CHALLENGING THE BINARIES

Centre for the Study of Literacies International Conference

29th - 30th June 2012 School of Education University of Shefeld S10 2JA

CALL FOR PAPERS FURTHER DETAILS

This conference will explore binaries which have emerged through New Literacies research. Some of these have been the lenses which have framed research questions or emerged through analysis. This conference will extend and challenge the discussions around binary constructs. Examples include Home/School; Real/Virtual; Online/ Ofine; Formal/Informal; Literate/Illiterate; Old/New; Academic/non-academic; Autonomous/Ideological; Global/Local; Digital Immigrant/Digital Native. There may be others which presenters will wish to draw upon. We are interested in papers which consider the nature of either one or both halves of a binary concept. To what extent are the dichotomies helpful, limiting or challenging? Presenters may also wish to present methodological papers or purely theoretical pieces exploring particular binaries or the concept of binaries in literacy research. We hope that the conference will provide an environment for debate and where delegates will feel comfortable in talking about their research. Our conference theme is a way of getting discussions started.
