Wash hands. Check the diet card for: name of resident, the diet order, special instructions, and allergies. Make sure the food on try matches the information diet card. Remove tray from food cart and make sure all necessary items are there - silverware, napkins, etc. Take tray to the residents room as quickly as possible to ensure that food is served at the appropriate temperatures. Knock and pause before entering the residents room. Introduce self. Verify the residents name by checking the armband against the name printed on the diet card. Explain procedure. Lower side rail if permitted. Raise head of bed to semi Fowlers position for resident or assist them to sit in chair. Place tray on overbed table in front of the resident. Remove plate covers. Arrange dishes and silverware so that they are easy for the resident to use. Arrange the plate so that the main entree is closest to the resident. Observe and provide whatever assistance the resident needs by cutting meat, buttering bread, pouring liquids, and opening packets, use adaptive device per residents individual needs. Encourage resident to do as much as possible for himself or herself. Make sure the resident does not need more assistance before leaving the room. Return to residents room periodically during mealtime to check on residents progress. Encourage the resident to eat all of diet served. Talk with the resident and encourage socialization with other residents.

Remove tray when resident is finished. Push overbed table away from in front of resident and position it alongside the resident. Return side rail to original position.
ENDING STEPS: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. Clean and return equipment and supplies. Remove gloves, if wearing. Position resident comfortably. Place call light within reach. Lower bed to safe position for the resident. Leave room neat. Wash hands. Document. Report abnormal findings to licensed nurse.
