Spring is near! March is a month of possibility.

While Wisconsin winters have a way of putting some of us in a bit of a funk, this time of year awakens us to the renewal ahead. The outdoor walkers emerge once again. The tulips and daffodils begin to take a peak at the world. The evenings have more sunlight to keep us on our toes a bit longer. And, if resolutions are not for you, this may be the month you get motivated to take better care of yourself. It just so happens that March is National Nutrition Month; a good time for us to evaluate our eating habits. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics created the nutrition education and information campaign in order to focus attention on the quality of food we are putting in our bodies along with the quantity of exercise we are taking in each week. Lets all take this opportunity to better ourselves! There are a number of Web sites to help you on your wellness journey. Having three teenagers who thrive on technology, I can hold my own, well, on the computer anyway. When I finally get my turn, I enjoy visiting BeWellCooking.com. It is here where I am reminded what a huge responsibility parents have in teaching our children about healthy eating habits. Their nutrition impacts the development of their minds and bodies. As a parent, you can help pave the way for a lifetime of better moods and better health by helping them develop an appreciation for planning, preparing and eating a range of tastes. Ive also learned from experience that the earlier you start, the better. At my house, youre just not going to slip a healthy beet past the tightly clenched teeth of my 16-yearold, 175-pound, muscle-bound son wielding a menacing fork! In his case, I concede that I probably started too late. Our authors this month are especially excited to have the chance to educate you with their health and wellness expertise. Tina Lupiezowiec shares her view on sewing the seeds of change for those trying to make sustainable choices. Mary Hess has exciting news about promising government studies that recognize the benefit in plant-based remedies for infection very exciting for those looking for more natural ways of living. Jon

Bednarski reminds us how rewarding giving and sharing can be, both emotionally and financially. And so many more great articles await you in this edition. Please read on! I hope you are able to use some of what we offer this month to better your health and wellness the possibilities are endless! In health and happiness,

do you have a comment or question about something you read in nature's Pathways? is there a story you'd like to read? how about something you didn't like as much? Whatever your opinion, we want to know! Please e-mail Jackie at jpeters@naturespathways.us or info@naturespathways.us. Thanks for reading!

Dog treat disasters .............................................

o, Im walking down the aisles of a local big box department store and pass the pet food. Of course, since everything in my shop is all natural, without any chemicals, artificial color or preservatives, I just have to take a peek at the items on the shelf. I already know that all the dog and cat foods are using meat-by-product as their main meat source, which is basically downed, sick and dying cows, euthanized animals from vet clinics and of course can be road kill, not to mention the leftover meats and Styrofoam containers that go to the rendering plant from the grocery stores. I already know this much, including the fact that they are filled with corn, wheat and soy, which are huge offenders for dog allergies and are filled with chemicals to preserve them. Yes, I already know that, but now is the time to check out the bags of treats. Oh my goodness, how can they sell things like this? I wont name names, but please check your bags of treats at home. One is a bag with soft and chewy red colored things that smell like bacon. Here are a few things to look out for: ground corn and corn gluten. Did you know that all those dogs that died three years ago were eating food and treats that had gluten in them? And, most gluten doesnt come from the USA. Next, I see wheat flour, ground yellow corn, water, sugar, glycerin, soybeans and bacon preserved with sodium nitrite. Again, more chemicals. Please remember that dogs really are meat eaters. Not too many dogs are running through fields eating all the corn and wheat they can find. When you see grains in food and treats, its just filler. And, do we really want to be feeding our dogs sugar? Did

you notice where in the list the meat actually was? Like number nine. Your heaviest ingredients are in the first five listed. So, Wheres the Beef? Oh, I forgot to say that the bacon is also preserved with BHA. Last time I checked that can cause kidney and liver damage. OK, were getting close to the end of this bag. Red #40, yellow #6 and blue #1. These colors can be cancer causing agents. Do they really have to color it so it looks pretty for us? My dog cant see color. Would he really eat it if it wasnt bright red? Lets just throw that bag right back on the shelf! Heres another favorite, treats shaped like little T-bone steaks. You know which ones I mean. Mainly the same ingredients, except I find a few extra offenders. Natural porterhouse steak flavor? What the heck is that? Think about it. If it were natural they wouldnt have to add it. One of my favorite worst ingredients is in the little sticks that look like sausage links. Its called Propylene Glycol. Did you know thats in anti-freeze? Yes, anti-freeze! It is a carrier that makes things moist and pliable. Oh yah, onion extract is also in this one. Werent we all told by our vet to never give onion to a dog? Bottom line is that these companies arent in the business of caring about your animals health. Their only concern is the almighty dollar. Please learn to recognize ingredients. If in doubt you can always Google an ingredient or the side effects of an ingredient. Some of these ingredients may cause seizures if you have an animal prone to that. Buy treats that are whole meats, pretty much corn-, wheat- and soy-free, and preserved with vitamin C (ascorbic acid), mixed tocopherols (vitamin E) and rosemary. Now you can freak out and clean out your cupboard. Get rid of all the chemical treats and start over. Happy hunting! u.s. Dept. of Agriculture recognizes benefit in plant-based remedies as plausible treatment for infections .................................................................
by mary hess, dVm, caT
t comes as no surprise that through government testing we have found proof that a simple oil such as citrus can have antibacterial properties. Through trial testing on animals, they have found that such oils have the ability to kill common bacteria such as Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas, E. coli and others. Using large animals for their studies, they have found and were amazed by the results of lowered morbidity due to the use of citrus, specifically orange peels. The orange peels were nontoxic yet very effective in eliminating antimicrobials. Finding alternative ways to kill bacteria is very important due to the rise of antibiotic resistance, as well as for eliminating use of antibiotics in food animals, such as dairy cows. All of this is exciting news for a community seeking more natural ways of living. With this recent find, it may be possible that the government would investigate other natural routes of healing. This is not only important because in general, healing things naturally is more favorable to animal and human health, but also because with more studies funded by the government,

The orange peels were nontoxic yet very effective in eliminating antimicrobials.

natural products may become more regulated. This means that the properties that are put into supplements will be more carefully monitored. While there are some very good and reputable supplement and essential oil companies available, there are just as many companies who use additives and extenders in oils and supplements. These additives and extenders can have just as harmful side effects as some of the more conventional medicines. Having some regulations on supplements and essential oils may have its downfalls, but in general, should raise standard of care. The possibility of future research to further our knowledge on natural medicines and their benefit should be something we all look forward to. It appears as though the government is taking steps to finally give supplements and other naturopathic remedies the recognition they deserve.

expert answers to your health and wellness questions

boxed foods, winter health and getting cardio without the treadmill ......................................................................
by Karmen nenahlo

