Measure

Remembering Describe the relationships between grams & kilograms; millimetres & Centimetres; millilitres & Litres. Explain the difference between perimeter & area, and indicate when each should be used. Construct a crossword (with clues) using different types of measurement (metric only).

Time/Temp.
Match 12 hour and 24 hour time. Make a clock showing how they are similar.

Weight
Make a chart showing different standards of weight units.

Volume/Capacity
List 20 class or household items that have volume.

Length/Area
Make a list of all the different types of ways to measure length.

Graphs
Describe the difference between a bar, line & circle graph. Draw an example of each. Find out information on graphs, who uses them? Where do the come from? What other types are there? Make a 3D model of at least 2 different types of graphs.

Understanding

Compare Centigrade, C and Fahrenheit, F. Compare differences, like temp F and C at freezing, etcetera. Construct a working paper & cardboard model of a thermometer.

Investigate why we use different types of measurement (cm, ml, kg). Write

Make a diagram of everything that you do over a 24 hour period. Show times and activities. Judge who has the fastest time out of a group of people in class in a running race by timing them. Report results & evaluate findings Invent a pocket sized time machine with a working time dial(s) where you can choose Sec. Min. Hrs., Years, decades, Centuries, and millennia.

Draw different items of size & weight, explain which standard is the best to use for each item. One item for each standard. Take photos of several objects and estimate their weight. Present photos, estimates & an explanation about each estimate in a report. Make a survey of what everybody in the class weighs and compare it to another class. Discuss why your weight is different on Earth, The Moon, Jupiter & the Sun.

Explain why different shapes can have the same capacity.

Choose a page in your Maths Practice Book that has to do with Length or Area. Complete, Show all working out, correct & present in your portfolio. Find items of the same length & draw them into groups on paper. Make three groups of different sizes.

Applying

Make at least 4 different 3D models of the same volume using blocks. Photograph or sketch & present showing the different models and what volume amount you used. Investigate the reason why during Summer time in Sweden people sell strawberries by the litre. Is this an accurate way to measure strawberries? Why? Choose an object that you do not know the volume of (like a jug or pot) find out its volume. Make a small journal of the steps you took. Design, develop & draw a new set of designer vases or bowls of different sizes and volumes e.g. 500ml, 1l, 5l. Explain why you chose the designs and capacity.

Analysing

Debate or argue the advantages of the metric system over the imperial system.

Develop & make a poster selling a house, include information about the house, price, who to call, etc. Show lengths for things like walls & areas for things like room size. The way to work out area has just been invented & you are a journalist reporting on the story for the local newspaper. Write an article on it. Construct a detailed map of an area like; the class, your room or lounge room. Show the lengths of all major objects.

Make a jig-saw puzzle of a graph.

Evaluating

Rate the 3 types of graphs from best to worse & explain why.

Creating

Design a measurement book. Include all relationships & types of measurement, include metric and imperial as well.

Write a song or poem about weight. It should help people understand weight better

Design & develop a new type of graph that is easy to read & holds all the needed information, show an example.

Measurement Assessment
Over the next few weeks in Maths you will be working on a large assessment for measurement. On the other side of the page you will find a matrix with many boxes with activities in them. For this assessment you will need to complete and present you work in a folder ready to display. Your work and folder will be developed and presented to a high quality and standard.

What you have to do Complete one activity in each column (rows going down), six (6) activities in total At least three (3) of the activities that you do have to be taken from the grey area All activities have to be completed and handed up on or before the due date in a folder of some sort (if you dont have one ask for one). The due date of the assessment is Friday 23rd of March (week 12) Your assessment will be marked using the rubric attached
