Joint WV/MD SAREX April 18 - 20, 2008

The joint SAREX was a resounding success. MD Wing knows how to make an entranceseven Blackhawk helicopters landed at Grant County Airport at 1850L on Friday evening. We had a total of 14 aircraft flying on Saturday and six joint ground teams in the field. From the reports I received some great training occurred and everyone had a good time. We had an excellent barbecue dinner on Saturday evening, followed by a bonfire. The weather on Sunday precluded the return of the Blackhawks, so the MD personnel drove home in their Vans. Thanks to everyone who helped with the planning and to everyone who attended. We had 101 WV Wing members and 99 MD Wing members at the exercise, for a total of 200 CAP members! A great turnout!

New Aircraft Arrives

On Sunday, March 30, 2008 Lt Col Shelton Davis and Capt B.J. Davis touched down at the Eastern WV Regional Airport with the newest aircraft in the WV Wing. The new Cessna 182T Glass Cockpit contains sophisticated instrumentation, including a Garmin G-1000 Avionics System, consisting of two 10-inch computer screens that supply all communications, navigation and engine instrumentation functions, along with an integrated Automatic Flight Control System. The aircraft has a built in Stormscope Weather Mapping Sensor as well as Nexrad radar and current aviation weather through the Satellite XM Radio data link.

Adopt-a-Highway Detail
April 5, 2008

I want to THANK the 14 squadron members who helped with the Adopt-a-Highway Project and with the landscaping project at the new hangar. This was very hard working group of cadets and senior members who filled a total of 48 trash bags (the most we have had in 10 years), and who also picked up 5 tires and other assorted goodies! Notably, most of the trash that was picked up was on airport property and not along the roadway. A total of 10 officers reported for duty along with four cadets. 2

Squadron Leadership School

The Martinsburg Composite Squadron hosted a Squadron Leadership School (SLS) May 17-18, 2008, at the Eastern WV Regional Airport (Shepherd Field) Terminal (2nd Floor meeting room). The Squadron Leadership School (SLS) provides CAP adult members with a basic understanding of CAP operations at the squadron level and how those operations affect the CAP national mission. Additionally, members learn more about CAP customs, core values, and communications. Case studies, discussion, and group assignments are integral facets of the SLS. This is a requirement for completion of Senior Member Level Two training. The completion of Level Two earns the Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. Award. Squadron Commander Lt Col Robert Mills was the course director. Instructors were Lt Col Dennis Barron, Maj Brad Williams and Capt Russ Voelker.

Energy Drink Consumption Predicts Risky Teen Behavior

(Research Summary) Recent research suggests that teens and young adults who consume energy drinks may be at greater risk of a number of highrisk behaviors, such as unprotected sex, alcohol and other drug problems, and violence, the New York Times reported May 26. While some young energy-drink users have become physically ill after consuming the products, experts are also worried about the relationship between use of the high-caffeine products and risk-taking. A March 2008 study in the Journal of American College Health, for example, linked energy-drink use among athletes to a variety of high-risk behaviors. "It appears the kids who are heavily into drinking energy drinks are more likely to be the ones who are inclined toward taking risks," said study author Kathleen Miller of the University of Buffalo. The beverage industry contends that most energy drinks contain caffeine levels comparable to a cup of coffee, but experts note that because they are served cold, energy drinks can be consumed more quickly than hot coffee drinks. Mixing energy drinks with alcohol also is a growing concern because the stimulants in energy drinks can mask the intoxicating effects of alcohol and allow drinkers to stay awake longer and consume more alcohol. "You're every bit as drunk, you're just an awake drunk," said researcher Mary Claire O'Brien of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. 3