Question: Im not a particularly great cook, and I seem to eat a lot of boxed foods. Is this a problem if health is one of my primary goals? Answer: It really depends on the specific foods youre eating, but its definitely advantageous to eat as many fresh fruits and vegetables and all-natural whole grains as possible, not to mention fresh meats and seafood. That said, convenience, price and several other factors most likely play into your food choices as well, so choosing the best foods 100% of the time may not be all that practical. My advice to you would be to move in the direction of fresh foods as much as you can, given your particular lifestyle. And remember, you dont have to be a great cook to reap the health benefits of nutrient-dense foods. They may taste better if you know how to properly prepare them, but its pretty easy to throw together some chicken or fish with a cooked whole grain and some veggies for a quick and easy (and healthy) dinner. I would also recommend taking a basic cooking class so you can learn a new skill one that will continue to pay health dividends moving forward. Question: I hate getting sick. Can you provide some tips and hints to keep me healthy throughout the winter months? Answer: Im with you being sick sucks! Luckily, there are a couple tried and true habits that will help you avoid the latest bug. First of all, wash your hands frequently, and by all means, avoid touching your face (especially your eyes, nose and mouth). Drink plenty of fluids, get plenty of sleep (people forget how important this is to a healthy immune system) and get a flu shot as well. It goes without saying that a healthful diet is ideal, but I would also recommend a good quality multivitamin/mineral supplement too, since most people struggle to eat a balanced and varied diet on a daily basis. But to me, the most effective way to avoid illness is

to stay away from people that are already sick. This can certainly be a challenge, especially if you have kids, but do your best. Put these tips to good use, and you should be able to skirt through the winter with nothing more than the occasional head cold, if that! Question: Im big into weightlifting, but Im not a huge fan of cardio. Is there a way for me to enhance heart health without hopping on one of the traditional pieces of cardio equipment for 45 minutes at the gym? Answer: Yes absolutely! Cardio doesnt necessarily mean you have to get on the bike, treadmill or elliptical. You simply need to get your heart rate up and that can be accomplished during your weight training sessions. Doing compound sets or supersets, or intense circuits with very little rest, will definitely get your heart rate kicking, and these provide the fitness and health benefits youre looking for. You can get active in plenty of other ways too, without feeling like a hamster on a wheel. Try playing one of your favorite sports or go hiking in a nearby park. Even tubing or sledding in the wintertime can provide a good cardiovascular workout. Just think outside the box a little and keep the focus on fun!

A monthly advice column for your energy system ................................................

Everything in the universe contains energy, yet energy is something many of us dont understand. Every month Tina Bensman, a practicing clairvoyant and energy healer, is here to answer any questions you have about your energy system. Topics may include energy anatomy, dream analysis, chakra balancing, manifestation, life patterns, etc. The ideas written here do not replace medical attention. Always listen to your body, mind and intuition when receiving advice of any kind. Dear Tina, I know that I am intuitive. I can feel my heart telling me what is right or wrong for me to do; however, I cant see anything visually. Is it possible to learn how to receive intuition through sight or do you have to be born with that ability? Eyes But Cant See Dear Eyes But Cant See, Yes, you are intuitive. What you are describing is an innate heart chakra gift within your spirit and, therefore, body. Heart gifts not only alert you with a change in heartbeat, a swelling in your chest or a change in breathing, it also allows you to heal through your heart and hands. This is a powerful gift that can sometimes be difficult to control. It may sometimes feel like you have to help someone or that you are responsible for fixing other peoples problems. If you feel that way, some boundaries are in order! To answer your question, yes you can learn any intuitive gift you are interested in; however, your naturally born gifts will come more naturally. Why do you want to learn to be clairvoyant (a person that can see energy intuitively)? Clairvoyance gets the most play in media and sometimes people feel like that is the only real
10
Natures Pathways | March 2012

way to intuit answers to lifes questions. This is not the case. Your heart intuition works just as strong ... if not stronger! If you simply want to strengthen the ability to see energy to become more versatile, then here are a few 6th chakra strengtheners you can try: Imagine an apple in your mind. Did you do it? If so, then you have the capability to work with your minds eye intuitively. The difference with intuition is that you allow the images to come to you rather than deciding what they will be first. Imagine yourself in a safe, natural setting. What is there? Explore. What do you see, hear, smell, taste and feel? Ask yourself, What color will help me with ____________ (some issue youre facing)? What color came to you? Now surround yourself with that color and go about your day. Pay attention to your dreams. Write them down and even imagine what would happen next after you wake up. Any activity that allows you to play with your imagination and build trust will also help develop your visual intuition. Good luck and have fun!
Tina, a Madison Intuitive Counselor and Energy Healer, is a lifelong student of the paranormal. She had her first clairvoyant vision at a young age and continues to see and hear energy. Tina is trained in clairvoyant reading and many modalities of energy healing, but through professional training she was disappointed in the methods many schools used to devalue everyones natural gifts. Tina started The Chakra House to teach how natural and easy it is to work with energy. She believes that everyone has natural psychic gifts and can access their abilities if they realized their potential.

fitness for every body ......................................................

by J. orkowski
outh obesity has become the epidemic of note throughout society. Countless governmental bodies, independent organizations and mainstream media outlets are constantly revealing statistics and projections related to this problem. According to several sources, the youth overweight/obesity numbers exceed 30 percent of people under the age of 18 in the United States and are

expected to rise toward the 50 percent mark by the end of 2012. What we need is an action plan that will help kids and families rid themselves of the burden that has virtually crippled our youngest generation and even led to a vernacular shift in medical terminology. For example, type 2 diabetes used to be referred to as adult onset until it became a common illness diagnosed in

12

www.naturespathwaysonline.com

thousands of children due to their overweight concerns. Maybe more importantly, however, we must peel back the layers and ascertain what the true cause for concern is with this topic. Is obesity really the problem, or is it the symptom of a greater matter? The obesity factor is nothing more than a bodily response to an inappropriate lifestyle devoid of activity. Obesity is not the problem inactivity is. And while this perspective change may seem insignificant, I can assure you that in order to truly find success when working with a client, your No. 1 goal must be to find the root of the problem. Moreover, contemporary youth fitness programs are widely considered unsuccessful because of their lack of attention toward the actual problem and creating its corresponding solution. By not addressing the mental, emotional and lifestyle realities that brought our clients to this place to begin with, we are almost guaranteeing that they will fall off the wagon and eventually revert back to the lifestyle actions that brought us to them in the first place. This is a tragic revolving door scenario with adults. It is virtual child abuse with kids. Kids are too inactive on a daily basis. Increase daily activity and you will have solved the problem from its core in one fell swoop. In order to make that happen, you must create daily fitness activities that are both developmentally sound and fun for kids. Fun and developmentally sound are operative points in this equation. Children are not little adults, and the exercise requirements they have are vastly different than those of grownups. I continue to rally against sending children to adult health clubs thinking that they will receive what they need. I encourage parents to go there themselves, but allow people with advanced knowledge of child development to work with the children.

You must create daily fitness activities that are both developmentally sound and fun for kids.

Additionally, the fun factor is something that we simply must embrace. Children are not nave nor are they mentally incapable of understanding what it is they enjoy. When kids have fun, they want to do it again and again. It cant get more basic than that. This is the core concept of our Every Body Fitness program. Getting kids to have a funout as opposed to a work out and getting kids to play fitness. There are so many very talented and athletic kids that frequent our gymnastics gym and we start to take them for granted. We start to believe that these kids probably represent the average child and nothing is further from the truth. There are many children out there who have no activity. In fact I met a child a while ago who wasnt sure how to run because she had never done it. We have the children with talent, the true athletes, the children who will, without a doubt, grow up to be fit adults. But I saw that we were not reaching those children who need us most. I wanted to have a program for kids who might be intimidated by moving or getting fit. What we created is a nationally recognized program that addresses challenged children, athletes and all children in between. I spoke to a mom today about registering her football/ soccer son for fitness again because it kicked his butt. Gymfinitys Every Body Fitness has the ability to challenge individuals at their own level and act in a way that can change the world, one child at a time.

