Introduction
The Journal Quality List is published primarily to assist academics to target papers at journals of an appropriate standard. We would be concerned if the list were used for staff evaluation purposes in a mechanistic way. Whilst every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the Journal Quality List, we recommend that it be checked before used extensively for evaluation purposes. The editor will not be held responsible for omissions or errors.

Published as Tahai & Meyer (1999), Strategic Management Journal, vol. 20, pp. 279-296. The list attempts to determine which management journals have the greatest influence on the field of management. Uses a dataset of 1275 articles published in 17 source journals (the top 17 management journals in the SSCI) over a 2-year period. Journals that are cited most frequently are those that have had the most influence on the current literature (i.e., revealed preference). Journals are ranked by citation frequency (1= most cited, 65 = least cited). WIE 2001 WU Wien Journal Rating 2001

List developed by the Wirtschaftsuniversitt Wien (Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration). VHB 2003 Assoc. of Professors of Business in German speaking countries

A ranking developed on behalf of the Association of University Professors of Business in German speaking countries (Verband der Hochschullehrer fr Betriebswirtschaft - VHB). Based on a highly interactive and individualised survey distributed via the Internet, 651 professors and university researchers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland assessed the scientific quality of both articles and review processes of journals they were familiar with. 3
The Ranking with over 1,500 journals covers all fields of business administration (e.g., management, marketing, finance, accounting) and related areas (e.g., economics, psychology, political science). The evaluation scale ranged from 1 (very low) to 10 (very high). The results were adjusted according to the different experience levels of the respondents. [Editors note] In order to keep the JQL to a manageable length, lower-ranked journals (ranking D&E) of the VHB list were only added if they already featured in the JQL. The same principle was applied to German-language journals. The list also included a range of engineering and computer science journals that were not included in the JQL as they were seen as less relevant to Management/Business/Economics. Journals that were ranked by less than 10 (but more than 5) respondents, were only included if they (a) already featured in the JQL or (b) had a score of A or A+. These journals are indicated with a letter score in brackets, e.g. (A). Five journals that were right on the borderline between scores (e.g. with a score of 7.998) were assigned the higher level score. BJM 2004 British Jnl of Management 2001 Business & Mgmt RAE rankings
Published as Geary, J.; Marriott, L.; Rowlinson, M. (2004) Journal Rankings in Business and Management and the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise in the UK, British Journal of Management, vol. 15, pp. 95-141. This list is based on the premise that academic staff in institutions with a higher RAE rating will tend to publish in higher-quality journals. Journals are therefore rated based on the frequency with which they are included in each of the seven RAE ratings (5*, 5, 4, 3A, 3B, 2, 1). Theoretically this means that a journals score could run from 1 (only cited in RAE submissions from institutions with a 1 lowest rating) to 7 (only cited in RAE submissions from institutions with a 5* highest rating). Since academics in institutions rated 1 or 2 tend to publish very little, the practical range is 3-7, while most journals are in the 4-7 range. The BJM04 list includes 562 journals that accounted for 83% of the citations in the RAE submissions. As recommended in the article median scores were used rather than mean scores. [Editors note] In order to keep the JQL to a manageable length, lower-ranked journals (ranking 1-4) of the BJM04 list were only added if they already featured in the JQL. Journals that had less than 10 submissions are indicated with the respective score in brackets. Please note that some journals only had 1 or 2 submissions and hence scores can be idiosyncratic. HKB 2005 Hong Kong Baptist University School of Business 2005

List approved by the Executive Committee of HKBU, April 2005. Ratings on a A , B+, B and Bscale, where A represents the highest and B- the lowest rating. [Editors note] Journals that were mentioned on the HKBU list, but not on any other list, were only included if they had at least a B ranking. Law journals were excluded, as were Statistics & Probability journals unless they already appeared on the list. The HKB00 list was used as a basis, so journals that did appear on the 2000 list, but were no longer included in the HKB05 list are still included in the JQL. 4

Theo 2005 Theoharakis et al.

