Guidelines for Wearing Personal Protective Equipment: 9.

Provide appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to all employees who may beexposed to blood or other potentially infectious material. Such equipment mus t include examgloves, utility gloves, gowns, mas s, and goggles. 10. Use appropriate personal protective equipment during any tas that involves the potential for s in contact with any of the following substances: ? Blood ? Urine/feces ? Semen ? Tears ? Saliva ? Vaginal secretions ? Other bodily fluids11.The Community is responsible for the cleaning or disposal of all PPE, as well as the repair and replacement of PPE, at no cost to the empl oyee. 12. Remove all protective garments penetrated by blood or other potentially infectio us materialsas soon as possible. Employees must remove all PPE prior to leaving the wor area, andmust place the PPE in the designated container(s) for storage, washing, decontamination, or disposal. 13. All employees are required to use personal protective equipment as appropriate. If anemployee is not using PPE when indicated, as him/her to do so. Continued f ailure to usePPE will result in disciplinary action. Disposable Gloves: 14.Disposable gloves must be worn when it is li ely that an employee may have ha nd contactwith blood or other potentially infectious materials, mucous membranes , non-intact s in, andwhen handling or touching potentially contaminated items o r surfaces. Thus, disposablegloves must be worn when staff: ? Touch blood or bodily fluids ? Handle items or surfaces soiled with blood or bodily fluids ? Handle soiled laundry ? Clean a tenant s apartment (in this case utility gloves may be used instead of dis posablegloves). 15. The Community must provide hypoallergenic gloves, glove liners or powderless glo ves for those employees who are allergic to standard gloves. Replace disposable gloves as soon as possible when contaminated with blood or ot her potentially infectious material, or if they are torn, punctured, or when th eir ability to functionas a barrier is compromised.17.Disposable gloves should n ever be washed or decontaminated for re-use (utility gloves may be decontaminate

d as long as they show no signs of wear).18.Staff should follow these guidelines when removing disposable gloves: ? Immediately and thoroughly wash your hands after removing the gloves. ? If the gloves are contaminated with any body fluids (e.g., urine, feces, blood, vomit, etc.),the gloves may be disposed of in a tenant s apartment ONLY if the tra sh is immediatelyremoved from the apartment and disposed of in a covered trash c ontainer. Otherwise,dispose of the used gloves in a sealed plastic bag and remov e the bag from the apartment.( An exception to this may be made if a tenant has a lined and covered container used todispose of incontinent supplies. In this situation, used gloves may be di sposed of in thiscontainer.) ? If gloves are saturated (i.e., dripping) with blood or other potentially infecti ous materials,the gloves should be placed in a secured plastic bag and disposed of immediately in a biohazard container. ? If the gloves are dry (i.e., are not contaminated with any body fluids), the glo ves may beturned inside out, wrapped in themselves, and disposed of in the tenan t s wastebas et. Guidelines for Wearing Other Personal Protective Equipment: 19. Other types of personal protective equipment (i.e., gowns, mas s, goggles) shoul d be used bystaff if soiling or splattering is li ely to occur while performing a tas or cleaning up a spill. 20. Place used disposable gowns, mas s, or other types of personal protective equipm ent in a plastic bag at the place of removal (e.g., the tenant s apartment) and pl aced in a trashcontainer immediately.21.If used article(s) of disposable persona l protective equipment is saturated (i.e., dripping) with blood or other potenti ally infectious materials, the article(s) must be placed in a red bag andmust be immediately disposed of in the biohazard container. 22. Re-usable mas s, goggles, face shields, utility gloves, or other non-disposable personal protective equipment that comes into contact with blood or other potent ially infectiousmaterials must be decontaminated as soon as feasible after use w ith an appropriategermicidal disinfectant. House eeping & Laundry Policy and Procedure Manual Page 6 of 28 2000-2005 Vista S enior Living, Inc.All Rights Reserved If an article cannot be immediately decontaminated, it should be placed in a pla stic bag,labeled as potentially hazardous (i.e., either using a biohazard stic e r or placing it in a red bag), stored in the soiled laundry room and decontamina ted as soon as possible. Dispose of the bag used to temporarily store the articl e(s) until decontamination in the biohazard box. 23. Discard non-disposable personal protective equipment if it is crac ed, peeling, torn, punctured, exhibits other signs of deterioration or when its ability to fu nction as a barrier iscompromised. 24. Staff must wear a surgical mas if he/she has a cold and has close tenant contac t, or if atenant has an infectious condition that requires use of a surgical mas . When Handling Laundry: 25.Staff should wear disposable gloves when handling laundry. In addition, when handlingsoiled laundry (i.e., laundry that is wet with any body fluid such as ur ine, feces, vomit, blood,etc.), staff must also: ? Wear a protective gown, goggles, and/or mas as appropriate if splattering or so