J. Orkowski (owner, program director, team coach): J. has enjoyed international competition as a gymnast and has coached around the country in various gyms, camps and programs since 1980. Often a featured presenter at gymnastics seminars, J. opened Gymfinity in 1999. He is the safety educator of Wisconsin for USA Gymnastics, sits on the board for Gold Medal Standard Clubs of Character Education and is on the Wisconsin State Board for USA Gymnastics. He is the vice president of the Wisconsin Gymnastics Club Owners Association and the proud dad of his BEST 2 projects; Owen (2004) and Emmett (2008).

secrets to a long and happy marriage ..........................................

ome might say a long celebrity marriage is one that endures the duration of the newly betrotheds trip down the aisle. Weve seen Britney Spears dissolve a marriage after 55 hours and Kim Kardashian call it quits after 72 days. It seems even money cant buy matrimonial happiness. But some couples have been together for 50, 60 years and say theyre still as much in love as they were the day they spoke their I dos. What do they know that others do not? According to clinical psychologist and relationship guru Dr. Phil McGraw, We all need to be flexible and to compromise in marriage, but youve got to be true to your core traits and characteristics, what I call your authentic self. Some couples enter a relationship projecting a persona they believe the other person wants one that really isnt what theyre all about. This could be a woman trying to fill the role of her husbands nurturing mom or a guy playing the protector to his wife. In reality, marriage is more of a partnership, and truth and trust are often at the basis of good marriages. There are many other secrets that marriage experts will offer to couples seeking the magic formula. Whether youre pondering marriage or have already tied the knot, consider the following advice to make a marriage endure for the long haul. Theres no such thing as the perfect marriage. Some couples create an image of what they think marriage is supposed to be, and that image that often goes poof once reality sets in. Even soul mates are bound to frustrate or irritate one another from time to time. Couples should express their frustrations. Bottling up frustrations can eat at a person and eventually destroy a marriage. Talking about the things that are bothering you with your partner opens up a discussion and can help you work through things.
14
Natures Pathways | March 2012

Divorce should not be seen as a viable option. Couples who want to bail on the marriage at every turn could be directing their energy toward divorce as the only solution instead of discovering ways to remove the cause of strife. Divorce can sometimes be the easy way out when you think about the work that goes into keeping a marriage working. Experts say that there are a few issues, like adultery, abuse and drug/alcohol addiction, that may be reasonable catalysts for divorce if personal safety and sanity is being compromised. Make time for romance. Its easily said but not so easily done. Too often married couples forget what it was like to date when all of their attention was spent on each other instead of the house, kids, work, etc. Today there seems to be even more distractions, from e-mails to texts to pressure and obligations at the office. Happy couples find the time to spend quality time with their spouses even if thats only 10 minutes of alone time a day. Put we first. Many people operate on a me mentality. When youre part of a couple, give more to your spouse than you take. If he or she is doing the same, youre working collectively for the benefit of the marriage instead of yourselves. Respect each other. Often couples having troubles realize they treat strangers better than they treat each other. Would you use the insults or unflattering terms that you sometimes throw at your spouse with a complete stranger? Probably not. Good marriages are based on a foundation of respect and love. Its easy to lose feelings of love if the respect is gone. Couples can realize that there are some thorns that come with the roses of marriage, and staying happy together does take work for it to all be worth it.

It is an internationally recognized green building certification system that was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council 12 years ago. The system provides building owners and those who operate businesses with a distinct framework of guidelines that identify practical and measurable green design, construction, operation and maintenance solutions. Hypnotism: A brief history and its contemporary use

by Ken-adi ring, ch, ci

..............................................................

irst, the purpose of hypnosis is not to make a subject run around on a stage cackling like a chicken. Then one might ask, Just exactly what is hypnosis? What is hypnotherapy? Are they the same thing or is there a difference? Lets say that hypnosis is not an exact science; it varies slightly from one subject or client to the next because of varying issues and intensity of a problem or a desired outcome. Though there are standards in place, it varies from one hypnotist to the next given their training, experience and other factors. The term hypnosis emerges from the Greek word hypnos, meaning sleep; yet someone undergoing hypnosis is not asleep. Rather, a hypnotized subject is someone who is in a kind of heightened yet relaxed state of awareness. This state is receptive to levels of suggestion and trance induction. Though induced trance dance dates back to Greco/Roman times, it isnt until the 19th century that a mental process was evolved. It is thought that Dr. Sigmund Freud first used the term hypnotherapy in the late 19th century and favored it. After an intense
16
Natures Pathways | March 2012

period of research and exploration of hypnotism, Dr. Freud eventually left this practice for his emerging psychoanalysis or talk therapy. Psychoanalysis can be considered a subtle kind of self-hypnosis leading the subject out of the self-induced (negating self) danger zones. Preceding Freud, however, the founder of the practice known as mesmerism or animal magnetism, Franz Mesmer, induced trance states for a defined purpose. This was a precursor to hypnotism, as we know it today. Hypnosis was often thought to be the same as mesmerism, but rather, mesmerism was a stepping-stone to hypnosis. Later in the mid 20th century, Dr. Milton Erickson, who worked professionally as a clinician in the field of medicine and psychotherapy, revitalized the term hypnotherapy. Dr. Erickson is considered the father of modern hypnotherapy. He was a most influential 20th century scientist and proponent of hypnotherapy. He proposed that some forms of hypnosis and self-hypnosis were natural states of mind. Based largely on his work, authors, Bandler and Grinder formulated neuro-linguistic

programming (NLP) moving the effective process and formation of hypnotherapy as an even more useful tool for therapeutic use helping people recover from life issues that caused mental and energy imbalances, inaccurate and problematic coping skills, unreasonable fears or phobias and addictive traits. Hypnotism also was and still is brought into play helping people create/improve on positive traits and skill levels making them more effective and efficient people. There are two basic kinds of hypnosis, stage hypnosis, used for entertainment purposes and hypnosis used for therapeutic value, or hypnotherapy. We must say here that whatever term we use, hypnosis is not therapy. It is a tool that can be utilized and is, in the therapeutic setting, as well as in many aspects and areas of life, to help with issues that seem to distress or disable people in coping thus calling forth this process as a treatment protocol. Of the two kinds of hypnosis, the latter is our focus. The professional hypnotist is only there to help. When someone is in a state of hypnosis, he/she is in a very relaxed mental state and

