Problem wk1-1

n.b Length CB is not normally given but can be found using pythagoras theroem,

D 6cm
D 6cm A 18cm 10cm C 10cm B 45cm

10c m

10cm B

45cm

18cm x

CX BX =CB

The diagram not drawn to scale, shows a prism of

length 45cm . ABCD is a trapezium with AB parallel to DC. Given: <BAD = 90 degrees, AB = 18cm, BC = 10cm, CD = 10cm and AD = 6cm; Calculate: (i) The Area in cm 2 of the cross section ABCD (ii) The Volume in cm3 (iii) The surface Area in cm 2

where and

CX = DA = 6cm BX = BA CD = 18 10 = 8 cm

therefore CB =

62 82

= 10cm

(i) Cross sectional area ABCD = (sum of parallel sides) x height = (18+10) x 6 = 84 cm 2 (ii) Volume : = cross sectional area x length
= 84 x 45 = 3,780 cm
3

(iii) Surface area ( the outer skin) This is the sum of the area of the six sides: Area of front trapezium face =84 cm 2 + Area of Back Trapezium face = 84 cm 2 + Area of rectangular Base = 18 x 45 = 810 cm 2 + Area of rectangular top = 10 x 45 = 450 cm 2 + Area of rectangular Back = 6 x 45 = 270 cm 2 + Area of rectangular wedge face = 10 x 45 = 450 cm 2 Surface Area = 84+84+810+450+270+450 = 2,148

Fig 2

Fig1 shows a cylindrical tank 1.5m in diameter an 6m long, partially filled with water and placed on a horizontal floor. Fig-2 shows the circular end of the tank. With chord AB showing the level of water in the tank, and <AOB = 120 degrees Calculate:
1. Length of arc ADB 2. Area of triangle OAB 3. cross sectional area of water in the tank 4. Inside surface area of tank in contact with the water 5. Vertical height of the water when measured from the horizontal floor 6. If more water is now added to the tank at a rate of 40 litres per min, how long will it take to fill the tank to 50% of capacity.

4.Area of tank in contact with water

A D B

= Curved surface area of water + 2 Times the shaded area

Curved surface area = length of arc (ADB) x tank length

= 2 x shaded area =

1.576 = 9.42 m

2 2

Solution:
0 Length of Arc ADB 120 = Circumference 2 r 3600

2 x 0.3455=0.61m

Total area of tank in contact with water is = 9.26 + 0.61=

ADB 120 = 2 r 3600

Arc Length ADB=2 0.75

x

From the figure above, we note that:

radius r = OX + DX where DX is the vertical height

Now considering triangle OXB :

cos 60 =
0

adjacent OX hypotenuse OB

( OB = radius r)

OX =

r cos 60

= 0.75 x 0.5 = 0.375m

therfore DX = 0.75 0.375 = 0.375m
