The 50th Anniversary of the RAS Showgirl Competition this year will benefit from the inclusion of three wonderful ambassadors from the western region. Kirralee Burke, winner of the 2011 Canowindra Showgirl crown, will go on to compete with Kate Warren from Dubbo and Katrina Westcott from Peak Hill, at Sydney in April. On Saturday night the Zone 6 Finals of the Showgirl event was a huge success for Zone 6 Coordinator Claudia Wythes; the Services Club; the Showgirl Committee; but most importantly the village of Canowindra. This year also marks the end of a long and enjoyable road for Penny Nash, one of the two 2011 Canowindra Showgirl Coordinators with Cheryl Wythes. In 1997 Penny took on the role and had her first Zone 6 Finalist that year with Sarah Cartwright. Other finalists have been Tracey Lamb, Andrea Davis, and now Kirralee. In 2001, the 40th anniversary of the competition, Claudia Wythes was successful in winning the coveted RAS Showgirl sash, which added a sense of personal achievement for Claudia in organising and celebrating the evening. The newly refurbished Canowindra Services Club Function Centre was unveiled for the first time since August 2010, when a fire caused extensive smoke damage to the inside of the hall. Grant Cummings, Manager of the Services Club was impressed at how the newly refurbished Function Centre operated, "After many months, and long, late nights, it was great to see that the effort was appreciated and admired. "We now have to focus on getting the rest of the Club finished, and hope to have it completed by ANZAC Day this year, weather permitting." Mr Cummings advises, "We can now take bookings for the Function Centre for community meetings and functions by calling 0427 441 921." The Canowindra Showgirl Committee would like to thank the staff of the Old Vic Inn for the hospitality shown to the girls during their stay, and throughout the rigorous interview schedule; Grant Cummings, and the Board of the Services Club for the hard work and diligence shown in preparing the venue for such a prestigious event. Congratulations Kirralee and good luck in Sydney on Saturday 14 April. The presentation ceremony begins at 1pm in the Sydney Showground Amphitheatre at Olympic Park, and everyone is welcome to be part of the Kirralee support group.

A long-term strategy and concept plan for a $1.7 million upgrade of Canowindra swimming pool has been endorsed by Cabonne Council. The first stage of the project, a $350,000 refurbishment of the pools amenities block has just been completed, and the Council will now prepare a design and construction brief for the next phase. This will involve converting the existing 33m pool to a 25m lap pool, revamping the childrens pool and building a new water play area. The upgrade will also include the provision of additional shade areas, a club room and storage area, solar heating, plant upgrade, repairs to the concrete concourse and new fencing and landscaping. Cabonne Mayor Bob Dowling said the design and construction brief would allow the Council to call for detailed designs and costings and enable it to explore funding options. The first stage of funding is expected to be included in Councils 2012/13 Budget. The Mayor said the long-term plan had been developed with the community through a consultation process that included two public meetings. After looking at two options for a 25 metre lap pool and a 50 metre, eight-lane pool, the community chose the first option, but requested changes to the location of the water play area, Cr Dowling said. Weve included those changes into the latest plan so that the water play area would be built at the western (entrance) end of the complex near the childrens pool. Cr Dowling said the 50-metre pool option would have meant additional ongoing costs of more than $100,000 a year. In developing the concept, the Council commissioned a structural engineers report on the existing pool, which showed it was well built and in sound condition. The examination included laboratory testing of concrete cores taken from the pools walls and floor. Any reported leaks can be attributed to external pipe work, the engineers report said. Canowindra residents have been invited to a free poolside barbecue to be hosted by local Councillors Anthony Durkin and Kevin Walker from 4pm on Saturday 3 March 2012 to mark the completion of the refurbished amenities block, with free entry after 3:30pm.

CABONNE VILLAGES TO RECEIVE BEAUTIFICATION Almost $154,000 worth of projects will be undertaken in 10 Cabonne villages under Cabonne Councils Village Enhancement Program. Improvements ranging from a new garden at Canowindra to decorative solar lighting in a Cumnock park were approved by the Council at its February meeting. Mayor Bob Dowling said the goal of the program was to beautify the main areas and entrances to villages through features such as landscaping, paving, street furniture, signage and tree planting. This is a fantastic initiative that allows the community to nominate the projects they believe will best enhance their villages, he said. Since the program was introduced in 2005-06, almost $730,000 worth of projects have been completed. Projects approved in the latest round were: Canowindra: Supply and install garden on corner of Gaskill and Blatchford Streets ($37,200). Cargo: Remove and replace existing picnic setting ($13,674); Install park benches in village green ($3520); Remove and replace garbage bin ($2,000). Cudal: New bins and notice board ($5,000). Cumnock: Solar decorative park lighting ($3,500). Eugowra: Concrete works at travellers rest area ($2,425); Bus shelter in Broad Street ($6,500); Remove bins and install five new bins throughout town ($10,000); Install two information boards ($1,560). Manildra: Seal car park off Kiewa Street ($3,000). Molong: Replace bollards and improve tree surrounds Bank Street ($25,000). Mullion Creek: Install information board ($780); Install three picnic tables ($11,046); Install park bench ($1760). Nashdale: Install two planter boxes in front of Nashdale Hall ($2,000); Landscaping at Nashdale Hall ($1,000). Yeoval: Supply 40 golden elm trees for avenues on the town approaches ($1600); Install seven seats in main street ($12,320); Remove bins and install five new bins in various locations ($10,000). A further 10 projects totalling almost $171,000 did not meet the criteria for VEP funding, but may be funded from other programs.