Tools used are hypnosis techniques and the subject or clients own power of imagination, gentle focusing of the breath and leading into a deepening hypnotic relaxation.
is open to trance suggestion and transformation. The subject is brought to that state by a series of pre-hypnotic suggestions and relaxation techniques. This is referred to as an induction process. Tools used are hypnosis techniques and the subject or clients own power of imagination, gentle focusing of the breath and leading into a deepening hypnotic relaxation. Utilization of visualization and other techniques with relaxation and properly coached breathing helps invoke a heightened state of receptivity and suggestibility. This is coupled with a series of instructions gently yet clearly delivered by the hypnotist (or even by oneself if properly trained; hence the term self hypnosis). This induction process, when safely set up from the intake pre-talk session to suggestibility testing is best done in a conducive environment, which prepares the client for the possibility of a profound transformational impact. Suggestibility has to do with brain wave activity and receptivity. Four basic levels of brain/mind activity or function are: Beta, conscious daily activity; Alpha, subconscious, most receptive to hypnosis; Theta, light sleep dream state; and Delta, deep sleep. Suggestibility is most effective in the Alpha state. Self-hypnosis is a skill one can learn. It is similar to guided meditation, which focuses on control of the mind. In fact all hypnosis is in a way self-hypnosis. A good hypnotherapist or consulting hypnotist coaches a client to take better control of their life by teaching techniques of selfhypnosis, as well as leading the subject in session. Its a matter of relaxing with your own breath in a specified way and giving yourself suggestions (or affirmations) in this receptive state. One can use or create a script and record it and then have it play

back to oneself, too. With proper instruction this can be a very positive experience, putting a client more in the drivers seat of his/her life. The advantage of consulting with a professional hypnotist is the knowledge base and the expert delivery of suggestions. The client can let go; being guided to do so and able to let go to a process. Being professionally treated with expert care is a plus.

The Consumer Choice and Wellness Act

By Jane Hamilton & Jesse Martinez
urrently there is a battle behind the scenes that is hidden and out of sight for the average citizen. It has not been publicized, but there is a movement throughout the country with the goal to legislate your rights of freedom of choice for your healthcare away from you. Conversely, there is another movement of grassroots support, which is fighting to keep your healthcare rights of self-determination safe. The movement of self-determination regarding healing and wellness continues to grow and expand. According to a study conducted by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine in conjunction with the National Center for Health Statistics, approximately 40% of the population utilizes alternative healing. Yet in spite of the growing group of Americans that are taking more control of their healthcare by choosing a variety of alternative modalities, either as a complement to their traditional medicine or as their exclusive choice of wellness; there is an opposing movement to eliminate those alternatives choices. Generally alternative practitioners are unlicensed practitioners such as herbalists, homeopaths, naturopaths, nutritionists, aroma therapists, reflexologists, body-mind healing practitioners, yoga teachers, mediation instructors, Chinese herbal practitioners, energy workers and complementary health practitioners. Any modality practitioner who may make a health or wellness claim in association with their services may be in danger of violating medical or licensing laws. Although only a technicality, these practitioners may be charged with a violation leading to unwarranted superfluous disciplinary action or criminal charges. Some states are taking direct action to stop alterative providers from practicing. Pennsylvania currently has a bill in Committee, Pennsylvania H.B. 1717, which if passed would effectively eliminate all alternative healthcare and wellness availability. It would

criminalize practicing anything with in the proposed definition of naturopathic medicine, regardless whether it poses risk of harm to the public. The definition of the bill would essentially make hydrotherapy, topical medicines, food, vitamins, minerals, dietary supplements, homeopathy remedies and essentially all alternative practices criminal. The passage of this bill effectively eliminates alternative choices in that state. One wonders why those legislators sponsoring the bill, paid lobbyists and those employing the lobbyists have the need to control individual healthcare choices. Whats in it for them? The continuation of alternative medicine threatens not the consumer, but rather those wealth-accumulating industries and individuals, such as large medical conglomerates and the giant pharmaceutical companies. They stand the most to gain by the elimination of alternative healthcare and complementary practitioners. The persecution of alternative medicine continues in Australia as 400 doctors, medical researchers and scientists petition Australian universities, where one in three offer courses in some form of alternative therapy or complementary medicine, to close down those alternative degrees. The FDA continues to target a variety of supplements, including B6, natural thyroid hormones, bioidentical hormones and countless other natural products. Next on the FDAs list to ban is IV vitamin C, which demonstrates a variety of benefits in working with many conditions. It will be necessary to obtain these from a medical doctor and not your homeopathic or natural practitioner. Over 200 years ago when our Constitution was penned, Dr. Benjamin Rush warned us about the loss of medical freedom. Dr. Rush was a noted physician, professor of medicine and Surgeon General to all Continental armies. As a signer of the Declaration of

Independence representing Pennsylvania at the Continental Congress he said, Unless we put medical freedom into the constitution, the time will come when medicine will organize into an undercover dictatorship to restrict the art of healing to one class of Men and deny equal privileges to others. The Constitution the Republic should make a special privilege for medical freedoms as well as religious freedom. There is a grassroots movement here in the state of Wisconsin to pass a bill that would confirm and insure citizens rights to continue to self-determine regarding their health and wellness choices. The Consumer Choice and Wellness Act, Bill SB-280, is sitting at a standstill in committee. Once passed, this Act of only 7 pages will secure practitioners right to practice their alternative modality and allow the citizens of Wisconsin to choose their own path to wellness. WI for Choice in Wellness, a non-profit organization of unpaid members has been reaching out to circulate petitions for support of this bill. President Steve Lankford said that one of the goals of this organization is to try and move the bill from committee to a vote on the Wisconsin House and Senate floors before the session ends in April. With enough support from the people of Wisconsin this bill has a great chance of passage. As one practitioner, Nicki Jansma, owner of Remedies LLC Holistic Natural Wellness Center, stated, Because your life is the consequences of your decisions it should not be the governments decision to determine what the consequences of your life are, especially in healthcare.

save money on energy bills ......................................................................

ome is where the heart is, where families grow and generally where the most of our leisure time is spent. Working with green technology for the best insulation will keep your house warm, welcoming, comfortable and cozy and will save you money, all at the same time. Insulation advancements are on the horizon at all times, experts say. Take a look at innovation by Icynene, for example. Their soft, expanding spray foam insulation and air barrier material protects homeowners from the harmful outdoor environment and from energy-robbing air leakage. Icynene pioneered the spray foam technology and now leads in industry training.

Why are homeowners turning to spray foam insulation? Experts tell us that older insulation types, such as fiberglass, will settle, compact and sag over time, decreasing their insulation properties. Spray foam insulation is energy efficient, says Icynene, and it has a high R-value due to its ability to seal and insulate at the same time. The spray foam solutions are created with water blowing agents and renewable and recycled content, which help reduce greenhouse gas emissions to support a healthier environment. Spray foam insulation can be used in new home construction or additions and insulation upgrades to existing homes (attics, crawlspaces) during

remodeling projects. With spray foam insulation you can maintain healthy indoor air while reducing your HVAC equipment needs and saving on energy bills. In addition, homeowners can conserve construction materials without the need for excess sealing and still achieve optimal airtightness. Spray foam insulation doesnt pass off gas over time, performs at peak levels for the lifetime of your home, and, because airborne moisture is controlled, the durability of the building remains unthreatened by the growth of mold and mildew.

