THE DIRIGIBLE
Civil Air Patrol News Letter
Special points of interest: > Oct 1st First AfterSchool CAP meeting at Strough
History Civil Air Patrol (CAP) was established 1 December 1941, as a private, nonprofit corporation of a benevolent character, incorporated by the United States Congress on 1 July 1946 (36 USC 40301-40307). On 26 May 1948, President Harry S. Truman signed Public Law 557 establishing CAP as a permanent civilian United States Air Force (USAF) Auxiliary. CAP and USAF maintain a civilian-military relationship that is based upon CAPs status as the USAF auxiliary. As such, CAPs services to the nation and USAF are voluntary, benevolent, and noncombatant. United States Air Force support to Civil Air Patrol includes funding, guidance, and oversight. Civil Air Patrol National Headquarters is located at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama; for additional information, see the CAP Web site at http://www.cgocivilairpatrol.com Our CAP Squadron The Civil Air Patrol, although resembling the Air Force JROTC program, it is very much a different organization. The Rome City School District Cadet Squadron, Charter NY 801, is the first CAP Drug Demand Reduction (DDR) Middle School Initiative in New York State. The squadron meets every Wednesday from 3:30PM to 5:45PM at Strough Middle School. We provide the cadets with character (moral) leadership, Aerospace education, Team building activities, and Drill & Ceremony. Oh, and the cadets get to fly, yes, they take the controls of a Cessna airplane and fly, all with the direct supervision of CAP licensed pilots. The cadets in turn provide free community and Color Guard services to both private and public organizations. We are now nearing the completion of our third year, and we still see room for growth. We are averaging about 85 active cadets with only 7 adult volunteer members. This of course is always a challenge, but as the first and second year cadets gain experience they become the leaders and mentors for the new and younger cadets.
