A small gift can make a big difference

Helping Children Worldwide (HCW) and its partners are transforming the lives of children and families through quality medical care, education, homelessness prevention, ESL training, immigration legal counseling, and mental health services. Last year alone, 12,800 peoples lives were transformed with the support of over 500 volunteers. Because of generous support:

300 Children were cared for by the Child Rescue Centre in Bo, Sierra Leone 3,300 households received access to multiple life-changing services
at Connections for Hope in Herndon,Virginia in Bo, Sierra Leone

10,000 Patients received quality medical care at Mercy Hospital 21 Youth from the Child Rescue Centre are enrolled in post-secondary education 215 People received nancial management and tax preparation assistance

Child Rescue Centre Gifts

SHOES $7
In Sierra Leone, many children grow up without shoes, putting them at risk for trauma and parasitic diseases that enter the bare foot. Your gift provides a CRC child with shoes, so they can stay healthy.

FEED A CHILD $20

One in three children under the age of ve are malnourished in Sierra Leone, undermining their health and academic potential. The CRC provides good nutrition for strong bodies and healthy minds.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES $50

Many children in Sierra Leone attend school without a text book, notebook or workbook. Your gift provides a CRC child with the tools they need to succeed in school.

FOSTER CARE $50

Provide one month of support for one of the 30 Foster Care children of the CRC, including health care and education. The Foster Care program supports previously homeless children who have been placed in homes with loving families.

CHILD SUPPORT PROGRAM $100 0

The CSP supports children whose families struggle to send them to school. Your gift provides tuition, books, supplies and health care.

VOCATIONAL TRAINING $120

Provide a month of support to a CRC youth in vocational training to learn a skill such as tailoring or nursing. 80% of Sierra Leoneans do not have a high school education.

FEED ALL THE CHILDREN $150

Your generous gift feeds all of the residential children at the CRC for an entire day. The CRC provides essential support to more than 300 children.

There are children who dont attend school in Sierra Leone, because they have to sell food on the street so their
families can survive. Many children are in the care of a grandmother or an aunt because their parents have died. Additional children are a burden for families that are already impoverished. This year, the CRC enrolled an additional 50 children into the Child Support Program to help these children and families by covering the cost of school tuition, books, backpacks, shoes and uniforms. The children also receive essential health care at Mercy Hospital. The story of the childs entire family changes for the better, because the children have education and medical care.

Mercy Hospital Gifts

MEDICAL CARE FOR A CHILD $5
Sierra Leone has one of the highest under ve mortality rates in the world. Your gift provides outpatient care for a child, including medicine.

ANTI-MALARIA KIT $15

Malaria is a preventable, treatable disease, yet a child dies of malaria every 30 seconds. Your gift provides a bed net treated with insecticide and education to prevent malaria.

IN-HOSPITAL DELIVERY $20

In Sierra Leone, women commonly give birth unattended at home, leading to high maternal and infant mortality. Your gift provides in-hospital care for a mother and her baby,

Suffering from typhoid fever a 14-month old baby had been treated at another hospital, but the symptoms were not going away.
Theres nothing more we can do, the doctors told her. The baby was brought to Mercy Hospital as a last measure, where Dr. Tejan admitted her and ran a culture to determine the actual pathogen and the specic types of medications that would cure her infection.This ability to name the pathogen and understand its antibiotic resistance is a unique clinical service in the Bo region. As it turned out, the pathogen was resistant to the e medication the baby had been treated with. Within a week k of getting treatment with the correct antibiotic, the baby was cured. This is revolutionary in Sierra Leone where culture and sensitivity testing are available only at private hospitals for the wealthy. Without the Mercy Research Lab capability, this baby would not have survived.

ANTIBIOTIC TREATMENT $25

In Sierra Leone, children often die of treatable disease. Your gift provides treatment for diseases such as typhoid and other bacterial infections.

HIV COMMUNITY EDUCATION WORKSHOP $50

In the region surrounding Mercy Hospital, 10% of the population is HIV positive. Your gift provides a workshop for 100 people to learn vital information about how to protect themselves and their children from HIV/ AIDS, including the prevention of mother to child transmission.

INPATIENT CARE $75

Fewer than 200 doctors serve the entire population of Sierra Leone, more than 5.8 million people. Your gift provides hospital treatment for one person, including doctors care, nursing, medicine and supplies.

NUTRITIONAL CARE $100

Malnutrition is the greatest cause of child mortality. Poor nutrition causes stunted growth and vulnerability to disease. Your gift provides a malnourished child with nutritional intervention, including parental training and support.

FORECLOSURE PREVENTION $25

13% of Fairfax County residents have incomes under $44,100. Because of the foreclosure prevention program, hundreds of people have been able to keep their homes. Your gift provides the space for this training.

There is a little boy who comes to Connections for Hope every week. He lights up the center with his energy and
inquisitiveness. He started coming with his mother and sisters to receive medical care from the Jeanie Schmidt Free Clinic. His mother learned that she could take English language classes with the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia, and d that she could enroll her daughters in the after school homework k assistance program with Vecinos Unidos Neighbors United. After r completing ESOL classes, the little boys mother attended a Parents Raising Safe Kids class provided by Community Services Board. This family feels welcomed and safe at Connections for Hope, where they have access to services that will help them become self-sufcient, contributing member of the community.

JOB SKILLS TRAINING $50

Computer skills training, learning how to look professional and job application guidelines are essential for people looking for employment. Your gift helps us provide these skills to job seekers.

SAFE PARENTING CLASS $50

The Parents Raising Safe Kids program educates families about how to create healthy home environments that protect children from violence. Connections for Hope provides a welcoming space for the class and child care.

LANGUAGE TRAINING $75

In Fairfax County, 35% of residents speak a language other than English at home, which can make it difcult to nd employment. Your gift supports the space for training and child care for weekly English classes.

FREE MEDICAL CARE $100
