Keynote Speaker: Petra Rethmann McMaster University 9:30 10:45 TEL 1005 Democracy, Otherwise: Alternativnost and Contemporary Russian Material Culture In examining the conditions and possibilities for democracy in contemporary Russia, I am especially interested in those artistic and political projects that usually fall away from more civil society and institutionbased approaches. In looking here at the various ways in which the Moscow/St. Petersburg artistic and political collective chto delat (what needs to be done) conceptualizes printed matter especially the newspaper and the pamphlet as a particular political (and comradely) agent, I explore the aesthetic and material properties of print to arrive at alternative democratic understandings.
