Metro/Regional ROADM Platform Building the Photonic Freeway

The market-leading FLASHWAVE 7500 Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (ROADM) provides three next-generation configurations for flexible network topologies including the industrys most powerful multidegree hub configuration. The FLASHWAVE 7500 Wavelength Selective Switch (WSS)-based product family enables optical mesh network architectures. With optical mesh, metro/regional carriers are shaping the DWDM transport network of the future and building the Photonic Freeway. The FLASHWAVE 7500 WSS platform incorporates advanced, field-proven photonic technologies, and operational innovations like Generalized Multiprotocol Label Switching (GMPLS) control plane intelligence. These innovative features provide unprecedented provisioning accuracy and service delivery speed to ensure fast and uninterrupted revenue and better customer retention, thus higher profitability for the years to come. The FLASHWAVE 7500 platform's inherent operational benefits improve metro and regional networks by: Creating new service and revenue opportunities with a converged and scalable network ROADM Powered by WSS Increasing margins by eliminating redundant nodes while Multidegree Hubbing & Mesh providing demand-driven ring and mesh networks Zero Impact ROADM Operations Streamlining operations with simple service activation and GMPLS Intelligence optical performance management Precise Service Provisioning Securing future profitability through simplified network planning and a flexible, modular architecture that supports any service, anywhere, anytime This scalable platform also features tunable lasers and automatic amplifier gain control to eliminate the time consuming, manual adjustments required on other DWDM products. The FLASHWAVE 7500 system actively monitors power levels on each channel, automatically adjusting and tuning the levels to maintain optimal performance. To meet changing network service and traffic patterns, the FLASHWAVE 7500 ROADM switch fabric allows any single wavelength, any number of wavelengths, and any combination of non-adjacent wavelengths to be dropped at any node. Advanced Optical Line Cards (OLCs) provide efficient on-ramps, supporting the provisioning of traditional and emerging business services such as Video on Demand (VOD), transparent wavelength services and enterprise data transport across the metro/regional photonic network. The FLASHWAVE 7500 multidegree hubbing capability allows traffic grooming across multiple ring or mesh networks and allows a single device to groom multiple networks, resulting in substantial capital and operational savings. Wavelengths can be provisioned across a network in minutes rather than the days required on typical metro DWDM systems.

Common DWDM Family

The FLASHWAVE 7500 WSS-based metro DWDM product family consists of three configurations: The FLASHWAVE 7500 WSS Hub System (40-channel) The FLASHWAVE 7500 WSS ROADM System (40-channel) The FLASHWAVE 7500 ROADM System (32-channel) These three application-driven platform variations provide optimal solutions for even the most demanding network applications. Choosing cost-effective variants of the same FLASHWAVE 7500 platform limits downtime, improves efficiency, and eliminates the confusion of having different product families for different network functions. Common transponder units (often with custom combinations of field-replaceable optical modules) reduce engineering and sparing costs. Common software, with a familiar look and feel for all operations, ensures that technicians only need to be trained once to operate and maintain all FLASHWAVE 7500 platform configurations.

Flexibility and Service Velocity

The optical core of the FLASHWAVE 7500 platform is based on an advanced WSS, delivering the most flexible wavelength routing and topology available today. Advanced control plane intelligence, coupled with sophisticated optical self-tuning features, allows rapid end-to-end service activation. The platforms redundant network processor architecture assures continuous network availability. With its highly flexible modular architecture, the FLASHWAVE 7500 system cost-effectively meets todays metro and regional bandwidth requirements for up to 40 wavelengths, 24 nodes and 1000 km in distance.

FLASHWAVE 7500 WSS Hub

The distinctive ability of the FLASHWAVE 7500 WSS Hub System to interconnect multiple, architecturally diverse topologies, transforms a carriers metro network into a unified, easily managed, demand-driven architecture. The multidegree hubbing capability supports up to eight physical paths from a single Network Element (NE). Equivalent to four ROADM nodes, a single FLASHWAVE 7500 WSS Hub System provides transparent wavelength routing from one network to the other. The platforms GMPLS control plane complements the multidegree hubbing feature by providing a fully automated A-to-Z provisioning capability across multiple networks. By integrating multidegree hubbing, GMPLS control plane intelligence and tunable lasers, the FLASHWAVE 7500 WSS Hub System dramatically increases provisioning accuracy and service delivery speed. By eliminating the multiple transponders and intra-office optical and electrical connections usually required between traditional ROADM NEs, carriers save significant CAPEX and OPEX. The FLASHWAVE 7500 WSS Hub System supports fully automated topology discovery, inventory and path provisioning to simplify circuit provisioning and further reduce the operating cost of metro networks. The FLASHWAVE 7500 WSS Hub System offers fast service delivery with transparent interconnection, fully automated provisioning between rings and mesh networks, and: Saves CAPEX by eliminating back-to-back WDM nodes and manual optical patch panels Saves OPEX by reducing human intervention in the entire Operations, Administration, Maintenance and Provisioning (OAM&P) process Improves service margins with faster service delivery, better network availability and excellent customer retention

