Management
Welcome to V1EWPOINT, the magazine from 1E all about Efcient IT. In
this issue we take a closer look at power management and what it can do for
your company.
Anyone can switch off a computer. The complex part is making sure
that the user can use it whenever they need to, that IT can patch it as needed,
that it remains healthy and that energy savings are reported accurately.
Productivity can be affected if users have to wait to boot up their
workstations when they come into work, or if updates and new software
have to be installed during working hours their computers may become
less responsive. If a nag screen tells them to restart their machine then it is
a distraction and time away from the work they should be focused on.
We have discovered that in many companies, users are unlikely to take
the personal responsibility to power down their computers anyway. After all,
they do not pay the corporate utility bills. Research shows that in the US,
,o% of employed adults who use a PC at work dont typically shut down
their PCs at the end of the work day, in Europe users are marginally better,
for example in the UK and Germany ,o% of employees always shut down
their machines.
Companies realize that energy costs rise year on year and so have
turned to the IT department to see what savings can be made. Many IT
executives believe it is easy to solve just by setting a power policy within the
systems administration center. But, to demonstrate credible savings without
impacting user productivity you need the
right tools. You do not just have to take
our word for it. We have interviewed
our customers and partners so you
can see the positive contributions
they have made through implement-
ing power management solutions and
what prompted them to do it.
We hope that you nd this magazine
stimulating, informative and of
assistance when considering your power
management strategies. Its an issue you
cant afford to ignore organizations
need to adapt by introducing new
processes that create the necessary
change in their approach to IT
Efciency.
Happy reading!

mproving the efciency of IT tops the list for enterprises as they go into
:oI:, according to independent research rm Forrester Research, Inc.:
While :oII started with a more robust IT spending environment, many
organizations began to pull back midyear, and :oI: plans are expected to
be more conservative given the high degree of uncertainty. [...] Efciency
and consolidation are top IT priorities.
Despite this, worldwide IT spending is set to reach $I.8 trillion in :oI:
(o.,% growth), so how should CIOs prepare for an efcient :oI:? The cost of
maintaining this huge amount of IT has grown over the past :o years to consume
around ,o percent of each years IT budget. CIOs want to reduce this gure either
to simply reduce costs or to have more resources for new projects that take the
business forward.
Added to the high cost of maintenance is the endemic energy waste that IT
generates which has become the norm across all industries and all types of
organizations. Traditionally, IT has not been responsible for paying utility bills and
therefore has not proactively invested in initiatives to reduce consumption. This has
to change as IT departments will become increasingly more accountable for the
energy consumed by IT equipment.
Furthermore, upgrades to an employees PC can squander vital work time and
cut into productivity. Also users may wait up to a week or more for software.
Forward thinking IT departments are starting to consider how initiatives can
actually increase end user productivity at the same time as efciency.
Softwareonyour side
1E has developed solutions that help to reduce the numbers of servers, network
bandwidth constraints, software licenses and energy consumption. Our
comprehensive range of IT Efciency solutions (see side panel) create better use of
resources and help you work efciently, productively and sustainably.
Whether its power management which will intelligently run your network and
power down PCs out of hours or when they are not use; server efciency which will
help you optimize the number of servers across the business; streamlined systems
management that cuts down the number of servers you need; or software asset
management where software licenses are managed more efciently, organizations
can save millions in energy, rationalize processes and cut their carbon footprint
substantially. Users become more productive, and IT departments are freed up
from repetitive tasks.
Now that the right tools are available this is a tremendous opportunity for
organizations to become IT efcient. For example, our power management
solutions have helped our customers save in excess of $,,om in energy costs alone,
cutting their CO2 emissions by ., million tons.
What are you waiting for?

