2008 WV Wing Summer Encampment

By Lt Col Dennis D. Barron

Thirteen cadets and one senior member from the Martinsburg Squadron attended the 2008 WV Wing Summer Encampment. The encampment was held the week of June 21 28, at the WV National Guards training base, Camp Dawson, located near Kingwood, WV. A total of 92 cadets from around the state successfully completed the encampment, along with 9 senior members. The encampment was commanded again this year by Lt Col Dennis D. Barron, a veteran of many, many cadet encampments. Assisting him was the Commander of the Martinsburg Squadron, Lt Col Robert Mills, who served as the Encampment Safety Officer. C/Lt Col Mark Guiney was selected as the Cadet Commander of the encampment. He was responsible for leading the cadet cadre throughout the week long training schedule. He was assisted by several cadets from the Martinsburg Squadron who also served in leadership positions at the encampment, most notably being C/CMSgt Jonah Rock, who served as the Encampment First Sergeant. C/1Lt Chris Frey and C/2Lt Andrew Mitchell were Flight Commanders during the week while C/CMSgt Joel Lyons served an Assistant Flight Commander. In addition to the above, also attending the encampment from the Martinsburg Squadron was Cadets Ryan Miller, Joseph Dye, John Dye, Nick Keefe, Brandon Might, Ty Stansbury, Caleb Sullivan, and David-Michael Buckman. Throughout the week, the cadets participated in team building exercises, learned about land and water survival techniques, built and launched model rockets, got to meet WV wildlife (a variety of snakes and an actual bald eagle) up close and personal, attempted to drive golf carts while wearing Fatal Vision Goggles, climbed a rock wall, survived the confidence course, and used the electronic weapons simulator extensively. In addition, the cadets made good use of the base swimming pool, learned how to drill in large groups, played volleyball, and participated in other sports competition. The encampment was closed with a very impressive Pass and Review Parade, followed by a graduation and awards ceremony. During the ceremony, C/CMSgt Joel Lyons was recognized as the Outstanding NCO of the Encampment, while C/1Lt Chris Frey earned the Honor Flight Commanders Award. Also receiving an award for being a member of the Honor Flight was C/A1C John Dye. (Encampment photos on page 5)

Family Day
July 13, 2008

Beautiful weather brought out a crowd for the annual 167th Airlift Wing Family Day. Also attending the event were three senior and two cadet members of the Martinsburg Composite Squadron. After assisting base security forces park cars, one of the cadets dressed as McGruff, the crime dog, walked around greeting children and signing autographs.

On Tuesday, July 29th, the regular weekly meeting was replaced with a work detail at the squadrons hangar. Twenty plus cadet and senior members turned out to do landscaping duties. Members also cleaned the hangar floor in preparation for sealing.

We collected our $2000 fee on Saturday night after finishing up the sixth night of parking cars This year, we really had a great showing of support by the squadron members. Despite many problems presented by the change in the landscape of the Youth Fair Grounds, we had very few difficulties with the traffic and every night went smoothly. Again, thanks to all the members who helped out.