Mullein
by cheryl hosmer

Verbascum thapsus ..............................................

ullein has many nicknames, including torches, candlewick plant, velvet dock and, my favorite, campers toilet paper. The names describe how the plant looks. Mullein is a tall stately plant. Once you recognize it in an uncut field or roadside you wont forget it. Mullein is a biennial plant, so the first year of growth a rosette of large, gray-green, fuzzy, soft leaves are at the base of the plant. The second years growth of this plant creates a dramatic five- to seven-foot stalk of leaves with a flower spike about twelve inches long covered with tiny yellow flowers. Mullein is very rich in iron and contains vitamins A and B-complex, as well as minerals such as calcium and magnesium. Mullein also contains polysaccharides, which have mucilaginous properties. The cooling, soothing properties of the mucilage lubricate tissues reduce inflammation, act as an expectorant and enhance healing. Mullein has many medicinal uses and the leaves, flowers and roots can be used. This herbs gentle nature makes it one of the best for childrens health problems. The seed is not recommended and is said to be slightly narcotic. Mullein is most commonly associated with respiratory problems, providing soothing relief to the lungs and throat. This herb is especially good for a dry, irritated cough. Mullein can relax muscle spasms, and it also has diuretic and antiseptic properties. Mullein can stimulate the expectoration of excess phlegm. Mullein oil can be made by putting the flowers in olive oil in a closed container and leaving it in the warm sunlight or near a warm stove for two to three weeks. The flowers are then strained off and the oil can be used as is or 10% alcohol can be added to preserve it. This oil, warmed slightly, is commonly used in Germany for earaches and hemorrhoids. Mullein oil can be applied externally to relieve itching and help heal boils or sores.
20
Natures Pathways | March 2012

Mullein tea is very soothing to the throat. The tea would be made by steeping the leaves in boiling water. The tea should be strained through cheesecloth or coffee filter, to remove the fine hairs on the leaves, before drinking. The combination of herbs mullein and lobelia are excellent for lymphatic stagnation and lung/respiratory issues. Mullein can also be very healing to the intestinal tract. The only precaution is to not use the oil in the ear if you have a perforated ear drum.

What is your mission? ..............................................................

by shelley riutta, mse, lPc

ne of the things that has helped me move forward so powerfully in my practice is to have clarity about my mission my bigger why for why Im doing what Im doing. This mission is an expanding, evolving mission and the more I can begin to tune into it, the easier my path will be. We all have a deeper spiritual mission for being on the planet particularly therapists and healers. Therapists and healers are on the leading edge of the growth and expansion that is happening on the planet. The more clarity you have about your mission, the easier it will be for you to move beyond your fears and take action. When we are in service to our mission, we can let go of the smaller fears of our ego-like: What will people think? Am I good enough? What if I fail? I often tell my holistic practice coaching clients who are in fear, If you are in fear, you are in your ego and have lost focus of your mission, which is to be of service. When you are focused on service, you are in your higher self, being an ambassador of light and healing on the planet it is not about you! I coach a client that by not getting their information product done because of fear, they are stopping the beautiful flow of
Natures Pathways | March 2012

being in service and helping people with their gifts. When they really understand this deeply, they let the fear fall away and joyfully move forward in their business.

Tips to tune into and live your mission

Take some time out every six months to clarify your mission. Go to a beautiful, inspiring place and ask yourself, What is my mission on the planet right now; how am I here to serve? Just let yourself freely write. Do not try to figure it out in your head. Let it flow from your spirit. Post your mission visibly in your work space as a reminder of where your focus needs to be. When you are in fear and procrastinate, just gently bring yourself back to the phrase: This isnt about me, it is about being of service; I can release my fears. Remember that you are not alone with your mission. You have tremendous spiritual support that is always with you; walking with you every step of the way. Remind yourself of this and open up to this loving support. I remember a friend of mine telling me that spirit was her silent partner in the work she did in the world. Let your mission expand. Oftentimes our fears will cloud over our true mission and

keep us playing small. Give yourself permission to be all that you came here to be and to not hold ANYTHING back! When you hold yourself back from play, small things will be much harder for you. Surprisingly, the bigger you allow yourself to play moving beyond your fears the easier things will get for you. Playing bigger does not mean you have to be on stage in front of thousands sharing your message. Many people have missions that are not in the public eye, but are equally as powerful. The important thing is to make sure you are being of service to the many people you came here to serve; and oftentimes you will need to be more visible than you are to do that (so people can find you). Make sure your mission includes lots of self-care and nurturing of YOU. Gone are the days when you had to sacrifice your own well being to serve others. Affirm I am supported and nurtured by myself and the universe as I step out fully to live my mission.

Dean of Blue Sky Massage School passionate about changing lives
By Alison Eggert and Jackie Peters

touches
aren Lewis-Weigle has always wanted to help people, but it wasnt until a life-changing motorcycle accident at the age of 21 that things would be set into motion. A number of surgeries on her leg and physical therapy still had her doctors saying that she would never walk normally and would need a brace the rest of her life. Out of desperation, I had to start looking for an alternative, says Karen, recalling that her grandfather always believed in caring for and treating the whole body. Karen drew from her grandfathers knowledge and sought out more and more information on nutrition, herbology and natural healing. Working with natural healers, she was able to custom design a therapy program that included meditation; quieting her mind to allow her body to heal. Karen eventually regained strength and movement in her leg. After this struggle, she knew that she wanted to help people using natural methods. I wanted to revitalize and rehabilitate others without causing pain, says Karen.

touch the lives of others

In 1978, Karen started studying massage therapy in Michigan; by 1983 she was working at a holistic medical practice. Karen had decided to start teaching patients about healthy living, noting that people can heal faster if they know how to take care of themselves. She didnt know it at the time, but the first Blue Sky classes had been born. Since then, Karen has studied and worked with well-known professionals in her field from studying homeopathy in Greece to yogic traditions and philosophies in India and at the Himalayan Institute in Pennsylvania. Fast forward a quarter of a century and there are three Blue Sky School of Professional Massage and Therapeutic Bodywork (Blue Sky) locations around the state. And it didnt stop there. Karen created Blue Sky as a non-profit, enabling a local and global connection. Ive always had a desire to do more, says Karen. I believe in going the extra distance. To date, Blue Sky has contributed to building a hospital in Dehradun, India, and the first free library in Kumbo, Cameroon, which has created reading programs to help illiteracy problems in Africa. Blue Sky has financially contributed to village schools in Allahabad, India as well. The school takes a very holistic and diversified approach with the goal of graduating massage therapists who really care about people and reach out and touch the community through educational opportunities and massage services. This approach, combined with Karens energy, has had a ripple effect on its students. After 27 years, Blue Sky has graduates all over the world, who continue and embrace Karens vision to really touch the lives of others Blue Skys motto. Today, Blue Sky has a distinguished reputation, national accreditation and state approval. The accreditation is important, especially in these economic times, as it allows us to offer federal financial aid to those who qualify, says Alison Eggert, marketing coordinator for Blue Sky. The school also stands out because it offers programs/tracks with a minimum of 853 hours, with the state requirement being 600 hours. Students appreciate the convenient hours, specialized seminars, national speakers and instructors who work in the profession and own their own businesses. Chris Wolf, an alumnus from Green Bay and massage practice owner, values this comprehensive education. I was taught everything you need to get out the door and get started with your own business, she says. The larger skill set that we have to help people upon graduation really allows us to go above and beyond for our clients. When looking back at her Blue Sky education, Wolf recalls, It was the best life-changing experience I ever had. In 2010, Sheila Schaller found herself working as a metal fabricator looking for fulfillment in her life. Thats when she met someone, a massage therapy student, who inspired her to go back to school. Schaller took a leap of faith and enrolled at Blue Sky, the same school that came so highly recommended to her by that student she had met and many others. Now graduated, Schaller, co-owner of Heavens Hands in Germantown, says of her experience with Blue Sky: It changed my whole life! Giving much of the credit to Karen, She was instrumental in getting my business set up and another job lined up before graduation. Karens passion for helping others can also be found in the other aspects of Blue Sky Educational Foundation. Karen has partnered with Nicholas Jacoby to create Blue Sky Animal Rescue, which now takes in many abandoned and injured domestic and wild animals. In 2004, Blue Sky received congressional recognition for working with Pathways of Hope, to provide El Salvadorian young women with therapeutic treatments. Its amazing to think about how one individual can touch so many lives. From starting a school, traveling to across the globe to help others, treating clients, helping students and animals, Karen has touched the lives of many. Never underestimate the power of one.