COPin or COPout?
Global climate politics are incredibly complex. So, what
really happened during COP 17 in Durban last December?
Durban did achieve positive change. The goal of the summit was
to negotiate a new climate deal by 2015, to replace the Kyoto
protocol. Indeed, progress towards that goal was made.
The worlds biggest carbon emitters China, the United States,
the EU and India all agreed to negotiate legally binding
restrictions. The crucial issue was whether a new agreement on
protecting the climate should have full legal force. It was also
agreed that poorer countries would get a $100bn fund by 2020
to help develop frameworks for a green economy.
Whatever is agreed will be coming into force from 2020. Until
then we have the Kyoto agreement although Japan, Russia and
Canada stated that they would not take on further Kyoto targets.
All three are in the top ten emitters of Green House Gases.
So what do we need to do? Organizations must prepare for
climate change, because its unavoidable. Enterprise-class PC
power management solution NightWatchman Enterprise and
server power management solution NightWatchman Server Edition
are proven to help reduce carbon emissions and save money.

Why would you implement a dedicated PC power
management solution when theres a plethora of cheap
alternatives? Viewpoint examines the capabilities offered
by built-in and bundled Power Management solutions
comparing them to the more extensive features that
NightWatchman Enterprisegives organizations to
manage todays power-intensive IT systems. Sometimes
free things simply arent worth the cost.
>>>
W
hen selecting a PC power management
product there is lots of choice from
premium to cheap and even free.
There are a number of key capabilities
built into NightWatchman Enterprise from
1E that are absent from its cheaper cousins.
There is often an assumption that these
capabilities are simply icing on the cake. Indeed many organizations
regard their power management needs as being not like those other
companies out there and feel that they, just need whats good enough.
Here are ve key reasons why it is not quite so simple:
1
Demonstrate savingscredibly
A report showing savings is surely the goal of any power
management project, but it needs to be believable. One
method of calculating savings that is employed by many
of the less sophisticated solutions is to measure the current
consumption and compare it to what it would have been if all PCs had
previously been left on :x,. This is obviously inaccurate because it
claims credit for any power management that existed before the project
began such as diligent users turning off their own computers. For this
reason if you were to run this report prior to doing any power
management it would claim that it was already making savings! This
level of fallibility means that these reports are basically worthless for
reporting to the press, shareholders or for compliance with legislation.
Recommendation: Chose a power management solution that uses
multiple baselines, comparing an accurate measure of what you were
using with what you are using.
2
A cure for sleeplessness
Sleeplessness (also known as insomnia) is another issue that
a signicant majority of power management systems fail
to address. Sleeplessness is where the system fails to go into
standby or hibernate mode at the appropriate time because
a process on the system keeps it awake, which means power savings are
lost. Sometimes this is appropriate, like PowerPoint or Media Player
(where there are long periods of apparent user inactivity), but more
often than not it happens for no good reason Antivirus software and
in-house apps are a common cause of sleeplessness. Theres also the issue
of unexpected wakeups where a sleeping PC is woken prematurely due
to a slight movement of a mouse or general network activity. This failure
to be in low power mode when not in use can add up to serious money
(see page Io&I, for greater insight).
Recommendation: Ensure that your chosen power management
solution can detect problems that cause sleeplessness and critically
remediate them to ensure that maximum savings are achieved.

The NightWatchman Difference
1
NightWatchman Enterprise uses
multiple baselines to accurately measure
savings. A baseline is taken before any power
management is applied and compared to a
second baseline after a period of power
management. New baselines can even be
taken after changes such as hardware refresh
to be able to observe the effect on your usage.
2
NightWatchman Enterprise has a
Sleepless Client Detection feature that
allows your administrators to be shown
which processes are keeping systems awake
and selectively override them. This approach
uniquely preserves the ability for valid
processes such as media player to keep the
system awake, but will prevent the
inappropriate ones from wasting power.
3
NightWatchman Enterprise integrates
holistically with the patch management
cycle. The built in WakeUp technology will