The Theoharakis et al. index aggregates perceived journal rankings based on surveys among 7 different populations of academics and PhD students in seven different scholarly fields (Management, Marketing, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Information Systems and Statistics). Respondents were asked to choose from a comprehensive list of journals in their respective field and rank up to 10 journals as top tier and up to 10 journals as second tier based on each journals contribution to the discipline in terms of rigor, prestige and importance. The calculated index combines a journals average rank position with its familiarity (i.e. the number of respondents who placed the respective journal among their top 20), assigning a decreasing weight to lower rank positions. The overall (world) index was used, which has a theoretical maximum of 100. Index figures for the Information Systems subfield were calculated manually from the available raw data. The surveys have been published in a variety of discipline-based journals between 2001 and 2005. One paper is still under review. For more information on the various listings, see: http://www.alba.edu.gr/survey/ For the purpose of the JQL the seven different surveys have been combined to one aggregate list. It should be noted, however, that comparison across sub-disciplines is only possible in a very limited way, since each survey is based on a different survey population and ranks the journals relative to each other. [Editors note] For journals that were included in the list of more than one scholarly field, the highest index score is reported. In consultation with the authors, the ranking for Production and Operations Management had to be excluded as it followed a different methodology. Statistics journals were only included if they already featured in the JQL. The small set of other journals that were not yet featured in the JQL were also ignored since they had low quality scores (below 5 in most cases below 10 in virtually all cases). EJL 2006 Erasmus Research Institute of Management Journals Listing

The strategic purpose of the ERIM Journals List is to contribute to the quality of the scientific output of ERIM and to the academic reputation of the institute. The ERIM Journals List (EJL) helps to define the core domain of ERIM and provides direction as to the type of publications that ERIM would like to produce. The practical purpose is to guarantee to the ERIM members and aspirant members that publications in the journals of the EJL will qualify for membership. The EJL is believed to cover the whole field of research in management, as far as the ERIM research programs are concerned. This does not imply that no credit will be given for publications in journals that are not on the EJL. It is impossible to make an exhaustive list of all the journals in the domain of research in management. The ERIM journals list is based on judgment by peers and (ISI) impact scores. [Editors note] If a journal of the EJIM list was not already included in the JQL (which apart from half a dozen Dutch journals was rare), it was only added if it had a score of STAR or P(A).

EJIS 2007 European Journal of Information Systems 2007 Mingers & Harzing
This list provides an integrated ranking of all journal rankings available in the JQL as at December 2005 (17th edition). The details of its construction as well as a range of additional analyses have been published in the European Journal of Information Systems, vol. 16, no. 4. An earlier working paper is also available from http://www.harzing.com/papers.htm#jqlrank. Two rankings are available (EJIS07 and EJIS07-CI); the second ranking includes the JIF for 2004 as part of its analysis. [Editors note] Some journals were removed from this analysis because they had a very limited number of rankings (e.g. all communication journals that were only ranked on the UQ list). Further, several dozens of journals have been added to the JQL since this list was constructed. Hence, ratings for some 100 journals are not available.
UQ 2007 University of Queensland Journal Rating 2007

This list was originally constructed in 2003 in three stages: 1. Construction of a mega-database (over 2,000 titles) based on ratings and rankings from over 120 sources. 2. Allocation of each title to one of 5 tiers (1 = highest, 5 = lowest) on the basis of the second highest rating from the rating/ranking sources (i.e., the rating must be from at least two sources). 3. The data base was supplied to the six discipline cluster leaders in the school as a resource that they could use to construct the official list (which comprises 588 journals). They could use the mega-database or any other source to justify each journal's rating. [Editors note] In order to keep the JQL to a manageable length, lower-ranked journals (ranking 4&5) of the UQ list were only added if they already featured in the JQL. An exception was made for Australasian journals and Entrepreneurship/Communication journals, since they were underrepresented in the other ranking lists included in the JQL. [Editors note] The JQL includes the updated (2007) version of the UQ list. Unfortunately, no information is available on the process that was followed in updating in the 2003 list. AERES 2008 Agence dvaluation de la recherche et de lenseignement suprieur