seeds of change: from guilt to grow ......................................................................................

By Tina Lupiezowiec

n a day and age of eco-information overload, people are struggling to make sustainable choices that fit within their budgets, make reasonably good sense and, ideally, silence the nagging voice within them that is continually suggesting that they should do MORE for the planet, MORE for their health and MORE for others.Until they do more, the voice tells them they should feelguilty. That line of thinking is flawed.Moreis not a destination or a defined goal at best, its a vague comparison between things. And guilt, aside from being annoying, is linked to numerous mental and physical health problems; it will do more to sap ones motivation than to inspire positive action. If guilt stems from feelings of culpability, especially for imagined offenses or from a sense of inadequacy,1 then the first step to crushing guilt, like a soda can on its way to the recycling bin, is to realize that one individual is not responsible for the current state of our planet. The second step is to accept that imperfections, poor

choices and mistakes are not markers of inadequacy, but rather, evidence that a person is aliveand doing something. Rather than a dismal internal mantra of DO MORE OR FEEL GUILTY, people can make great strides when they say, Im adventurous! What small thing can I do today that makes me feel proud? With spring around the corner, buying seeds is something many folks are itchin to do. What a golden opportunity to plant the seeds of change, both in oneself and in ones garden! A no-regrets start to the planting season would be to select varieties of seeds from seed companies that are non-GMO and offer organic, heirloom and/or sustainably farmed open-pollinated seeds. You might think: Open-pollinated who? Heirloom what? GM-Oh my goodness, what have I gotten myself into? But there is no need to feel crushed under the weight of eco-babble; knowledge is a journey that does not have to be taken at warp speed. A quick review of basic terminology, the names of trusted seed companies and some links to explore may help.

Heirloom varieties are naturally diverse, old-fashioned plants that have withstood the test of time, adapting well to specific climates and conditions. Heirlooms, like endangered animals, are slipping into extinction as a result of commercial preference for hybrid varieties and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Hybrids

are pollination creations that are not genetically modified with foreign genes. Open-pollinated hybrids occur naturally through cross-pollination. Other hybrids are created by controlled breeding to achieve desired favorable traits, such as disease resistance or uniformity. Hybrid plants cant breed true; the seeds from hybrid plants produce plants that have a greater chance of displaying characteristics passed down from their grandparents than they do of being similar to their hybrid parent. are genetic mixes of unrelated species and could be the single scariest act of arrogant

Promote family time at the table .................................................................

odays families are busier and more budget conscious than ever and it seems like opportunities to come together are scarce. Kids may be engrossed in extracurricular activities and Mom and Dad may be putting in extra hours at work to make ends meet. But making the time for family can improve family relationships and foster success for kids and adults alike. Perhaps nowhere does the opportunity to enjoy family time occur more than around the dinner table. Only one in five families sit down to dinner together, with many instead grabbing meals on the go or choosing fast food. Neither option is especially healthy or cost-conscious. But there are ways even the busiest families can enjoy a healthy meal together without breaking the bank. Embrace technology. Its hard for many people, parents and children alike, to go an hour without being on the Internet. Families looking to spend more quality time together at the dinner table can now make the most of their time and their budget thanks to E-Mealz.com, a userfriendly online resource that provides a variety of easy and budgeted weekly meal plans, complete with delicious dinner recipes and a corresponding grocery list so you just print and go shopping!

Change ......................................
by Tony bednarowski

ecently, a very good friend of mine, who happens to be a personal trainer, asked me, How can I get my clients to commit to my training and nutrition advice? And, How do I get my clients to stop lying to me? I gave him the same answer that I have given many of my colleagues over the years; YOU dont.

To begin, there are two things we must always understand: Never OVERESTIMATE the power you have to change someone else Never UNDERESTIMATE the power you have to change yourself
You see, a personal trainer or a nutrition specialists job is every bit as hard and frustrating as a drug and alcohol counselors. First, you have to get the client to believe and trust in you. But, within that, the biggest obstacle is in determining whether this client really wants CHANGE bad enough to make it happen for himself. People generally set out on any new or already tried endeavor with the finest of intensions, but their conviction comes at a price most are unwilling to commit to. This commitment is called CHANGE. Changing ones lifestyle takes time and work; it is done in steps, retraining and creating new habits. Like any successful undertaking, the retooling starts from within. Committing and being completely honest with ones self is an absolute must. One has to fully desire that which they are setting out to do, be that what they want or what they truly need. It is
27
Natures Pathways | March 2012

necessary to understand that it will take time; realize there will be obstacles to overcome and that a good, sound support system should be in place. All of this is imperative in order to make ones journey successful and life-lasting. So, you see, there is more that goes into CHANGE than just a good thought or intention. I encourage you to take the time to set yourself up for success with what is outlined here. Be completely honest with yourself. Make your commitment with your intent solid and pure ... then, CHANGE will become inevitable.

Green ideas for st. Patricks Day .............................................................................

t. Patricks Day is best known for its parades of revelers decked head to toe in green. Green, after all, is the official color of the holiday. However, those showing off their love of green can take it one step further and implement environmentally friendly, or green, practices for their celebration and beyond. The United States Census Bureau reports that each year roughly 26 billion pounds of corned beef is sold for the holiday and two billion pounds of cabbage. Sales for chrysanthemums, particularly of a lime green shade, come in at around $25 million. The holiday is certainly one of excess, but there are many ways to minimize a lot of it and incorporate some eco-friendly ideas into St. Patricks Day celebrations or any celebrations for that matter.

ften we can use the shape, size, color and texture of our fingernails to determine the health of the body. As it manifests in the fingernails, we can tell of possible problems as a result of nail signals. Since fingernails are one of the last tissues to receive the nutrients carried by the blood, they show signs of trouble before other better-nourished tissues do. What follows are some nail conditions along with the corresponding problems they may indicate. The body always has different signs to try and tell us that we are off balance. If your nails are green colored, it may be an internal bacterial/ fungal infection. A yellow coloring of the nails may show signs of lymphatic stress, respiratory stress, liver stress, diabetes or poor circulation. If they appear dark in color, it may mean you are anemic, or have kidney or liver stress. Pale nails show lack of minerals, anemia, or liver or kidney stress as well.

