MARCH 11, 2012 THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT

TOTAL ALLEGIANCE
In previous weeks we have seen how the theme of covenantas a preparation for the baptismal covenant celebrated at Easteroccupies an important place in our cycle of Lenten readings. The notion of covenant as a relationship between two parties carries with it an expectation of mutual accountability and fidelity to the terms of the covenant. When God forged the covenant with the Jewish people on Mt. Sinai, it was a pledge of Gods protection, and it would forever permit them familiar access as the Chosen People. For their part, the Jewish people were to observe the dictates of the law, summarized most succinctly here in the form of the Ten Commandments. To be in a covenantal relationship with the Lord God requires an exclusive relationship, just as discipleship with Jesusritualized in baptismdemands a total allegiance to him and none other. Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

1. Everyone 14 years of age or over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. 2. Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 years of age is bound to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. 3. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 4. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. 5. Lent is the principal season of penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary selfdenial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy.

STEWARDSHIP PRAYER FOR MARCH

Good and gracious God, We give you thanks and praise for the gift of March and the daily surprises it brings rooted in your unending generosity. Our days are longer; the air warmer. New life and growth abound springing forth in nests, forests, flower beds, fields, and within our hearts and souls during this Lenten season of preparation and repentance. Oh Creator of being, Giver of warmth and light, guide us as we cultivate, harvest and share our entrusted gifts in order to turn all life toward the Son. We ask these things through Christ our Lord. Amen.

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Families across the globe are affected by war, natural disasters, extreme poverty and human trafficking. Many family members are separated for long periods of time because of migration issues. Because of this, unaccompanied minors are often exploited. Catholic Relief Services values families. It works to provide for basic human needs, to protect children and reunite families. It also encourages legislation that reflects the importance of the family in society. The annual collection for Catholic Relief Services helps persons across the world. Families on every continent are assisted no matter their ethnic background, no matter their needs. Please be generous with your contribution to this collection. Thank you for helping families in need. May the Lord bless you.

Living the Eucharist

Currently, we have 47 participants attending the Living the Eucharist parish Lenten renewal program. The discussions have been wonderful and the participants are enjoying themselves. It is great sharing our faith with one another. The discussions are lively and bring a greater understanding of the Gospel each week. Please continue to pray for the adults meeting weekly and the families working on their booklets together.

Build a Better You. Through Living the Eucharist Retreat Saturday, April 28th
9:30-2:30 in the PLC and Church We conclude our Lenten Parish Renewal with a retreat on April 28, 2012. This is a half day retreat focusing on how to respond to Gods promise made to us, I will always be with you. The first half of the day begins with prayer, discussion, and followed with lunch and Adoration. All parishioners are invited to the retreat whether you participated in the small groups or not. This is a wonderful way to commence the Easter Season. We need musicians, lectors, prayer leaders, and kitchen help for the retreat. Please contact Eileen Maggiore by email at eileen@ctklombard.org.

Blood Pressure Screenings

Blood pressure screenings will be taken on the week-end of March 24 and 25. Please come after Mass to the counsel room to check your current blood pressure and to learn about how blood pressure affects your health. Blood pressures will be taken by an RN.

Religious Freedom Sunday Be informed. Be heard. Join I-CAN! Illinois Catholic Advocacy Network
The Catholic Conference of Illinois (CCI) was created in 1969 to be the public policy voice of the bishops and the Church. CCI interacts with the state legislature, the Governors office and all elements of state government to promote and defend the interests of the Church. CCI is well known within the halls of government, but outside of the Capitol building, our public profile is low. Few lay Catholics realize they have a representative a voice in what goes on in state government. The bishops of Illinois and CCI want to remedy this situation. We want parishioners to know that CCI exists as an active and informational service to the Church and her followers. To help increase awareness of CCI and what is going on in Springfield, we are creating the Illinois Catholic Advocacy Network or I-CAN. Pews cards will be available and collected at all Masses on Religious Freedom Sunday so that interested parishioners can sign up to receive email updates on state issues affecting the Church. Sign up for I-CAN! www.catholicconferenceofillinois.org www.facebook.com/CatholicConferenceofIllinois

Thou Shalt not Kill: The Slippery Slope

Todays Gospel covers the Ten Commandments. These were later expanded and supplemented so that in Jesus time the Jews were following 613 laws. Jesus did not do away with the law, but simplified them to two. One of the original 10 was : Thou shalt not kill. In Mathews Gospel Jesus expanded this into additional questions on st which to examine ones conscience. On the 1 Friday of Lent the Gospel includes Matthew 20:21-22"You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment. But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment, and whoever says to his brother, Raqa, will be answerable to the Sanhedrin, and whoever says, 'You fool,' will be liable to fiery Gehenna. The question of life is very extensive. Many people are prolife, but what does that mean to the individual? Do we carry it so far as the question of anger or judgment? At a speech in 1983, then Archbishop Joseph Bernardin spoke on a consistent ethic of life, for the spectrum of life cuts across the issues of genetics, abortion, capital punishment, modem warfare and the care of the terminally ill. These are all distinct problems, enormously complicated, and deserving individual treatment. Some people may focus their time, prayer and effort on one area versus another, but we are all called to a moral awareness of the complete spectrum. Pope Paul VI, in his 1968 encyclical Humanae Vitae, gave four almost prophetic warnings if a contraceptive mentatlity became the norm: 1. the widespread use of contraception would "lead to conjugal infidelity and the general lowering of morality." 2. that "the man" will lose respect for "the woman" and "no longer (care) for her physical and psychological equilibrium" and will come to "the point of considering her as a mere instrument of selfish enjoyment and no longer as his respected and beloved companion." 3. the widespread acceptance of contraception would place a "dangerous weapon . . . in the hands of those public authorities who take no heed of moral exigencies." 4. contraception would lead man to think that he had unlimited dominion over his own body. Sterilization is now the most widely used form of contraception in the U.S I cant recall our US Bishops being so unanimous at issuing a call for attention as they have over this issue. Cardinal George, on Feb 29, states In a letter he intended to be read citywide at Chicago's Catholic masses, the cardinal accused the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services of "denying to Catholics our Nations first and most fundamental freedom, that of religious liberty" by forcing religiously affiliated employers to pay for their employees' birth control. He only sees three options for Catholic institutions to avoid shutting down under the Obama administration's birth control mandate: To "secularize itself, breaking its connection to the church, her moral and social teachings and the oversight of its ministry by the local bishop;" to "pay exorbitant annual fees" to avoid paying for birth control-inclusive insurance policies or to "sell the institution to a non-Catholic group or to a local government." This is a life issue. This is a religious, moral issue. This is a constitutional rights issue. Become more informed, pray and take action. Continue to hold in prayer all the sick of the parish, the homebound, the hospitalized, caregivers, and those facing surgery. Im slowly healing and returning to church. Deacon Frank
