INTRODUCTION
On the job training or OJT is one method by which students is given a chance to apply the theories and computations that they have learned from the school. It also helps the students to acquire relevant knowledge and skills by performing in actual work setting. Colleges and universities require their students to undergo such training within a specific number of hours as part of the curriculum. For the students, an OJT or internship program provides opportunities to go through the actual methodologies of a specific job using the real tools, equipments and documents. In effect, the workplace becomes a development venue for a student trainee to learn more about his chosen field and practice what he has learn from academy. On the other hand, an effective OJT program also benefits the companies who accept trainees. First OJT or intern provides additional manpower for a lesser labor cost than a regular employee. Most of them are all eager to learn the ropes so chances are high that they will cooperate. Employers can use this internship strategy as a method in recruiting new employees. Since the trainer or the supervisor can follow the trainees progress, he can gauge based on performance, behavior and attitude if the trainee will make a good recruit after the completion of his internship. OJTs can bring fresh ideas into the organization. Given the opportunity to speak their minds freely and without fear, they maybe able to contribute significantly in brainstorming sessions or research and eventually help improve the organizations productivity. While training the interns, employers are in fact also teaching their employees to process of guiding the trainees stretches their patience, develops teaching skills and makes them more sensitive to the needs 1

and mind set of the younger generation. The course of supervision also teaches them how to share what they know and be receptive to questions. Hence, the internship also becomes an avenue in training for future managers of the company. Accommodating on-the-job trainees can truly be beneficial not only to the trainees but also to the companies that provide opportunities for this type of learning. There is wisdom in the front lines. Such training can be an investment that will be valuable to the company later on. This is also why trainees should take their internship seriously as it can become a powerful tool and possibly even source of recommendation when they take that big lift from being students to career professionals.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

It was on October 18, 1973 when Southern Nueva Ecija Electric Cooperative formerly known as (SONEECO) energized ten towns namely Penaranda, General Tinio, Sta. Rosa, Jaen, San Antonio, Gapan and San Isidro. Unofficially that is, Gapan Electric Cooperation, serving then the municipalities of Gapan and San Isidro became the nucleus of the cooperative when the management of the said cooperation was taken over by NEA headed by Engr. Amado T. Corea on October 24, 1973 and the Napocor re-energized the electric system of the two towns namely, Gapan and San Isidro, then it was immediately

followed by organization of District Electrification Committees and the Board of directors followed.

On November 24, 1973, after the month long hectic preparation, the incorporation and registration of SONEECO ensued and the historic event was held at the Bulwagang Plaridel, PRRM, San Leonardo Nueva Ecija. The occasion was

officials.

The

incorporators were rev. Msgr. Jesus B. Estonillo, representing San Leonardo, Dr. Tomas Borja, representative of Gapan, Mr. Eduardo G. Esquivel, representing Jaen, Engr. Rodrigo

Villanueva, representing San Isidro, Mr. Felipe I. Dayao, Sr. representative of Sta. Rosa, Mr. Isidro Manuel, representing Gen. Tinio, and Mr. Joaquin Padilla, representative of

Penaranda.

Then, on January 4, 1974 the official take over the electric system in the eight (8) towns covered by the coop took place. Thereafter, on February 2, 1974, the loan

agreement in the amount of P13, 276,000.00 was signed including the officials turnover of the private electric system. All these events took place inside the PRRM compound in San Leonardo. The National Electrification Administrator, Alfredo Juinio, came as the guest speaker.

On September 1, 1975, the electric system of Cabiao was absorbed by the coop. CAROLUS of Quezon followed last march 1, 1976.

Rehabilitation of electric lines commonly known as the installation of backbone system by the EUREKA Engineering firm was affected. The cost on installation reaches the tune of P848, 847.25. The backbone system will mean improve

voltage and A-1 reliability. Moreover, we have met the high standards set forth by the National Electrification

Administration, the implementing arm of President Ferdinand E. Marcos in rural electrification.

Likewise, we have acquired, earlier a seven (7) hectare lot at Bo. Malapit, San Isidro, Nueva Ecija at cost of P349, 770.00 where the permanent headquarter was erected and blessed on December 18, 1977 with Deputy Administrator Bobby de Ocampo and wife as guest.

NEECO I also set aside as loan of P450, 000.00 to the Nueva Ecija Furniture and industries, Inc. which is now in full operation in Penaranda, Nueva Ecija. NEFUR manufactures assorted quality furniture. The industry somehow eases the unemployment problem in the community.

A local manager was appointed to replace Engr. Correa. He was the late Cesar G. Lamson who died unexpectedly in June 1978. From then, a number of NEA Managers were assigned to manage the cooperative. Engr. Hernando Esguerra took over the management after the death OGM Lamson. Rehabilitation projects and installation of the backbone

system to the remotest barangays were affected.

In September, 1981, the area being served by NEECO I was divided and was taken over by NEECO II leaving only five (5) towns to the cooperative. In 1986, the National Power Corporation sent Mr. Floro Fresnosa, but the Board of

Directors refused to accept him. He stayed at NEECO I for only one month and on the first quarter of 1987, Engr. Esguerra was replaced by another NEA man in the person of Atty. Rodolfo Felicio. Frequent power disconnection by NAPOCOR. In 1988, NEA assigned Johnny Irabon to replace Atty. Rodolfo Felicio. In October, 1989, Mr. Irabon was replced by Mr. Evangelito Estaca, also from NEA. It was during Mr. Estacas term when union problems were resolved resulting to the rehabilitation of the cooperative.

