CHAPTER 2.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY RESEARCH DESIGNS The researchers have utilized both descriptive and exploratory designs in achieving the objectives of the study. The descriptive research design aims to focus in determining the market feasibility of operating an arts school in Cebu City by obtaining the demand and interest of the high school students in enrolling in an arts school. Its other purpose was to obtain the respondents preferences with respect to: a.) Various field of the arts b.) Special programs offered in an arts school c.) Facilities d.) Semestral fees e.) Location f.) Promotional activity g.) Cost and quality of education The feasibility of operating an arts school which offers baccalaureate degrees in Cebu City has not been examined much in any local studies. That is the reason why the exploratory research design was employed in this study. The study is geared towards examining the feasibility and later on the sustainability of an arts school operation.

RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT The location of the study is in Cebu City. The city lies along the eastern coastal belt of Cebu Province. The total area covered by Cebu City is 291.2 square kilometers. Cebu City is bordered by Mactan Channel in the east, municipality of Balamban and the city of Toledo in the west, Mandaue City in the north and Talisay City in the south. The municipality of Consolacion lies in the northern part and the Bohol strait lies in the eastern part of the city. (www.mapsoftheworld.com)

www.googlemaps.com Cebu City has been one of the progressive cities in the Philippines. Once the capital of the Philippines during the Spanish colonization, Cebu City happens to be an important center of art and culture in the country. The theaters and museums give a picture of art in Cebu City. Many art exhibitions take place in the city. The city government provides support to painters and artists. Performing arts in Cebu City have evolved to a great extent. Music and dance forms are practiced by most of the citizens. Music is

accompanied by many types of instruments like guitars, bamboo flute, and harps. These instruments are even manufactured in the city. Visual arts are also given much importance. The sculptures that are made by the modern artists are displayed at Cebu Public Museums. Despite the booming economy which made the city busy, it has developed an emphasis on preserving its art and culture. RESEARCH RESPONDENTS The study needs research respondents that would possess the characteristics and attributes necessary for obtaining the objectives of the study. It also needs to employ a certain kind of sampling process that fits the circumstance of the study. The researchers chose the kind of respondents that are sought to be the primary market of the arts school. Since the proposed art school aims to provide college graduates equipped in talents and skills of the various art fields, the researchers believe that high school students of Cebu City both enrolled in public and private schools are the best representatives of such expected demand. The study employed the stratified sampling design with proportional allocation in determining the allocation of the samples between public and private schools. This was done in order to achieve the representativeness of the sample size with the population. Each school category represents a stratum. The table below shows the population for each stratum, proportional allocations and sample sizes needed:

% DISTRIBUTION SAMPLE SIZE CATEGORY SUB-POPULATION (N) a/b (a) Public Private TOTAL 49,224 24674 (b)73,898 66.6% 33.33% 100% 254 128 382 (n)

The data above presents the population of high school students in Cebu City for the school year 2010-2011 which was taken from the Department of Education Division Office located in Imus Avenue, Cebu City. It shows that public high school students cover two/thirds share of the entire population while the private high school students cover the rest of the population. In order to ensure the representativeness of the population, same distribution was taken for the sample sizes. After determining the sample size per stratum, the researchers then employed the quota sampling in their survey. Quota sampling is the selection of respondents with the end in view of achieving the predetermined required sample size from the population regardless of how they are chosen. The research respondents comprise of male and female high school students in Cebu City. They may be enrolled either in public or private school. The school may be in the north or the south district of Cebu City.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT The study uses the survey questionnaire as a research instrument for data gathering. The questionnaire contains an introductory letter for the chosen respondents addressing key information like the course of the researchers, reason why the study was conducted and the assurance that any information obtained from the respondent will be kept confidential. It also contains several vital information about the respondent such as name, address, age, gender, nationality, name of school, and family income. Then, a series of ten questions relating to the study conducted follows. A copy of the survey questionnaire is attached at the appendices section of this study. RESEARCH PROCEDURES The study is supported by data gathered through the conduct of a survey. Before the research instrument, the questionnaire, was used in the conduct of the survey the researchers placed the questionnaires into pre-testing. The questionnaires were given to ten (10) selected respondents which is representative of the sample of the population. The pre-testing was conducted in order for the researchers to detect some ambiguity in the questions that is present in the questionnaire. This will add to the validity of the data that would be gathered in the research. The questionnaires were then revised in accordance with the results of the pre-testing to prepare it for distribution. The final set of questionnaires were then given to the three hundred eighty two (382) respondents living in the area of Cebu City, which is the sample size of the total population of high school students from both public and private

schools in Cebu city. The sample size of three hundred eighty two (382) was computed using the formula given below. Formula:

Where: n= sample size N= total population P= Proportion assumed by 0.5 E= Sampling error 5%.

Computed as follow:

n= 382.17 or 382

Below is the table summary of how the questionnaires were distributed to the different secondary schools in different areas of Cebu City.

The researchers waited for the respondents to finish answering the questionnaires and collected them immediately. After collecting the questionnaires, the researchers tabulated and interpreted the data gathered. The answers of the respondents in the questionnaires were carefully presented and statistically analyzed by the researchers. Percentage, weighted average and frequency methods were used by the researchers to analyze the information gathered. Aside from the primary information, secondary information was also gathered. Information about the total population, the names of each school in the City of Cebu and their respective addresses were sought from the Department of Education Division Office.