3
Save users work
Sure, some vendors will promise you power management
without turning off PCs: Standby, hibernate etc. Sooner or
later though, youll have to reboot them; the IT department
needs to push out security updates and because machines
become unhealthy if they dont get a periodic reboot. Either your users
get prompted to reboot their computers during the day after the patch
has been deployed or ideally the PC gets rebooted overnight. Even Io
minutes of user down time for a reboot once per week adds up to big
dollars across a large organization. Furthermore if a user actually loses
unsaved work during a scheduled reboot then youve lost any nancial
saving that youd make on that PC across an entire year or more.
Recommendation: Your PC power management solution must
consider the reboot scenario (both from the IT department and end
user perspective) and ideally integrate with your patch management
technology.
4
Be accurate
When reporting on consumption or savings there are a
number of key metrics that you need to know. Two of the
most important are how much electricity your PCs use and
how much you pay for that electricity. Many solutions on the
market simply use averages for these values. The more advanced ones
may allow different averages for laptops and desktops, but this is still
woefully inaccurate. For instance a low energy PC can use as little as :,W
whereas a high performance workstation could be using over ,ooW. The
same is true for the cost of energy. For example, a location in the USA
might pay Io cents per kilowatt hour whereas in Canada the tariff could
be ,o cents. With such a massive difference does an average make sense?
V1EWPOINT ISSUE 01 09
VP
This is a massive problem if these reports need to be used for reporting
to demonstrate compliance with legislation or for corporate
sustainability objectives.
Recommendation: If your organization has more than one type of PC
or multiple locations, then a solution that allows multiple energy
tariffs and has an understanding of the energy consumption of
different makes and models is essential.
5
Dealing with the exceptions
An enterprise computing environment is a complex
landscape of differing hardware, applications and different
external requirements such as departmental working
patterns. The way that this is addressed by basic level power
management solutions is often to exclude systems with some exotic
requirement. For instance one might exclude any computers that are
in the nance team that have a specic app, because they need to run
overnight once per month. As the project rolls on more and more
machines that have some special circumstance are identied and
excluded, seriously impacting the results of the project.
Recommendation: Consider the edge cases does the solution allow
you to power manage as many machines as possible? Is it capable of
dealing with all of these special user groups?
It might appear at rst glance that your free power management may
be good enough. In reality, the lack of critical capability will only give
you, at best, some power savings on some of your systems some of the
time. You will never know your true situation as the reporting is so
optimistically inaccurate. So, your choice is do power management
properly or not at all if you dont, itll cost you more in the long run.
wake systems overnight to allow patches to be
deployed, and automatically save any open
user documents prior to the system reboot
that is required to complete the update
process. This unique capability solves one of
the big frustrations of the modern workplace
the dreaded reboot nag screen which not
only annoys users but impacts productivity.
4
1E holds a central database of power
consumption data for thousands of PC
models built up over many years. This gives
unparalleled ability to accurately measure
energy consumption. This is complemented
with the capability to map different energy
tariffs to different locations so as to accurately
attach a nancial cost against consumption.
5
NightWatchman Enterprise has myriad
features designed to handle the scenarios
that might require a machine to be excluded
from power management: The solution can
be congured to back off if certain
applications are running for example and it
is fully scriptable to handle almost any
eventuality.

or energy providers, the cheapest way to make
energy is to avoid its generation. For companies,
especially in these straitened times where energy
price hikes seem an inevitable recurring event, a
way of controlling and even reducing costs is to
actively power manage their IT estates. Funding an
energy conservation project is a low-cost strategy to ensure that
the utility can still resource future energy generation.
For companies, apart from the obvious savings through
becoming more efcient, there are the green credentials that are
associated with energy saving and reducing carbon emissions
companies like to be seen doing their bit for the environment and
promote the fact they are green.
IT Programs
Data Center and IT energy use is growing faster than in any
other sector; this is partly due to the rapid uptake of data center
virtualization. Utility companies are driving transformation by
creating incentive programs where any organization in any sector

ENERGY REBATES SU KENT
Energy is like time, a valuable
resource that once consumed cant
be retrieved. Wasting energy is futile
yet avoidable and over the past few
years, governments, non-
governmental organizations and
utility companies have been working
to combat growing energy
consumption by helping people and
organizations save energy. As an
incentive, many utility providers,
especially in North America will
partially or fully fund the costs of
PC power management or a server
reduction program.

