What does it take for us to hear the voice of God?

By Tricia Hoyt

What does it take for us to hear the voice of God? Its a fascinating question that lurks in the narrative of the Transfiguration story in this weeks Gospel. The Transfiguration is an odd story, which at first glance appears to be about seeing, but instead turns out to be about listening. Peter, James, and John gain a glimpse into the wonder of Jesus seen, as it were, through Gods eyes, and in turn they get to hear the voice of God. The message rings out, and its loud and clear: Listen to him. I wouldnt mind if my God-voices were that clear. To be honest, I never quite understand the people who say, God spoke to me today and placed it in my heart to do such and such. I wonder, how do they know its God speaking? Im a tad envious of their conviction. If I were to hear such a voice, Id be afraid its just my inner desires making their presence known. Plus, lets face it, its really difficult to disagree with someone right after they tell you that God has told them what course of action to take. What could you say? I disagree with God sounds a bit lofty. Secretly I long to say God told me to tell you hes changed his mind, but I have never dared. So, I guess it comes down to what the Gospel suggests: Listen to him. I listen to the life of Jesus, the puzzling parables, the self-giving love recounted in the Gospel narratives. And I listen to the agonizing cries of Jesus now present in the pleas of those who hurt, suffer alienation, hatred and poverty. And I listen to the challenge of Jesus in the call to right wrongs and become builders of peace. And I listen in joy to the voices of those who already live the transformative vision that Jesus offers.

Please join us in the Daily Mass Chapel on Wednesday, March 7 for Taiz Prayer.

Reconciliation is held each Wednesday during Lent at 6:30 PM. Stations of the Cross are prayed every Friday of Lent at 6:00 PM; meet in Daily Mass Chapel.

2ND SUNDAY OF LENT

FIRST DOWN With Fr. Eric

Dear Friends, No person can deny that sin is part of their life and Jesus talks a lot about sin. A Christian might even do a quick review of their life and believe that there have been no real major sins to confess or worry about, and yet Jesus talks a lot about sin. What is the disconnect for Christians?

EXTRA POINTS
TAIZ PRAYER WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7Join us in the Daily Mass Chapel from 6:30 7:30 PM for this peaceful, calm and spiritual hour of reflection through Prayer, Scripture and Song. This is a great way to enter into Lenten Prayer.

The disconnect isnt that Jesus talks about sin, it's that S T. P AT R I C K LENTEN Jesus talks a lot about the forgiveness of sin. His central MISSIONMark your calendars mission is to save people from their sins. He offers us reconciliation and for our Lenten Mission with the opportunity to be made whole after our sins have damaged us and Fr. Anthony Palazzola scheduled for others. Monday and Tuesday, March 19 and March 20 at 7:00 PM in the Church. If Jesus central mission was forgiveness of sins, then why do so many followers fail to fully comprehend the need to confess sins and be reconciled to the Father and the community? STATIONS OF THE CROSS, FRIDAYS OF LENTJoin us every Friday of Lent beginning at 6:00 PM in the Daily Mass Chapel for Stations of the Cross. Make this part of your Lenten practice! RECONCILIATION DURING L E N T E ver y W edn e sd a y during Lent, confessions will be heard in the Church from 6:30 7:30 PM. This provides five more weeks with the opportunity to celebrate this great sacrament. This is a time for all Catholics to be reminded that they are loved, forgiven and reconciled to God and the community. Priests are standing by for your presence!

Jesus, in the scriptures, offers a formula for his followers in dealing with sin in our lives. The first step is to call out our sin, which means to know that we commit sin, we are not separated or untouched by sin, and we must not be blind to our faults. Secondly, we are to name our sin. Once we name it and own our action, we see it for what it is and we no longer live in denial. Thirdly, we lament, which means we express sorrow, take ownership of the sinful act and know that lamenting is necessary on the path to forgiving ourselves. Sometimes it seems easier to know God forgives us, than to know we can forgive ourselves. During the Lenten season our priests will be available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation every Wednesday in the Church from 6:307:30 PM. Jesus does talk a lot about sin...the forgiveness of sin! Peace in Christ, Fr. Eric

