BIG BREAKFAST:The Middle Falls Fire Department will be hosting their monthly Big Breakfast on Sunday, March 4th, at the Firehouse on Rte. 29 in Middle Falls. The big red SAVE ( Salem Area Van Endeavor ) 10-passenger van has been part of the Salem scene for nearly two years and continues to provide valuable assistance to area residents. Under the management of the Courthouse Community Center, the van was generously donated to Salem by the Greenwich Interfaith Foundation in the spring of 2010. Thanks to the commitment of area churches, civic organizations and businesses, the necessary funds are raised to maintain the vehicle and keep the gas tank full. Each August, a golf tournament has been organized by the Salem Glens Falls National Bank manager, Rose Ann Savage, to provide support. The van gladly picks the riders up at home and transports them to the Greenwich Hannaford on Tuesday, the Cambridge IGA on Wednesday and the Granville Price Chopper on Thursday. There is no charge for this service which is open to anyone in need of transportation. SAVE has been fortunate to have the dedicated service of Ken White who not only assists as the dispatcher but drives the van as well. LaFlammes, Inc., cut the ribbon on its new location in Whitehall this weekend. The 7200-square-foot store, located at 192 Broadway (Route 4), was an Aubuchon Hardware store until it abruptly closed last summer. Since then, LaFlammes has beautifully renovated the building and filled it with top brand merchandise. The grand opening celebration began Friday, February 24 and continues through March 10. ELEANOR PRODUCTION:Suzanne Cohen is proud to announce she has a wonderful cast for the production of her original musical, Eleanor, based on the life of Eleanor Roosevelt! The show will be Friday, March 23rd at 8 PM, Saturday, March 24th at 8 PM, and Sunday, March 25th at 2 PM at Burton Hall in Easton. Our longest tenured president, Franklin D. Roosevelt, will be played by newcomer John (J.P.) Dartt, of Hoosic Falls. Suzanne Cohen will be the narrator of this story of our first activist first lady, portraying Eleanor in her later years. Some cast members will have multiple roles. Listing their primary characters, Erin Ouellette, of Cohoes, will play Lorena Hickok, Greenwichs Cassidy Percoco will portray Lucy Page Mercer, and Greenwichs Dave Moore will play President Theodore Roosevelt. We have a Greenwich father/daughter team of Kristen Cain playing Auntie Bye, and Rick Cain playing Elliott Roosevelt. Mihai Buretea, of Greenwich, will play John Roosevelt, and Daniel Tjarks, also of Greenwich, will portray the Sweat Shop Boy. Susan Frisbee as the Stage Manager of Eleanor. HISTORY COMES TO LIFE AT THE CCC During the month of March, the Salem Courthouse Community Center will be honoring those who fought in the Civil War with 3 lectures of interest. The Civil War commenced 151 years ago on April 12, 1861 when Confederate soldiers fired on Fort Sumter in South Carolina. In remembrance of this somber period in US history, there will be commemorative events and reenactments at all the major battlefields. At the CCC, lectures will be offered at 7:30 pm on Thursday, March 15, 22 and 29. On March 15, guest speaker Phil Jessen will offer An Evening with Abraham Lincoln. With over 16 years portraying our sixteenth president, Mr. Jessen will delight his audience with an informative and entertaining presentation. Michael Russert will return to the CCC on March 22 with a talk entitled To Remedy the Evils of the Present System: The New York State Militia Prepares for War. An author and knowledgeable speaker, Mr. Russert will address how effective the New York National Guard was as the militia was called to serve during the Civil War. The third lecture on March 29 will feature Salem Historian, William A. Cormier who will offer a compelling talk entitled Salem in the Civil War. A popular speaker at the CCC, Mr. Cormier will focus on the 123rd Regiment of New York State Volunteers which was raised in Salem in 1862. While there is no charge for the lectures, donations in support of the many programs offered at the CCC are greatly appreciated. The CCC is handicap accessible. HACA FREE TAX SERVICE OPENS The Hoosick Area Church Association (HACA), for the EIGHTH year, is offering free assistance to the public in preparing income tax returns through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance or VITA program. The VITA site will be located at the HACA Center at 26 John St., Hoosick Falls. The office will be open each Saturday from 10 to 3 PM. and on Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 PM. through February. In March and April, offices will be open on Saturdays from 10 to 1 PM., and on Thursdays by appointment. Office hours have been scheduled for evenings and weekends to accommodate people who find it difficult to take time off from work. The service is free and is provided by IRS Certified VITA/TCE Volunteer Preparers. To help accurately prepare their returns, taxpayers should bring the following: Photo identification Valid Social Security cards for the taxpayer, spouse and dependents Birth dates for primary, secondary and dependents on the tax return Current years tax package, if received Wage and earning statement(s) Form W-2, W2G, 1099-R, from all employers Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099) A copy of last years federal and state returns, if available Bank routing numbers and account numbers for direct deposit Other relevant information about income and expenses Total paid for day care Day care providers identifying number.Call Dianne at 686-5310 to make an appointment. Volunteer positions at the site such as reception, filing, photo copying, or hostess are also available. The VITA program offers free assistance to those with low-to-middle incomes (wage earners who make $50,000 or less) who file Form 1040EZ, Form 1040A, or a basic 1040 Federal tax return. Most returns for both Federal and State (including Vermont and Massachusetts) can be filed electronically and upon request, refunds can be deposited electronically into a checking or savings account.

Everyone enjoyed themselves. The celebration included bead necklaces, making Valentine cards for our sister church in El Salvador, and some crafts. Of course, the traditional King Cake had two babies in the cake, found by Shea Fortier and Serena Wilk. Next year we home more parishioner will join the celebration. The children enjoy having the adults our parish participating with them. The Catholic Daughters will be collecting scarves during the Lenten season for women in the Congo. We took this simple step to express our solidarity with the women living in the Cong and to help them reaffirm their dignity. Many have been victims of heinous violence and sexual abuse.