White spots may indicate low zinc, thyroid stress, parasites, HCL (hydrochloric acid) stress, chronic constipation or fatigue. White lines that are vertical may show heart stress, arsenic poisoning or poor absorption of foods. Horizontal lines can be liver stress or lead/arsenic poisoning. If your nail conditions include blue beds, it may mean lung or heart stress, drug reaction or blood toxicity. If your nail beds are red, it can indicate heart stress, especially in the thumbs. Red skin around the cuticles is poor assimilation of EFA (essential fatty acids) or your correct oils for your body. If black bands are showing, chemotherapy/radiation reaction is likely. Clouded or pink half moons show that Candida may be present in your body. The shape of your nails may also mean something. If they curve downward on the ends, it may be heart, liver or respiratory stress. Broad tip nails that curve downwards mean lung stress. Flat nails usually are showing physical weakness or insufficient oxygenation. Thin, spoon-shaped nails mean anemia may be present in the body. Elevated tip nails show lymph stress, respiratory or lung stress, or diabetes. Very wide and square nails indicate hormonal imbalances. Vertical grooves may explain poor absorption, kidney stress, joint stress or protein/calcium/iron deficiency, whereas horizontal grooves in the nail show emotional, physical or intestinal stress. However, horizontal grooves in the thumb usually mean low energy. The texture of nails may be trying to tell you something also. If your nails are brittle, you may be suffering from circulatory, thyroid, kidney stress, or iron deficiency. If your nails chip or

peel easily it may be due to protein, HCL, mineral, vitamin A or D shortages, or thyroid stress. Thick nails tell us we may have fungus infection, thyroid stress and circulatory problems. Thin nails indicate Candida. If your nails are pitted, it can mean hormonal stress or hair loss. Missing half moons are telling you that your central nervous system may be stressed, you have anemia or protein deficiency. Even different fingers mean different indicators. Horizontal grooves on the first finger mean skin stress. Horizontal grooves on your middle finger mean muscular stress. Horizontal grooves on your ring finger may mean eye or respiratory stress. And, horizontal grooves on your little (pinky) finger mean nerve, gallbladder or throat stress. We at Natural Health Works can test to see which cleanse you may need, or what will balance your overall body deficiencies to protect not only your organs, but your fingernails. Let us show you our colored charts indicating some of the above problems with your fingernails. Be and stay healthy with all that your body is trying to show or express to you. If we listen to our bodies or watch for signs and signals, it is another step closer to better health.

its that time again ....................................................

by ernest bingham
armth is getting stronger every day. Margaritas are calling. For us in the masonry restoration trade, the tools are out and cleaned. The scaffold and well-used equipment may get a new coat of paint, fresh oil, just that care given to a good old friend one that has shared hours and labor in the sun and rain. Memories of jobs done, that wall repaired across from the school, that leaning chimney that was going to fall through the roof, caught just in time. Nobody hurt, everybody happy. I move a little slower it seems, each year. Old masons are like old wine, they just get a little better as time goes by. Once I used to jump from the roof just to enjoy the drop. Now I climb down nice and easy. There is a lot to be said for my trade. You never get real fat, you never get rich, you dont live long after you quit. So you pretty much eat what you want, you make enough to get by and you just dont quit. Along the way you get to meet incredible folks, some rich, some not, a rare bad one; mostly just good people like you. I cant imagine trading it. This is the time of year to examine, explore and address any repairs needed to those old brick or stone walls, stone foundations, chimneys stoops and stairs. Get on it in the spring. Dont wait until summer to find a good mason to help you. The good ones try to book up their repair schedule for the warm months as quickly as they can. It is the nature of the trade. If you wait too long you may be stuck with people who are learning at your expense.

This is the time of year to examine, explore and address any repairs needed to those old brick or stone walls, stone foundations, chimneys stoops and stairs.
Your home is your sanctuary; it is your job to hire those who honor your sanctuary. If on the job they dress in clothes that have foul words on them, they are foul people and you have made a mistake. The good ones dont always look good. They are rarely polished. One thing they all have in common is passion for their trade. By and large they are good natured and generally laugh a lot. They must always be neat and clean up after themselves every day. Even if you tell them they dont have to, they will do it anyway. If you find two masons disagreeing on a project you propose, find out why. Dont go by numbers, go by knowledge. Five lessertrained masons can agree on a procedure that a master would advise against. If the only thing that matters to you is price, hire a handy man. If you are a good steward of your sanctuary, get done what you can budget, as you can. I have worked for some clients for decades. Dont be in a hurry to do a good job. Be committed to having a good job done. The last tip, and second only in importance to the first, hire someone you actually like. Dont just settle. We are a likeable lot. We are not smart enough to be evil. They dont work as hard. You can actually leave the doors unlocked. Good luck with your projects this year!

Here are some tips in what to look for in a restoration mason:

First and foremost, the good ones should be able to explain procedurally how a job will be done. What kind of materials precisely are going to be used? How and in what way those materials interact with your project? What is the life expectancy of the repair? What is it going to do in the freeze/thaw cycle? How is it going to look when done, next year, 10 years from now? Expect an education because the good ones are educators.

Turning your life and home into a sanctuary .............................................................

by heidi Kelley

ve always known my lifes purpose was to help people. I just didnt realize until recent years how becoming my authentic self would help me as much as it would have an impact on others lives. Two years ago I was guided to combine two passions of mine, real estate and spirituality, to become The Intuitive Realtor/Healer. This is something I had never heard of before. I Googled it, but didnt find anything in my search. I couldnt find anyone else in the world doing it, at least not advertising it openly. Ive been searching for what this means for me personally and for my business ever since. My curiosity has guided me to take many spiritual classes. These include Spiritual Mastery, Intuition, Advanced Energy Healing, Reiki and my current class, Soul Coaching. The majority of these classes have been taken through Rev. Martina Schmidt. I have also spent a lot of time researching on my own. Energy is an amazing thing!

everything is energy

All life is made up of constantly changing energy, including our bodies, homes and everything inside our homes. I work together as a team with my clients using our energy to manifest their

dreams, whether they are buying or selling a home. I assist anyone that comes to me, not just real estate clients. Our homes are our sacred spaces, our sanctuary away from the rest of the world. Many people are sensitive to the vibrations in buildings. These vibrations are held in our walls, our furniture and also in our bodies. To help elevate, clear and create a space you want in your home, I work with the energy and do what is called a Space Clearing or Energy Clearing. I do this in homes of clients, businesses, offices, wherever I am needed. Everything that happens in a building vibrates and leaves an energetic imprint. A Space Clearing aligns and attunes the energies of a space to their highest possible potential. For my listings, I use this to attract new buyers. For my buyers, once the house is purchased, I use this to clear the previous owners energy. I also do Energy Healing on my clients. Energy Healing is a very gentle way to heal using the universal life force energy that flows through every living thing. All sessions are done fully clothed lying on a massage table. I work with the energy in and around your body, opening and aligning your chakras. In both the Space Clearing and Energy Healing, the vibrations are raised. Guilt and shame are among the lowest vibrations. Love and joy are among the highest vibrations. The higher your vibrations, the happier, and the healthier you are.
Heidi Kelley, The Intuitive Realtor/Healer (Keller Williams Realty), offers a variety of services including Space Clearing, Energy Healing, Meditations, Crystals, Altars, Vision Boards and Soul Coaching. There are many articles and testimonials on her Web site and blog at www.myintuitiverealty.com. You can contact her at hkelley65@gmail.com or 608.575.4183. My desire is to assist individuals, not just real estate clients, to turn their lives and their homes into a sanctuary, to create a sacred space and to be a blessing to others. She is in the Madison area, but works in surrounding areas as well. At the end of March, she will have a booth at the Wellife Mind-Body-Spirit Expo in the Sheraton in Madison. Also, once a month, she holds a MeetUp Group at her Keller Williams office, Living the Law of Attraction, Mind, Body & Spirit. This is a group open to the public that is bringing like-minded people together.

unfolding from within ...........................................................

