CCD - St. Josephs Table is a religious custom and tradition that started centuries ago in Sicily. When Sicilians were affected by a severe drought, they turned to St. Joseph the Father of Jesus and head of the Holy Family to rescue them by asking St. Joseph to intercede before God for their cause. As a result of their prayer and intercession of St. Joseph, an abundance of rain was poured over the fields to save their crops. We continue this tradition today by collecting food items for St. Johns Parish families in need and St. Vincents food pantry. Items for this tradition of St. Josephs Table will be collected during CCD on March 7th and March 14th. Volunteers are needed to make rosaries for the missions. Our Ladys Rosary Makers is a national organization providing simple to make handmade rosaries to missionaries world-wide, who are requesting rosaries. For more information please contact Rose at 715-650-7222.

FROM THE PASTORS DESK

Praised be Jesus Christ! The movie The Passion of the Christ came out in 2004 and I went to see it first on my own, and later with the entire high school. I remember sitting next to one of the high school teachers and he very generously offered me some of his popcorn (he was also fully equipped with a big gulp soda in the other hand). Of course, having seen the movie previously, I was not at all surprised that only ten minutes into the film he had already given up on his popcorn and soda. As those of you who have seen the movie already know, its hard to have an appetite while witnessing the brutality to which Jesus was subjected over and over again. I think the most common reaction after viewing the film was I had no idea Jesus went through all of that. And while the raw violence pushed most of us to what was almost unbearable, the eyes of faith began to see the extraordinary forgiveness and love of Our Lord. I suspect that the people who were least shocked by what they witnessed in the movie were those who have frequently meditated on the Stations of the Cross. For centuries Christians have followed Jesus on His via dolorosa so as to gain a greater glimpse of His determination to save us from sin and death. My parents took us to pray the Stations of the Cross every Wednesday and Friday during Lent and I still have the worship aid that we used. Praying Christs 14 Stations of the Cross has always been a source of consolation as we find the trials in our own lives to be sometimes overwhelming. When we witness the heroic courage of Our Lord as He gets up after each painful fall, something in our hearts is healed and strengthened for the road that lies ahead. And for those of us who fall into the periodic trap of thinking that we are victims, witnessing the only true Victim that ever lived and His refusal to blame anyone for His suffering gives us hope that someday well learn to accept suffering as a means to grow closer to God. Especially for those who suffer most in this world and seemingly carry the heaviest crosses, walking with Jesus on His royal road of suffering provides both perseverance and hope. Given the many trials of our times, a devotion to Jesus Way of the Cross can keep us from wasting the suffering that comes our way. As a spiritual writer once put it, Lord, if you wont take this cross away, then make it a way to You. I hope youll join us in praying the Stations of the Cross every Friday during Lent (5:15 p.m. at St. Johns and 5:30 p.m. at Christ the King). May God bless you and your family! Your friend in Christ, Father Martin St. John Catholic Book Club will meet on March 27th, 2012.