resources or to run their PC estate more efciently by deploying
an Efcient IT solution they shorten the payback on your energy
efciency investments and help improve your companys
bottom line.
The Types of Programs
There are different types of programs, ranging from simple to
complex. Each US state has specic energy needs and the rebate
program is exible so that each state can set the rebate amounts
to design the most appropriate program. For large power
management installations the most likely type of program is
known as a Calculated or Custom type. Generally used in the
commercial sector, they allow organizations to bring new projects
and approaches to the utility projects that the utility may not
be aware of at the outset.
Invariably there may be complicated calculations and
measurements for the savings to be veried. This can have a
knock-on effect that may delay receiving the rebate. Its useful to
look for an Efcient IT solution that has built-in tools which can
assist the calculation and expedite the process.
Engage your utility company early
It is advisable to engage your utility company early in the process as
all incentives must be approved by them before installation so it is
best to involve them from the outset. Working collaboratively with
the utility you will get guidance on efciency decisions and ensure
you know the available payment and how long the incentive
program will last (beware: some programs may only be active for
I: months and even then, this may change due to the availability of
program funds).
If you have completed a project, or even just taken the
purchasing decision without their involvement you may nd it
harder to justify the need for their support and may not qualify
for funding. In general the incentives are there to assist the
funding of a project that would not happen without the nancial
reward, so it is important that the utility company feels that they
have driven you towards an energy saving program. Incentive
amounts are only nalized at the time of contract which may also
need to be signed by the utility before you purchase any energy
efciency solution or equipment.
Joyce Kinnear, manager of utility marketing services for the
City of Palo Alto says: Those companies that understand the
benets must ensure they engage with us early in their claim
process; if they dont, they might not qualify for a rebate.
Mary Medeiro McEnroe, the public benet program manager
for Silicon Valley Power agrees: Most programs require pre-
approval to ensure they qualify. The Californian Energy
Commission regulates the rebates programs for all the utilities in
the State and needs assurance that the rebates are only given to
new initiatives.
Probably the biggest challenge is the lack of time and staff at
companies to implement power management programs, Mary
says. Theres still a lot of opportunity for companies to apply but
generally a lack of internal resource to carry it out.
Explain the project in detail
The utility will be looking for information that will help them
understand the application of the technology, the efciencies that
will be made, and that it meets the specications they have laid out.
The utility will need to verify your savings before issuing your
rebate. You will need to describe your project in detail and provide
information about what the technology does and how it contributes
to saving energy in your organization, including performance
data of existing equipment and rigorous analysis of expected
energy savings.
Report accurately
You will need to create a credible energy savings estimate (also
known as an energy savings calculator) which shows the total kW
footprint, annual kWh usage and savings, and the expected cost of
operations and maintenance. It is essential that you understand the
utilitys ROI formula to make relevant projections on your energy
efciencies to calculate the monetary savings.
You can also work with the vendor to estimate the energy
savings and resulting energy rebate. Their project managers will
probably have prior experience in preparing a report and verifying
it before you submit it to the utility.
Funding an energy
conservation project
is a low-cost strategy

Sleeplessness occurs when a system fails to go to sleep
when it should. Suppose you have a PC that is set to
go to sleep after Io minutes of inactivity, however every
few minutes you move the mouse or press a button on
the keyboard. The system will never go to sleep because
your activity is keeping it awake it is sleepless.
The operating system uses an internal idle timer
to keep track of when the PC should sleep. This is constantly counting
down when the PC is idle and when it hits zero the computer should go
to sleep. When a user does anything with the computer however slight,
the value gets reset and the countdown begins again. This happens all
day long while the PC is in use.
Still wide awake
Windows has been engineered so that it will not enter a sleep state if
certain conditions are met, one of which is when CPU activity is above
a given threshold for example, if a busy web page keeps auto-refreshing
this will keep the system awake.
Applications or drivers can also request the system to stay awake.
They do this by setting an operating system ag called System Required.
Other applications may just be written incorrectly. For instance, the
system can still think that audio is playing even when all media apps
have closed.
These sleepless events mean PCs have applications or processes
running which keep them awake all of the time, in a constant sleepless
state.
Many IT maintenance tasks such as backup, virus scan or software
installations cause CPU spikes which in turn cause sleeplessness. In
general organizations prefer to perform systems management activity
overnight. However, if an organization does not have the ability to
remotely power on its PCs, they either have to leave PCs on overnight,
or perform IT maintenance tasks during the working day which
impacts users.
Detection of sleeplessness a must
As IT maintenance is a regular and unavoidable activity, it is important
that any PC power management solution integrate with systems
management solutions and have wake-on-LAN and sleepless client
detection and remediation as part of its feature set. Otherwise it ignores
massive potential savings for enterprises of all sizes. A theoretical ,,ooo-
seat organization could be wasting more than $o,ooo yearly solely by
ignoring sleeplessness. For larger organizations, this waste is even more
signicant. Why wait?

