CLIQUE

Clique A clique is an exclusive circle of people joined together by a common purpose, such as the one illustrated, a team assigned for a specific project, the mafia, or a group of interns. Clique is derived from French, in the 17th century. What though he did not belong to your clique! Though you may not approve of his method or his principles, recognize his magnanimity. Is a famous quote by Henry David Thoreau. Clique has the following dictionary definitions: 1. A small, exclusive group of people 2. A narrow circle of friends Master tips for Clique Pronounced as click, clique is clicking a group of a few cli(IQ)ue people, or selecting a group of limited people with high IQs. Thats a way to etch the word across your mind forever. Usage examples of Clique: 1. The girls in that clique are very popular, but are also very mean. Synonyms 1. COG

Cog Cog, as shown in the picture, means a series of teeth in a gear that drives it forward. Left by itself. The single teeth is not of much value when compiled in gear form, every cog becomes important. It is from this reference that cog derives its meaning: A subordinate member of an organization who performs necessary but usually minor or routine functions. Cog carries the following dictionary definitions: 1. One of a series of teeth, as on the rim of a wheel or gear, whose engagement transmits successive motive force to a corresponding wheel or gear. 2. A cogwheel. 3. A subordinate member of an organization who performs necessary but usually minor or routine functions. Idioms based on cog: There are a couple of interesting idioms based on the word cog: 1. Slip a cog: To make a blunder; err One of the waiters must have slipped a cog. 2. A cog in the wheel/machine: one part of a large system or organization. CUBBYHOLE

Cubbyhole No, cubbyhole is not slang for a fat persons belly button, but actually implies a small cozy snug little place. Harry potter fans would recall the Owl dormitory to be filled with small places allotted for the pets, which are called cubbyholes. As the picture displays, a small, often private space, such as a pigeonhole is referred to as a cubbyhole. Should not be used as a defaming cuss for fat people! The dictionary definitions for Cubbyhole are as follows: 1. A small enclosed space or room. (noun) 2. Any small compartment, such as a pigeonhole (noun) Masters tips for Cubbyhole: To remember this word, break it into two easy words: Cubby: or crumby, meaning a small pathetic and breaking down state, Hole: A small opening or passage. Thus cubbyhole is a crumby, little space. Do not confuse cubby as chubby, as chubby would refer to something fat or large, an antonym of the cubbyhole. Usage examples for Cubbyhole: 1. DECLIVITY

Declivity The antonym of acclivity, declivity refers to the slope downwards, which can be rather smooth and fast. As illustrated, cycling uphill can be an excruciatingly painful task, while declivity is a very easy affair as gravity works with you. Make sure you dont see declivity on your progress charts! Declivity has the following dictionary definitions: 1. A downward slope, as of a hill. Master tips for declivity Memorize declivity as the decline of activity. Use examples of declivity: 1. Cheating on your homework can start you on a slippery declivity to cheating in life. 2. The caves are located in the declivities of the mountain's north face. Synonyms 1. Downslope, declination. DRUID

Druid A druid is a member of a pre-Christian priests cult in ancient Britain, France and Wales. In modern day pop culture, druids are portrayed as mystical creatures with magical abilities. Cloaked in white silk garments and flowing beards, druids raised several attempts in the ancient era to continue dominancy of their radically conservative views. In modern day period, there have been several attempts to revive the cult. Druid has the following definitions: 1. A member of an order of priests in ancient Gaul and Britain who appear in Welsh and Irish legend as prophets and sorcerers. 2. A member of any of several modern movements attempting to revive druidism Usage of druid: 1. Druid priests made human sacrifices to appease their gods. 2. When Caesar came to Britain he wrote about local druids. Synonyms: Non-Christian priest, priest - a person who performs religious duties and ceremonies in a non-Christian religion

EXPUNGE

Expunge Expunge means removing or erasing, as illustrated often a chalkboard or a whiteboard. Recall high school days when the teacher would allot turns for students to expunge the classs notes off the chalkboard. Expunge has the following definitions: 1. To erase or strike out. 2. To eliminate completely 3. To wipe out or destroy Master tips for expunge: Expunge sounds a lot like ex-sponge, since a sponge wipes clean and erases dirt, expunge is nearly the same meaning. Merely pronouncing the word is enough to remind you of its meaning. Usage of expunge: 1. I have corrected some factual slips, expunged some repetitions. 2. HAVEN

Haven A haven is a place or a form of shelter where protection and safety is taken care of. As candidly quoted here, going by the recent events, nobody has a safe haven in Pakistan, not even Osama Bin Laden. Do not confuse haven with tavern: even though they both may offer a safe place from reality at the end of the day! Dictionary carries the following definitions of Haven: 1. A harbour or port. 2. Any place of shelter and safety such as a refuge or asylum. Master tips for haven: Haven is sounds and is spelled a lot like heaven, a beautiful place where there is no fear and one is under complete safety and protection. Alternatively you can also remember the word by rhyming it with tavern, which is after a tiresome day or stressed out work : a safe place to relax. Usage examples for Haven: 1. Mexico is a haven for drug mafia. 2. Swiss banks are the easiest haven for corrupt politicians. Synonyms: Oasis, shelter: a structure that provides privacy and protection from danger.