The AERES journal list has been constructed by the section 37 of the CNRS, in consultation with academics from institutions such as CNRS, INRA and CNU. It has continuously evolved over time. In order to be qualified as research active, academics generally have to publish at least two articles in a four year period in journals on the AERES list if they have a teaching & research contract and four articles in four years if they have a research only contract. Journals are ranked from A* to C, but no further explanation of the scoring is available. [Editors note] In order to keep the JQL to a manageable length, lower-ranked journals (ranked B or C) of the AEARS08list were only added if they already featured in the JQL. Journals in Law, Agricultural/Energy Economics and Health that were not already included in other lists in Business and Management were also excluded as were French journals. As many French rankings, the list seems to have a rather strong emphasis on Economics and many of the journals in Management & Marketing are ranked much lower than on other lists.
AST 2008 Aston March 2008

New version of the Aston lists originally published in 1999/2003/2006. The 1999 list was based on a large survey of opinions of academics of the Midlands universities. In 2003 this list was sent to Aston research convenors for discussion within their group and each group then sent in revised lists which formed the basis of the new rankings. Anybody who wanted to add a journal was asked to provide evidence, preferably citation evidence from the World of Knowledge Data Base, but failing that expert opinions in the field from other universities. In the 2006 rankings are made on the basis of citation rates, impact factors, interrogation of data bases and the evaluations of senior academic staff in Aston Business School and other international business schools. They are subject to change as the standing and impact of journals changes. No information was available about the procedures for the 2008 update. [Editors note] Journals that were mentioned on the Aston 2008 list, but not on any other list, were only included if they had at least a 3 ranking. Law journals were excluded. CNRS 2008 Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (www.cnrs.fr) June 2008 (version 2.1)
Update of the 2004&2007 ranking of journals in Economics and Business constructed by the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique. The list of journals was constructed through consultation with experts in the field, both in France and abroad. Directors of the various research groups (and through them the researchers in these groups) were consulted in an iterative process. Rankings of foreign universities were also consulted as well as listings such as SSCI and EconLit. Only academic peer-reviewed journals were included in the list and hence it excludes high-ranked professional journals such as Harvard Business Review. Rankings are based on several criteria: academic reputation, audience and impact. It is the intention of CNRS to re-evaluate the list on a regular basis. The 2.1 version only includes minor changes and specified the conditions for regular updates. Agricultural/Energy Economics and Health that were not already included in other lists in Business and Management were also excluded as were French journals. The list seems to have a rather strong emphasis on Economics. Six of the eight 1*-rated journals are in Economics, while this is the case for half of the 1-rated journals. Nearly 75% of the Economics journals that are ranked have either a 1 or a 2 ranking. Furthermore, whereas journals in F&A, OR/MS/POM and MIS/KM still have a fair number of 1 and 2-rated journals, the vast majority of journals in General Management & Strategy and Marketing are rated 3 or 4. As such the 2008 list only contains journals with an A+ and A ranking and the WIE01 was therefore maintained in the JQL. [Editors note] Journals that were mentioned on the WIE 2008 list, but were not included in the JQL were only included if they had an A+ ranking.
ABDC 2010 Australian Business Deans Council Journal Rankings List February 2010
The ABDC Journal List is a collaborative list developed by the Australian Business Deans Council that seeks to list journals relevant to Australian business academics and group these journals into four quality categories ranging in descending order from: Rank A* Interpretation Best or leading journal in its field - publishes outstanding, original and rigorous research that will shape the field. Acceptance rates are typically low and the editorial board is dominated by leading scholars in the field or subfield, including from top institutions in the world. Where relevant to the field or subfield, the journal has the highest impact factors or other indices of high reputation. Highly regarded journal in the field or subfield - publishes excellent research in terms of originality, significance and rigour, has competitive submission and acceptance rates, excellent refereeing process and where relevant to the field or subfield, has higher than average impact factors. Not all highly regarded journals have high impact factors, especially those in niche areas. Well regarded journal in the field or subfield - publishes research of a good standard in terms of originality, significance and rigour and papers are fully refereed according to good standards and practices but acceptance rates are higher than for Tiers A* and A. Depending on the field or sub-field, will have a modest impact factor and will be ISI listed. A recognised journal - publishes research that is of a modest standard and/or is yet to establish its reputation because of its newness. This tier is more inclusive than the others but only includes refereed journals.