Despite employees protest, on January 20, 1990, Mr. Estaca was recalled and replaced by Engr. Alberto Guiang also from NEA. Simultaneously, Engr. Guiang was also assigned to manage NEECO II. On September 8, 1990. Engr. Patricio dela Pena was assigned as Project Supervisor/Acting General

Manager replacing Engr. Guiang. It was also during Engr. Dela Penas term when NEA dissolved the Board of directors to give way to Engr. Dela Penas management strategies.

On February 1, 1993, NEA decided again to replace Engr. Dela Pena, assigning a CPA in the person of Mr. Efren I. Bati. However, elections were held to form again another set of Board of Directors Mr. Batis term resolved several

management disputes resulting to coops ability to settle part of its overdue amortization to NEA. However, Mr. Batis

management style resulted to clashes with the Board of Directors and on August 19, 1994, the Board without NEAS approval decided to replace him with a coop Department

Manager in the person of Mr. Danilo F. Tan. This act of the Board caused division among coop employees for Mr. Tan terminated eight (8) employees and appointed employees who were not qualified to replace them. Because of the chaotic condition of the coop, NEA decided to advertise for a local manager to the cooperative and on January 2, 1995, NEA appointed Mr. Gil Salazar as local manager.

resulting from Mr. Tans previous appointment. On November 24, 1995, the board assigned Mr. Gregorio T. Velarde, a coop Division Manger to act as Office-in-Charge and at the same time suspending Mr. Gil Salalzar. On December 1995 NEA but a group of coop employees who were also responsible for the ouster of Mr. Bati illegally took-over the management and coop premises of the cooperative on January 28, 1996. The Board, the employees were also divided into two (2) groups supporting two (2) Officers-in-Charge, Engr. Orlando Trinidad and Gregorio Velarde.

Mr.

employees who supported Engr. Trinidads illegal management were dismissed.

It was very slow road to rehabilitation and because the coop is now facing foreclosure by NEA on May 2, 1997, NEA replaced Mr. Velarde by assigning another NEA man in the person of Engr. Jose H. Seguban, Jr. as Project Manager. He is assisted Member by three (3) major functional (MSD), activities Finance namely Services

The organization has a total work force of 230 as o December 31, 1997. As of the same date there were about 45,046 existing number of consumers. Actual ratio of

customer per employee is 275:1 which is 32% higher than the established minimum national average level of at last 170 customers per employee hired. This level is expected as soon as the ECs operational status improves.

Engr. Seguban was again replaced by Engr. Ferdinand Pamintuan as Actg. General Manager of the cooperative

effective February 2, 1999. Who is also a NEA Manager? During his term we had the Consumer Relation and Values Enhancement Seminar on April 27-30 1999, for the employees to develop their personality Some especially on dealing the with

system loss for en (10) moths is 35.408, and employees attitude improved. However, on October 6, 1999, he was recalled and replaced and by Mr. John Catral, a NEA man with finance background.

For his program, Mr. Catral started first a dialogue with local government officials of NEECO I coverage area, with the Congresswoman of 4 t h District of Nueva Ecija, Julita L. Villareal and NEA Officials on December 28, 1999. To date, the MSD is doing similar dialogue within the Municipal and Barangay levels. Support from the religious sector was also sought by management. The dialogue resulted to the assignment of a MANAGEMENT TASK FORCE from

NEA. On February 1, 2000, the Task Force arrived to assist the operations and support the Acting General Manager, John Catral. The Task Force was composed of Decoroso Padilla as Institutional Assist, Mr. Alexander M. Conde as Financial Assist, and Engr. Faustino A, Betaizar, Engr. Wilfredo C. Bucsit, and Engr. Bienvenido S. Marasigan as Technical Assist.

Mr. Catrals management style did not adapt well to the cooperative. System loss continued to hamper coop

operations even further resulting to power disconnection. Despite support from local government officials, operations did not improved resulting to the recall of the whole team due to starting employees unrest.

Work Experience and Values Learned

Learning by doing, this is the on-the-job training mainly strives for. This, as well, is the preeminent thing the students have taken advantage of from the company they applied in of which is the Nueva Ecija Electric Cooperative 1, which never failed the students belief that there is where they could gain the necessary learning from an OJT. The NEECO 1 personnel, particularly the manager taught the students more than just about the technical skills but furthermore in developing the appropriate attitude in providing service to the clients. The manager has demonstrated some example of ways how to deal with different type of costumer behaviors. The manager, also, shared her inspiring previous experiences in the jobs to serve as guides in taking the students path to success in their prospective quests. The technicians of the company are very benevolent in sharing their knowledge and skills to the students. They have that positive belief that accepting OJTs is having a responsibility of molding them into better beings as they came out from the working area.

Examinations were given formally and informally to measure the students skills and knowledge. A good way for them to identify the students doors of improvements and points of appreciations. They

allowed the trainees to experience the real life works in a job like assisting clients concerns should it be in the company itself or even outside. Allowing the trainees to interact with the clients is one way of their tests too, which improves the trainees confidence. The companys personnel have divulged the trainees that the secret to a happy job is maintaining the spirit of family in the working area between the personnel themselves and with the clients. They always share even the simplest fun they discover in the internet if they know it will bring big happiness for every one having something to laugh about. Each of the personnel possesses their naturally different sense of humor which keeps the working area away from getting boring despite the fact of their very little number. On the other hand, the personnel observe professionalism and respect to each other and to every client, all the time even though they maintain drollness in communicating. All of these and the learning of the students from the school combined probably made them absolutely maturely different persons that have increased their self-esteems to brace them in taking chances ahead.