NEW EQUIPMENT FOR HOSPITAL Only a few weeks after being awarded Canowindra's Community Group of the Year in the Cabonne Council Australia Day honours list, the Canowindra Soldier's Memorial Hospital Auxiliary have donated two items to the Hospital for the use of patients this financial year. Firstly a Pressure Mattress to help elevate pressure points for patients who are confined to bed, the cost of this Mattress $2,225. The second item is a Commode Chair for physically impaired Patients; this chair helps the staff to handle patients with special needs in a more conducive and dignified manner, the cost of the Commode Chair $1,987, prior to the Auxiliary procuring these items, the Canowindra Hospital was required to hire this equipment to accommodate patients.

2 cups self raising flour 1 cup mashed Qld Blue pumpkin 55g butter 1 egg cup sugar cup milk tsp nutmeg Preheat over to 200oC. Beat butter and sugar until creamy, mix in pumpkin & egg. Add milk alternately with flour. Turn out onto a well floured board & knead until combined smoothly. Roll out dough and cut into circles, place onto a greased baking tray. Bake for 15 minutes.

CANOWINDRA CWA HALL REFURBISHMENT The first meeting of the Canowindra CWA Hall Refurbishment Committee took place at the beginning of February, and the group will meet regularly throughout the year. The last two years have been ones of significant change and growth within the CWA in Canowindra, and there are now about sixty members meeting in the evening on the fourth Thursday of the month. The Refurbishment Committee is working on the assumption that the Hall should be maintained and used by the CWA, but perhaps in different capacities than in the past, and that it is a useful building for the wider community to access. The Committee is working on a plan which aims to upgrade the Hall facilities according to its intended functions. It is recognized that significant community support will be required to achieve these upgrades over the next couple of years. The next meeting of the Refurbishment Committee is scheduled for mid March, check the Save the Date... column in The Phoenix for exact dates and times. People of all ages, sizes and abilities had a very informative and practical day, and another is being planned in the near future. Donna Ind and her team from Ruby Hill Equine Centre from Orange, were very patient and encouraging instructors, and the horses provided were very forgiving. SWIMMING CLUB The sun shone on Swimming Club on Friday a big change from the last two weeks. Butterfly Championships were swum and the Backstroke Championships from last week, were completed. Due to the two lots of championships the regular backstroke and butterfly events were cancelled. Improvers in the 33m Spoon were most dramatic in the Final where the first three swimmers went under their times. Marshall McKay smashed his time by 6 seconds just ahead of Josie Mitchell who swam 5 seconds faster than before. Taking home the spoon this week was Laura Flannery who took 2 seconds off her time to now have a PB of 32 seconds. The relay was won by lane five and apologies to the pennant winners as there is no name list. This week it is 200m freestyle championships so work on your endurance and be ready for roll call at 5:45pm. BOWLS REPORT New member Mick Holdsworth wins Major Singles final, defeating Arthur Robson in the final. Unfortunately no games could be played on Saturday. These games will now have to be played somehow in the near future, maybe midweek to keep the programme rolling. Triples, Minor and Major nominations are called for, and Consistency Singles. CANOWINDRA TO HOST WOODBRIDGE CUP GRAND FINAL

Canowindra will have the privilege of hosting the Woodbridge Cup Grand Final in September this year. After one of their most successful years in 2011 with all three sides making it into the 2011 grand final, this will be a great boost for the Club, and our town. With Gary Whatman at the reins yet again for the first Graders, and the return of Peter Pita and a few new recruits, the Tigers are beginning to look stronger than ever. Youth League 2011 coach Paul Earsman has stepped aside, but hasn't gone far, to welcome Tom Beer from Cowra. Tom has come to the Club with a few new players to help spice up the side, working together with Pauls long experience of the young boys we are all looking forward to seeing what they will have to offer. Once again Mick Vitnall is leading the League Tag girls. After last years Grand final win, the girls are of course still beaming with pride, and Mick as well. We have lost a few great players but after such a successful 2011, many have lined up to take their spots. When asked about the Woodbridge Cup Grand final being played at Canowindra in 2012, Woodbridge Cup President Andrew Pull spoke very enthusiastically about the opportunity. "This is great for the town of Canowindra not just the Rugby League Club. It will bring plenty of visitors to the town for the day, showcasing what a great place Canowindra is, as far as the Rugby League Club are concerned its a great reward for their efforts in assisting Woodbridge Cup in recent years. "Canowindra supply referees, linesman, judiciary members, FAO-trainers Coaches and managers for the Representative teams and contribute heavily to the organising and running of the competition. It shapes up as a bumper year with Eugowra, Manildra, Burrangong and Canowindra looking very strong in First Grade whilst in Youth League Condobolin could be the big movers, with most of their premiership winning under 16s moving into their team. League Tag is still a little unknown with the competition picking up two sides but their strengths unknown." Training is already in full swing for the Tigers and Tigresses, as their first games will be in late April with a few weeks of trials beforehand. Training is on Wednesday and Friday nights for the First Graders, Youth League and League Tag from 6.30pm at Tom Clyburn Oval. GO THE TIGERS!!!