NightWatchman Enterprise
was its PC power management
solution of choice and the
steps he took in selecting it.
What was the driver for you to implement PC power
management at Arup?
We are an engineering company that has a growing awareness of its carbon
footprint. We have an eye to be energy efcient and reduce our carbon
emissions and a drive to implement solutions and tools that would enable
us to achieve these goals.
Did you knowthe scale of the problem?
We had no clear visibility of the problem and conducted a study of how
many machines were left on at night and over weekends. From analyzing
the data we discovered that there were about :,ooo machines representing
about ,o-o% of all laptops and desktops across the companys ofces in
the UK, Middle East and Europe that were being left on overnight and at
weekends. We also did a small study to discover the true energy draw of
PCs compared to what was advertised on manufacturers websites and saw
a disconnect from reality.

WhyNightWatchman Enterprise?
After these two studies we started to look at PC
power management solutions. NightWatchman
Enterprise pressed all the right buttons. Night-
Watchman Enterprise is an intelligent solution
that identies the applications running and either
save the users work and cleanly close the
application or not shut down the machines if
theyre mission critical. The reporting was very
good as well, producing detailed information on
our energy usage.
We also had issues as we do a lot of software
deployments we use a lot of applications, in
particular heavy ones such as Autodesk,
AutoCAD, Revit, 3D Studio Max and security
updates come out very frequently. It was critical
that any tool we selected had to t in with the patching process.
Before we had NightWatchman Enterprise we used to deploy updates
and patches during the daytime which would affect end user productivity.
We would get constant complaints from staff about their machines
running slowly. It was near impossible to do some mass updates for
example transitioning to Acrobat Io meant that Acrobat , had to be shut
down. A key requirement was to avoid this.
I understand you implemented a pilot what did the
NightWatchman Enterprise baseline data show?
We chose to test NightWatchman Enterprise on our biggest UK division,
which has ooo users, over a four week period. Most critically, we didnt tell
the our users as we didnt want them to change their behavior. After four
weeks of monitoring energy consumption rates we enabled Night-
Watchman Enterprise for a further test period of four weeks and made it
visible in the system tray. We advised users that their
PCs would shut down at I,:oo but that they could
override this if necessary. This was key to gaining
acceptance buy-in from stakeholders.
Analyzing the data from the two four-week periods
demonstrated that on average a quarter of computers
were left on each weekday evening and :o% during
weekends. We were able to show that Night-
Watchman Enterprise gave us a ,o% saving on energy
consumption. On the back of this NightWatchman
Enterprise was bought for the European, UK and
Middle East ofces.
Howoften do you wake up your computer
estate for patches and upgrades?
As power users of NightWatchman Enterprise I reckon
we probably use it every night to implement patches
and upgrades. Once a month we wake up all 8,ooo
machines for regular security updates. Night-
Watchman Enterprise wakes them up at 3am, installs
the updates and powers them down again. Power
Management that integrates with our patching process
was key for us.
What other benets have you found by
deploying NightWatchman Enterprise?
Its given us more visibility on the benets of up-
grading our machines every three years both from a
processing point of view (which affects productivity)
and the energy consumption levels. As Night-
Watchman Enterprise can identify the exact make and
model of every computer it is installed on, we can get

