can also be Job seekers may post their status ????? damaging for prospective employees looking for work, as Facebook and MySpace are fantastic resources for companies as they offer revealing information about a candidates true colours. Several profiles often contain awkward and embarrassing information that job seekers would not want their future managers to know about themselves.

Thank you. networking like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and the like do in fact cause more harm than good. 3rd Speaker Government Good morning/afternoon/day to the honourable speaker, my worthy members of the government team, the misleading members of the opposition and members of the house. I am standing here to uphold the motion that SOCIAL NETWORKING BRINGS MORE HARM THAN GOOD With the responsibility given to us, we are honoured to show to everyone here how misleading and deceptive the opposition is. The second minister of the opposition said that ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ . Do not believe their confusing arguments. We believe that ____________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________

______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ However, we totally disagree as we think that _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ We again cannot agree with him/her because ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________

We can quickly see what politicians and celebrities are doing when the reporters posts news pictures online, but people can also see what weve been doing. Some sites store information. Some ask us to fill in information which can be sold to other sites for commercial purposes. Once we post something online, it is almost impossible to erase it from the net. For example, if I break up with a person, my ex can take revenge and post embarrassing photos of me online. Yes, I can demand my ex to remove the privately taken photos from the sites, however there is no guarantee he would do that. There is no law that can protect my right to privacy in this area.