This fully automated add/drop reconfiguration capability dramatically reduces both OPEX and CAPEX. The FLASHWAVE 7500 WSS ROADM System achieves up to 100% add/drop capacity without impacting existing services by combining the innovative WSS technology with tunable lasers and continuously optimized optical amplification systems. Other competitive advantages found in the FLASHWAVE 7500 WSS ROADM System include: Zero impact reconfiguration Nodal upgrade from the FLASHWAVE 7500 WSS ROADM System to FLASHWAVE 7500 WSS Hub System Capacity upgrade to support transport of up to 40 wavelengths Independent wavelength add/drop Support for 40 Gbps transmission, maximizing the return on initial investment End-to-end provisioning with GMPLS-based control plane intelligence, streamlining operations with simple service activation and optical performance management Multiservice OLCs and redundant network processors, delivering both traditional and emerging network services with the highest possible network availability and survivability

FLASHWAVE 7500 Hub and ROADM Network Application

FLASHWAVE 7500 ROADM

A compact ROADM for mid-size applications, the FLASHWAVE 7500 ROADM System is designed to address the space constraints of crowded metro Central Offices (COs). Fully interoperable with the FLASHWAVE 7500 WSS Hub System and the FLASHWAVE 7500 WSS ROADM System, the FLASHWAVE 7500 ROADM System provides a full function, lowcost, compact-footprint option. The main 19-inch Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (OADM) shelf supports up to six line cards in addition to the common operation and transmission support cards. Initial deployment can be supported by a single OADM shelf for Flexible Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (FOADM) or point-to-point applications. Add modular optical switch units in the main OADM shelf to enable ROADM capabilities. As capacity grows, OLC shelves, supporting twelve transponders each, can be easily added without interrupting network operations. The FLASHWAVE 7500 ROADM System supports all service types available on the other FLASHWAVE 7500 systems, including Ethernet, video, and traditional SONET, as well as direct connection of narrowband optics from any ITU-compliant sources.

Advanced Optical Technologies

The FLASHWAVE 7500 ROADM incorporates the industrys most advanced optical technologies including a WSS-based optical switch fabric, full band tunable lasers, multiport, multirate Flexponder units and an intelligent control plane. The WSS-based switch fabric provides lower optical loss than other optical switch technologies. Lower loss contributes to larger network sizes and more network nodes per network. WSS technology also allows the FLASHWAVE 7500 WSS Hub System to act as a multidegree hub node that can support multiple converged networks. No amplifier or network changes are required as 40 Gbps channels are added to the FLASHWAVE 7500 ROADM. You can further reduce expenses by implementing the full C-band tunable narrowband optics and SFP-based interfaces, which allow all ITU-T wavelengths and client connections for a particular service to be supported by a single OLC.

Comprehensive Services Support

The FLASHWAVE 7500 system supports a comprehensive set of client services, such as SONET, Ethernet and video, over multifunctional OLCs. Each OLC provides PM of the incoming signal, converts the signal to a specific narrowband wavelength using tunable optics, and provides communication to remote equipment for OAM&P purposes. Specifically designed to accommodate fluctuating network demand, FLASHWAVE 7500 Flexponder units provide aggregation and grooming capability for both SONET and Ethernet services.

Common Optical Line Cards

The FLASHWAVE 7500 platform supports common OLCs for all configurations, including 19- and 23-inch shelves. This ensures 100% interoperability among all configurations, as well as service continuity over various network architectures. The network services supported include Ethernet (transparent or Generic Framing Procedure (GFP)), SONET, Storage Area Network (SAN), Video (analog or digital/HD) and transparent wavelength services. Only five multifunction transponder types are needed to support a wide array of client services from 100 Mbps to 10 Gbps. Multiport muxponders allow up to four OC-48 connections or eight Gigabit Ethernet connections to be multiplexed onto a single wavelength at 10 Gbps. The innovative Flexponder unit incorporates an STS-1 switch fabric to provide Multiservice Provisioning Platform (MSPP) functionality before placing traffic on a wavelength. This unit lets carriers groom incoming services such as Ethernet, Packet over SONET (PoS) and SONET, to reduce interface costs and the overall cost of transport. With full support for SONET protection, traffic grooming, Data Communications Channel (DCC) and a full range of Performance Monitoring (PM) features, the Flexponder unit efficiently terminates multiple subtending MSPP rings on a single pair of units. Flexponders eliminate the need to subtend MSPPs in the CO, thus reducing capital cost and delivering better service visibility. OLC sparing is independent of line card interfaces. All interfaces support either tunable laser or Small Form-factor Pluggable (SFP) units, which reduces sparing cost and simplifies troubleshooting and repair processes.

Easy Management and Administration

End-to-end network management and operations is provided by the NETSMART 1500 Element Management System (EMS) and NETSMART 500 Graphical User Iinterface (GUI). Aided by the intelligence from GMPLS-based control plane technology, these NETSMART network management tools lower costs by consolidating and automating operations such as A-Z provisioning, auto-discovery, alarm monitoring, control, remote software upgrades and database backups.