FIRST AND FOREMOST, WE FOCUS ON THE CLIENT

BE TRANSPARENT TO THE END USER AND ACCOMMODATE

SECONDLY, WE EVALUATE THE IMPACT
ON IT MANAGEMENT PRACTICES. THE

exact data on how much energy (Watts) is consumed by each one and we
found interesting statistics on energy usage on machines depending on
how old they are. Machines that are four years old were consuming twice
as much as new ones which adds up to considerable amount over a large
estate like ours. Using NightWatchman Enterprise we now identify older
computers and target them for an upgrade.
What happens towork thats open at the time of shutdown?
We have a lot of complex software and some machines need to run :/,,
for example, when a rendering process is going on. Once thats nished it
is ne for it to continue to be regularly shut down using NightWatchman
Enterprise. Regarding the loss of work we have never had one complaint
that anyone has lost anything, so obviously the back-up feature works.
With NightWatchman Enterprise there are built-in VB Scripts which save
Word, Excel and PowerPoint les if they are open at shutdown. 1E
provides very good documentation around creating other scripts for other
applications such as Autodesk software, so if any document is open when
the machine goes into shutdown it is saved automatically.
And Client Health, has that been a useful feature?
Client Health is very good. We always estimated that about ,% of our
machines had a broken CongMgr client, or that there was some issue
with the admin share which had been deleted or the WMI wasnt working
correctly. Before, we never had a tool that would identify which machine
had the particular problem that had an affected CongMgr client that, in
turn, stopped deployments and security upgrades. NightWatchman
Enterprises built-in Client Health feature reports where the problems are
and we can either manually go and x them, or in certain instances,
NightWatchman Enterprise can deliver automated xes.
Howlong did it take to implement NightWatchman
Enterprise and howlong was the payback period?
NightWatchman Enterprise took only : hours to deploy and was ready
and working after one day. The solution is very intuitive and straight-
forward to implement and maintain. Our return on investment took just
I months. We have had fantastic feedback from our users and we have
since deployed NightWatchman Enterprise across other regions, in South
Africa and Australia and we have recently had interest from China to do
the same.

Organizations manage a plethora
of different devices across their
IT infrastructure servers, PCs,
laptops, mobile devices, printers
and so on.
These all consume energy, as do the
surrounding facilities such as lighting
and heating systems.
What has been frustrating is how
difcult it is to discover, measure, report
and control energy use across this
corporate infrastructure. Signicant cost
is being spent on disparate attempts to
measure and control energy use.
It seems each device speaks a
different language and to date there has
been no standardized way to collect data
from these devices. Cisco EnergyWise
addresses the challenges of managing
energy use across multiple device types.
It starts with the one thing all these
devices have in common they connect
to the network.
The Cisco EnergyWise API, available
in many Cisco network devices,
standardizes the reporting of energy use
enabling companies to make signicant
energy and additional efciency savings
across their entire estate.
For example, a :ok-employee
organization would be looking at savings
of $:.|o million a year. These savings
come from power managing the ofce
building, the IT equipment and the data
center. By managing IT Efciency
through rationalizing the number of
servers in the data center to only those
performing useful work, operational
savings of at least $|ook can be achieved.
Cisco EnergyWise solutions in
addition to solutions from 1E for round-
the-clock PC power management, and
saving server energy with no disruption
to the business will provides an ROI
within :i months. The solution
broadens the reach of energy and
efciency management across data
center and campus IT and increases its
depth across different layers of the
infrastructure (servers, networks,
network-powered devices etc.).
It applies intelligence directly to the
devices being managed, gives control to
users to ensure power management
doesnt disrupt their work and supports
legacy hardware and new technologies.
Working with Cisco and 1E together
means that power management
solutions can apply to a broad range of
devices.