Stewardship begins not with the needs of the parish but with the personal need of each of us to return to God a portion of our Time, Talent and Treasure. Managing what belongs to God, StewardshipGod, money and faithdo you get the connection? The earth is the Lords, and all it contains Psalm 24:1 means God owns everything and all blessings come from Him. We are to manage well those many blessings, and that includes money. It isnt our possession; its Gods and we hold it in trust. That Other 90% - Giving expresses the spiritual commitment of a willing and obedient heart. When giving beyond the tithe, we give out of our abundance, according to the principle taught in 2 Corinthians 8:14. Faith promiseA commitment to give a certain amount if God provides it. Its understood that if God doesnt provide the funds, youre not obligated to give them. PledgeAn absolute commitment to pay something. This type of giving is presumptuous, but a faith promise is scriptural. Non-cashTime, service, or gifts such as food, furniture and clothing. This may also include assets you bought at a low price that are now worth much more, stocks, bonds, real estateanything that grows in value. Never borrow in order to give. The Bible never shows God revealing His will in the lives of His people by using a loan. We can honor God with our sacrificial giving, but this should only be the result of a heart attitude and not a desire to impress others. God is more concerned about the attitude of our hearts in giving than the percentage or the amount given. Why Give? Giving to God reminds us who He is, who we are and what our relationship should be to those things He has allowed us to manage in His name. God returns and multiplies to those who give freely. And even though He is under no obligation to multiply our gifts, He does so because He loves us. It isnt the amount of money given that concerns God. After all, its all His. But, how the money is used is very important. God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed (2 Corinthians 9:1)

DONATION OF FENLON HOSPITALITY CENTERS OLD SIGNS You may have noticed we have new signage on our property. Our new signage was purchased through Sierra Signs. A side benefit to our new signage is that, in cooperation with Sierra Signs, our old Fenlon Hospitality Center signs were donated to Paz de Cristo at no cost, for use at their center. Sierra Signs graciously donated their services of labor and supplies to remove and reinstall these signs for Paz de Cristo, which is a homeless outreach center we have supported for many years with food and assistance for their evening meal service. They are thrilled with the sign which is something they could not have purchased themselves. The signs have already been placed and secured on the property and they will begin using them for information about their evening meal service, food box program hours and other important information. Thank you for your support of St. Patrick Catholic Community and through that support, your gift to other important outreach programs as well.

SOCIAL JUSTICE
To Stripe or Not to Stripe...All Disabled Parking Spaces are not Created Equally You have probably noticed all disabled parking spots have a sign and painted wheelchair logo on the parking surface. Have you also noticed that some disabled parking spaces have angled stripes (hash marks) to one side of the parking space? Do you know what these stripes are for? They allow additional space for cars, vans and trucks used by wheelchair users with adaptive equipment such as lifts, ramps and other assistive devices. Without this additional space the wheelchair user is not able to exit their vehicle. The striped area also allows additional space for wheelchair/scooter users and those using large walkers without adaptive vehicle equipment. They need more space to maneuver the device to the side of the vehicle to exit and enter their vehicle. Please remember only people legally permitted to park in a disabled parking space are those with a disabled parking plate or placard and the person for whom the plate or placard is assigned is present in the vehicle...no borrowing! If you are entitled to a disabled parking space and your circumstances permit having a choice of which disabled spot to select, please consider using a space without the additional stripes allowing folks with adaptive equipment the opportunity to park, and exit and enter their vehicle and attend Mass the same as the rest of the community. In fact, the non striped spots in the parking lot are closer to the Church than the striped spots near Fenlon Hospitality Center! Please remember parishioners with adaptive devices have no choice; they must use a striped parking spot. Imagine arriving to Mass only to find you cannot get out of your vehicle? That is the case if all the wide spaces are taken (even when arriving very early!) However, please also allow ample time to arrive in order to secure a disabled parking space, regardless of your needs. We want to assure St. Patrick is a place of hospitality, so please help us utilize our disabled parking spaces with consideration to those who need them. We are now in the midst of the Lenten Season that is such an important time of reflection and prayer. This is also a time to consider making a financial donation to the great work of Habitat for Humanity. Make sure you take out your Habitat House bank and look at the Building a Habitat Home Lenten Calendar. This is a great family activity that helps focus your thoughts, prayers and actions on the need for decent affordable housing. In addition to the coins and bills, you can also slip a check into the Habitat bank. Our work continues: we need 25 construction volunteers and people to provide lunch for our 27th house.