By Leora Weitzman

art of being human, it seems, is comparing ourselves with other people. We may think, Whats wrong with me? Or, Why cant they do what I do? Or, Im/Youre not good enough. Sometimes feeling wiser and one up is a tempting alternative to feeling inferior. If were in the habit of feeling one down (or one up), we may believe that this feeling captures a truth about ourselves and others. Our habit of feeling this way creates repetition of the one down (or one up) feeling, and the repetition seems like evidence that the picture is accurate. Not only are we taken in by this evidence we actually manufacture additional proof by responding to our experiences on the basis of this interpretation of reality. For example, consider the dynamic of seeking help. According to one up/one down, if I need help, Im one down: damaged, defective, missing something. Im like a leaky water jug that needs repairs and refilling. Now watch how I create more evidence for myself. If I feel better after someones intervention, that person is one up; her or his water jug is clearly fuller than mine and less leaky, so by comparison, Im one down and need further intervention. If on the other hand I dont feel better, then Im still in need. And so the cycle repeats, further proving my one down-ness. The hidden assumption here is that we, like leaky vessels, need to be repaired and filled from the outside. But we have something not all vessels have; were alive. Given the right environment, living beings from plants to babies grow (and self-repair) from within. I witness this regularly at the school where I teach. Our students range in age from 19 to past 60 and represent many stages of emotional/spiritual development. All leave more fully themselves than when they entered; previously undeveloped skills and character traits unfold like flowers in the sun. A new confidence here, a new sensitivity there, a hidden gift for dance, for art, for . Even intuitive abilities, which some students think they dont have,
Natures Pathways | March 2012

begin to emerge, as surely as teeth, given the shelter of emotional safety and the food of accountability and feedback. So what does this mean for the dynamic of seeking help? The real reason support from others is appropriate is that were social beings with social needs. Sometimes, in fact, our social needs are quite specific, and its appropriate to seek help from people with specific skills. But professional or skilled helpers are not enormous, flawless water jugs who have it all together. We all have a certain number of leaks and dings in our organic, self-repairing vessels, and the size of our vessels has little to do with our ability to support one another. For true support is not pouring something from one container into another. Its providing an environment in which others can grow from within. We all need this environment, and we all have within us the ability to provide it. Far from a one up/one down mechanical world, we live in an organic world of so many dimensions and such interdependence that the possibilities are beyond imagining. May new possibilities spring forth within your life and your relationships this season.

Mimosa Books & Gifts

imosa Books & Gifts has been a fixture in downtown Madison since 1984. In that time, the location and ownership of this metaphysical shop have changed and evolved; employees have joined the Mimosa family, learned, grown and sometimes even fallen in love. Amid all this change, however, some things have stayed the same. One of them is cats. Mimosas first cat was Kudo, who in his time was arguably the most famous feline presence in Madison. Kudo was known to approach customers with a friendly leg rub, and then curl up at their feet while they browsed spiritual books or checked out the relaxing music selection. For many, his presence was part of the relaxing, spiritual experience. Kudo passed on some years ago, but Mimosa is still full of cats: Japanese lucky cats, figures of the Egyptian Bastet, cat-themed tarot cards, greeting cards, magnets ... You name it! The store has a tradition of supporting charities, particularly those that benefit animals. Above it all, a framed picture of Kudo still presides. These days Mimosa carries more than just books and music. They also have a huge selection of incense, candles, spiritual DVDs, divination tools, crystals, statues and jewelry among other things! Where else can you pick up a Tibetan mala, a feng shui frog, Norse runes, a book on shamanism and a groovy mood ring all in the same trip? And Mimosa offers more than fantastic merchandise. A highly

qualified in-house psychic is on hand to give readings every day. The store regularly schedules events, such as reiki shares and psychic nights with the well-known channeler, Akeeya. A regular newsletter keeps subscribers up to date and shares information on metaphysical topics. Most importantly, every employee is happy to provide help and information on any spiritually related topic that may come up. Mimosas current owners, Diane Doughman and Ashley Leavy, see a bright future for the store. We try to keep things interesting, says Ashley. We work hard to find new merchandise and services to benefit our customers. My personal project right now is to fill the store with as many fair trade, sustainable and local products as possible. Through our Web site, were also striving to become a global business. Actually, not just a business a true resource center. We want both our Web site and our physical store to be places where people turn to learn about the worlds spiritual traditions and other metaphysical topics. Mimosa is located at 260 West Gilman Street in Madison, just off State Street. Theyre open weekdays 11:00 am - 7:00 pm, Saturdays from 10:00 am to 6:30 pm and Sundays from noon to 6:00 pm. You can reach them at 608.256.5432 or by e-mail at Mimosaone@ sbcglobal.net. Their Web site at mimosaspirit.com has not only merchandise, but also information, articles and a calendar of events. Or just come in and enjoy the positive energy. Even if you arrive frazzled, by the time you leave youll be purring!

In doing so, we are sharing our resources and talents that are so very important to many of our local charitable organizations that need more support for their vital work in our communities. There is no better way to help these organizations and our communities than through your sharing and giving in 2012! yamuna body rolling is a revolutionary approach to health and fitness using balls designed exclusively for this practice. it consists of a series of routines using 6 to 10-inch balls. Unlike other ball exercises, ybr goes far beyond random movement and stretch. it allows you to work specific muscles in detail, to create suppleness in tight areas and optimize range of motion. yamuna body rolling re-educates muscles and stimulates bone, creating positive, permanent changes in the body. The ball moves along muscles to stretch them, dislodge tension and discomfort, increase blood flow and promote healing. lying over the ball, you literally roll your body out almost like dough, stretching and elongating your muscles. The YBR routines follow specific sequences that match the bodys own logic and order. Starting where each muscle begins, at its origin, you roll toward where it attaches to the point called its insertion. Whether youre young or old, a fitness buff or a couch potato, rolling with a ybr ball can help you feel better, more vibrant, more alive! Youll have a ball toning, strengthening and realigning your body. fee: $90 for 4 weeks. Please pre-register. The chakra house, 330 W. lakeside st., madison, 608.237.6128, www.thechakrahouse.com.