ABS 2010 Association of Business Schools Academic Journal Quality Guide March 2010
The first version of this list was published by Bristol Business School in June 2004, while the second version appeared in 2005 as the Harvey Morris Business Journals List. The original list stems from an analysis of where UK academics declared publications for the purposes of RAE 2001. Other journals were then added through comparison with other lists in circulation. Rankings in these lists were standardized at this stage, bearing in mind the UK RAE 2008 classification of research outputs as 4* (best work in the field), 3* (international excellence), 2* (internationally recognised) 1* (nationally recognised). In converting the second edition of the HM List to the ABS list the editors followed a nine stage procedure involving significant peer review and review of the quality standards, track records, contents and processes of each journal. For the 2nd (March 2008), 3rd edition (March 2009) and 4th edition (March 2010) a review panel of experts considered feedback from academic associations, publishers and individual academics. As a result some 150 journals that were listed in the 3rd edition no longer appear in the 4th edition. As is to be expected, most of these journals were only tangentially related to Economics or Business. However, some of these journals were highly ranked, so omission from the 4th edition should not be seen as a sign of low quality]. Cra 2010 Cranfield University School of Management February 2010 (7 th ed)

This list provides guidelines to staff on which journals they should consider submitting their papers to. It should be noted that the grading for each journal is the Schools view, and guided the Schools submission to the RAE 2008. The projected grading has been produced using a large number of internal and external sources, including journal impact factors. [Editors note] If a journal of the Cranfield list was not already included in the JQL (which was rare), it was only added if it had a score of 3 or 4. Ess 2010 ESSEC Business School Paris 2009/2010

ESSEC is one of the top French business schools. Its first journal ranking list was established 18 years ago. The current list is dated 15.04.2010. The ranking of a journal was decided by a committee of seven ESSEC professors with outstanding performance in research. Factors considered are the aim and scope of the journal, the quality of its board, the SCCI impact factor, external opinions about the journal, quality of the papers, readership, scale of distribution in libraries, journal lifetime, refereeing process, etc. Although it is based on a relatively small number of key informants, the list was included to provide a French perspective on journal rankings. [Editors note] In order to keep the JQL to a manageable length, lower-ranked journals (1-2) were only added if they already featured in the JQL. Also excluded were journals in the area of law, politics, mathematics, computing (unless related to OR), psychology (unless related to OB), and medicine as well as most French journals. VHB 2011 Assoc. of Professors of Business in German speaking countries

A ranking developed on behalf of the Association of University Professors of Business in German speaking countries (Verband der Hochschullehrer fr Betriebswirtschaft - VHB). This version (VHB-JOURQUAL 2.1) is an update of the second edition (2008). Rankings of journals on the list were not updated, but new journals were added. [Editors note] In order to keep the JQL to a manageable length, lower-ranked journals (ranking B-E) of the VHB list were only added if they already featured in the JQL. The same principle 10
was applied to German-language journals. The list also included a range of Engineering and Computer Science as well as Health journals that were not included in the JQL as they were seen as less relevant to Management/Business/Economics. In contrast to the VHB03 list journals with less than 10 respondents were not given a rating and hence there are no scores in brackets in the VHB08 list. Since some journals score very different in the VHB08 ranking as compared to the VHB03 list and other ranking lists, we decided to maintain the VHB03 list.