Server Efciency
Are you contributing to the worlds $i.| billion of waste by
running unproductive servers?
22 V1EWPOINT ISSUE 01
Howenergysmart is
yourserverestate?
>>>
Probably the most fundamental pieces of equipment in your IT asset arsenal are servers.
But theyre also probably the most ignored and disregarded when it comes to looking at
whether they run efciently. Many Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM)
solutions concentrate on everything else in the facility but not on the humble server itself.
In this article Andy Hawkins looks at the potential savings you can make through
implementing server power management and efciency software.
W
ith virtualization and cloud
computing now buzzwords in every
enterprise, the idea that you could
actually decommission servers and
run your business processes on a small
server estate is attractive. A recent
survey shows that I,% of your servers
are not doing any useful work. With
the average cost of running a physical server for a year at $oo, and a
virtualized one at $Iooo, by introducing server power management
and efciency analysis you could switch off as many as one in six of
your servers which is an even more attractive proposition.
Qualifying the problem
All too often, as companies have grown, the size of their server farm
has increased to run the business. The problem is in not knowing if
all servers still add business value. There may be servers employed for
a project thats been shelved or for one thats delayed, but once put into
service server managers are loathe to switch them off, even temporarily.
Although you may invest in the most efcient servers available today it
may be of little consequence if you do not run them efciently. Research
shows that servers use about oo% of their maximum power while doing
nothing at all and most only ever use a fraction of their available
compute resources.
NightWatchman Server Edition, the server efciency solution, not
only provides insight into the performance of physical and virtual servers
but identies the level of useful activity on them. If there is no useful
activity, then your investment is giving you absolutely no return.
In this tougher, tighter economy with soaring energy costs and up-
ward ination rate all companies are having to become leaner and more
watchful of their budgets. This applies to all areas and IT is no exception.
As computers and servers are great consumers of energy, IT is
looking at how to reduce their energy draw without disrupting end users.
Leveraging existing assets and their power saving technologies to the full
extent will contribute a greater return on investment.
Server power management and efficiency analysis
If there are old servers (ve or more years) in your estate, you will be
likely to nd their components were designed to run at maximum
performance all of the
time. Much like some
new cars have
technologies to save
energy (such as engines
which stop as the driver
brings the car to a halt) you
will nd new servers are able to
adapt their performance to save energy
by running more slowly. Running software which is aware of when the
server is no longer working on business critical tasks (analogous to a
stopped car) means these technologies can be used to great effect.
This awareness can be used to identify servers which are never used
by the business. Maintaining a dynamic list of such assets is valuable as it
avoids unnecessary spend on new hardware. It often makes sense to keep
a small amount of spare capacity to hand, akin to having one or two
spare light bulbs. That said, aging servers are often of little use, even in
an emergency, so age of server is an important factor when making
repurposing or recycling decisions.
Virtualization has driven uptake of brand new servers and naturally
ushed out old servers, yet has introduced its own set of inefciencies.
There is concern over increasing virtual sprawl which is partly due to a
blithe approach to commissioning new servers. This leads to an increase
in the numbers of virtual servers which become an unmanaged liability
and additional cost to the enterprise.
Measureable savings, improved ROI
It is pointless running servers uselessly and wouldnt it be great to know
where your spare capacity resides? With instant visibility of power costs,
efciency and CO: emissions via the NightWatchman Server Edition
dashboard, you can make informed decisions about which servers to
switch off or recycle. This will help you avoid sprawl, and achieve
improved payback through efcient use of technology instead. After all,
you want all your assets to be working for you and running efciently.
You wouldnt expect to have I,% of your workforce doing nothing for
you every day so make the same demands on your IT estate.

