Alternative energy is a general term that refers to any source of usable energy intended to replace fuel sources without the undesired consequences of the replaced fuels. It is energy that is produced without the undesirable consequences of the burning of fossil fuels, such as high carbon dioxide emissions, which is considered to be the major contributing factor of global warming. Alternative, or renewable energy, sources show significant promise in helping to reduce the amount of toxins that are by-products of energy use. Not only do they protect against harmful byproducts, but using alternative energy helps to preserve many of the natural resources that we currently use as sources of energy. In its various forms, it is energy derived directly from biomass, biogas, solar, wind, ocean, hydropower, geothermal resources, and nuclear resources.

The use of renewable energy plays an ever increasing role in Malaysia in meeting the requirements of our energy security and the effects of climate change due to the greenhouse gases emission. How much of each of these energy resources are available in Malaysia and has its potential been successfully tapped for energy utilization? Do we have the technology to tap its potential? What is the overall percentage contribution of alternate energy against the national power demand in Malaysia? Will alternate energy be a significant contributor to national power demand by 2020? Discuss and address challenges faced by Malaysia in all these energy issues.
