Permission To Immigrate

Grade Level: 5 Subject: Social Studies Prepared by: Robin Armstead Overview and Purpose: The purpose of this activity is to give students a chance to choose correctly first whether a person should be allowed in the county, and then under what condition are they allowed. The lesson is composed of an overview of immigration and reasons why people are allowed or denied access. In the second part of the lesson, students will use an interactive game to practice what they have learned. Finally, students will be discuss what they learned and give examples. Educational Standards Standard 2B Student understands new immigration and demographic shifts SS5H8 The student will describe the importance of key people, events, and developments between 1950-1975. SSCG3 The student will demonstrate knowledge of the United States Constitution. Objectives: Specify skills/information that will be learned

Explain the different conditions that allow a person access into the U.S. from another country. Identify causes that would restrict a person from being admitted into the country. Apply information about immigration laws to individual case scenarios. Choose whether a person is likely to be admitted in the United States. Justify admittance or denial into the U.S. using the applicable law or condition.

Materials Needed: iPad (or other tablet device) for each child and teacher PowerPoint based on Immigration Law and Conditions Other Resources: (websites, videos, books, etc.) Liberty Belles Immigration Nation Game http://www.icivics.org/game/popout/4474 Information: Give and/or demonstration necessary information

1. Teacher brings a prepared PowerPoint presentation to class. The PowerPoint contains


the following information. a. Introduction to immigration- what is an immigrant b. Reasons why people come to America-economics, education, refuges etc c. Reviews the Immigration Act of 1965 outlining the provisions in which a person can come to America d. Reviews current conditions that allow individuals into the United States Teacher introduces the material eliciting responses from the class and discussion as necessary. Teacher tells the students to log on to the game. Teacher explains the basic principles of the game and plays the first round asking the students to vote on the right answer. Teacher instructs the students to engage in 30 minutes of game play, explaining

that they should write down an example from each of the 5 ways a person can be admitted in the United States and an example of why they can be denied. 6. Teacher walks around the room looking at the scores and providing assistance as needed. 7. The teacher asks each of the students to share what they learned by providing an example from what they wrote down and any other interesting thing they would like to share.

Verification: Steps to check for student understanding

1. Teacher asks the students to verbally respond to questions during the presentation. 2. Teacher goes around the room during the game play checking their scores. 3. Teacher asks students to share information they learned from the game.
Activity: Describe activity that will reinforce the lesson Students are instructed to log on to the Liberty Belles Immigration Nation Game using the web link http://www.icivics.org/game/popout/4474. The students play the game for approximately 30 minutes advancing in the levels. During the game students must write down each of the 5 ways that a person can gain admittance into the United States and an example. They must also write down 1 reason why a person may be denied from coming into the United States.