It is important to understand what
your current power usage behavior
is and to capture this for comparison
later, once you have implemented power
management. It is best not to tell users you
are doing this as it is likely to change their
behavior and give you inaccurate data.
4
Understand what the business
objectives are, ensure these can be
measured and always work towards
these. It is easy to get encumbered with
technical or political issues that have little
impact on the overall possible savings. Focus
on achieving the business benets on the
majority of workstations across your entire
estate as soon as possible.
5
Keep it simple. Start with a single
power management policy (e.g. power
down at I,:oo, wake up at o,:oo) and
ask the business to justify any exceptions to
this. Even in the largest environments you
should be managing only three to ve different
policies, with one being complete exclusion
from power management to handle political or
technical minorities.
6
While reporting can be very granular,
maintaining groups for reporting
becomes more complex as granularity
increases. If the business only needs to see
consumption trends per region, there is little
point going to the effort of presenting data per
individual building.
7
Our experience has taught us that it
is useful to understand the differences
between putting a computer to sleep
compared with powering it off (see Good
Night pages Io-I,). Sleep gives a quicker
wake up time and eliminates the need to
save application data when powering down,
however some applications can misbehave
when resuming from sleep, especially if there
are open les on shared network drives.
Completely shutting down a computer every
night has the added benets of ensuring
regular reboots, which is essential for effective
patch management. This may require
management of open les as well as wake-on-
LAN to be enabled in the BIOS.
8
Download reports regularly
to monitor what is happening and
to identify trends. If reports show
anomalies, ask questions! Determine if there
has been a change in user behavior, policy
management or some other environmental
factor across the organization.
9
Ensure the health of the power
management infrastructure is regularly
monitored. For example, its important
that your SQL Transaction Log has enough
disk space otherwise you could discover
anomalies in reporting.
If you are embarking on a PC power manage-
ment project for your own organization, our
consultants would be very happy to discuss
your specic requirements and demonstrate
how our years of expertise will ensure you
are successful in meeting your goals.

Its true, but there are always devices that

be more efficient with power regardless of
the device, whether its a desktop, laptop,
thin client or a tablet. And its not just about
power. Availability management is a key

running properly meaning productivity is not
affected.
Andy Hawkins (NightWatchman Server
Edition) You will have invested in many
servers that are still working well and are
unlikely to replace them in one go. You will
still need to manage your existing estate and
identify which servers are useful, remove
those that are not and optimize whats left.
Youll be surprised at the savings you can
make, research shows that as many as one
in six servers are not doing anything useful.
Q
Has power management been rendered
irrelevant by server virtualization?
Andy Virtualization initiatives can bring
savings but its a one-time windfall. The
bigger picture is more about efficiency, and
saving power is only a part of that. Im
sceptical of most measures of virtualization
success as it is very easy to create many
virtualized servers and paint a success story,
but its only veneer thin. The use of
virtualization has to be controlled and our
software helps achieve that. We see
organizations spending thousands on
virtualization and it gets painful quickly when
it sprawls out of control.
Q
With the rise of cloud, will power
management be relevant to enterprises?
Richard There are inherent costs associated
with the cloud. Efficiencies have been over-
looked as users still have to access cloud
services through an end point power
management ensures these will not consume
power when they are not being used.
Andy If you are talking about private cloud,
then power management is absolutely still
relevant as the IT assets remain within the
data center. But power is only one measure
of usage, traditionally a popular one as it is
tangible. Cloud and virtualization mess with
that. Now we find power hungry servers
hosting applications which belong to multiple
business units. That breaks existing charge-
back models. Reporting which understands
virtualization and cloud is going to be key to
repairing internal chargeback processes.
Public cloud is a different matter. You feel
youve passed the cost of power onto
someone else, but in reality you still pay
just indirectly through rental fees.
Occasionally power is used as a differentiator,
and this may appeal to sustainability
initiatives but at the end of the day it comes
down to cost and service.
Q
What if I am looking at VDI or adopting
thin clients in my environment?
Richard I have seen VDI being used most
often where companies have merged and
want to provide access to services across the
two merged entities. This works really well,
however it is far from ubiquitous. In the
nearer term there will be more App-V and
XenApp adoption than full VDI deployments.
You may adapt some portion of your estate,
but for the foreseeable future there will
always be traditional devices out there. And
by the time you have started virtualizing in
earnest, youll have already got ROI on the
project. Besides isn't this just moving the
problem to the data center? Power
management is by no means redundant.
Andy But have you got your ROI? You are
moving costs to the data center for sure,
and you need to have control over that. So it
becomes vital to monitor the useful activity
on servers and relate that to operating costs,
including energy of course.