iling isli ely. ? Bag the soiled laundry in a red bag at the place of use (e.g., the tenant s apartm ent) andimmediately ta e it to the soiled laundry room. ? Handle the laundry as little as possible. ? Wash the soiled laundry immediately (if this is not possible the soiled laundry must bestored in a secure plastic bag in a separate, covered container that is l abeled for soiledlaundry in the soiled laundry room until it can be washed).26.W hen washing soiled laundry (laundry that is wet with any body fluid such as urin e, feces,vomit, blood, etc.) staff should: ? Ensure that the soiled laundry is washed separately from all other laundry ? Rinse the soiled laundry in the hopper before placing it in the washing machine ? Wash the soiled laundry with a disinfectant and on the hottest water setting When Performing Routine House eeping Tas s: 27. Staff should always wear gloves when providing house eeping services in tenant a partments(these may be utility gloves instead of disposable gloves). When Cleaning up Contaminated Surfaces: 28. Clean and decontaminate using an appropriate germicidal disinfectant immediately or assoon as is feasible all surfaces (e.g., counters, floors, carpets) that co me into contact with blood or body fluids. Decontaminate bins, pails, and cans on a regular basis and whenever visibly cont aminatedwith blood or potentially infectious materials. 30. Place any disposable items used to clean contaminated surfaces (e.g., paper towe ls) in a plastic bag at the place of use (e.g., the tenant s apartment) and dispos e of them in a trashcontainer immediately. If items are saturated (i.e., drippin g) with blood or other potentiallyinfectious materials, put the item(s) in a red biohazard bag and disposed of in a biohazardcontainer. 31. Launder non-disposable items used to clean contaminated surfaces (e.g., cloth to wels,sponges, brushes, etc.) following procedures for soiled laundry or clean an d decontaminateimmediately or as soon as feasible with a germicidal disinfectant . If the item cannot beimmediately decontaminated, place it in a red biohazard b ag, store in the soiled laundryroom, and decontaminate as soon as possible. 32. Any bro en glassware that may be contaminated with blood or other body fluids sh ould not be pic ed up by hand. Rather, tongs, forceps or a brush and dustpan mus t be used. 33. Clean large blood spills or other spills of other potentially infectious materia ls with materialsin a Spill Kit, in accordance with instructions included with t he Spill Kit. If a spill it is notavailable, the following procedures should be followed: ? Put on gloves (utility gloves may be needed). Other personal protective equipmen t, suchas a gown and/or face protection should be worn if soiling and/or splatte ring is li ely. ? Wipe up the spill with dry paper towels.

? Disinfect the area with a germicidal disinfectant according to the manufacturer si nstructions. ? Wipe up the disinfectant and clean the disinfected area according to the manufac turer sinstructions. ? Place the gloves and paper towels in a red biohazard bag and secure the opening of the bag. ? Dispose of the red bag in the biohazard container. ? Wash hands appropriately. When Cleaning Contaminated Equipment: 34.Equipment which comes into contact with blood or bodily fluids must be cleane d anddecontaminated using an appropriate germicidal disinfectant immediately or as soon asfeasible. 35. If the equipment cannot be immediately decontaminated, place it in a red plastic biohazard bag (or bag labeled with a biohazard stic er), stored in the soiled l aundry room anddecontaminated as soon as possible. The bag used to temporarily s tore the equipment untildecontamination must be disposed of in the biohazard box . If the equipment needs to be sent off-site for servicing or shipping, the equipm ent must first be decontaminated. If decontaminating all or part of a particular piece of equipment is not possible, attach a label to the equipment stating whi ch portions remain contaminated. Informall affected staff, the servicing represe ntative, and/or manufacturer, as appropriate, of the possible contamination.
