A piece of material is subjected to tensile stresses of px and py at right angles to each other ( px > p y ) . Derive expressions for normal, tangential and resultant stresses on a plane the normal to which makes an angle with the direction of px. Find also the plane across which the resultant stress is most inclined to the normal. [20] 2. Using max. strain energy theory, estimate the safe dia. for a mild steel rod to carry an axial pull of 10 kN together with a transverse shear 5 kN and the factor of safety 3. Take the Poissons ratio as 0.3. [20] A solid steel shaft has to transmit 80 H.P. at 200 R.P.M. The max. torque transmitted in each revolution exceeds the mean by 30%. Find a suitable dia. of the shaft if the permissible shear stress is 80 N/mm2. [20] Two co-axial springs, one placed inside the other and made of steel wires of the same dia. support an axial compressive load P on a rigid plate on the top of the springs. The number of coils in the two springs are 10 and 12 while the mean radii of the coils are 40mm and 60mm. Both the springs are of equal length before loading. Calculate P, if the wire dia. is 8mm and the shear stress in the wire is not [20] to exceed 800 N/mm2. A cylindrical chimney shaft of a hollow circular section, 2.50 meters external diameter, 1 meter internal diameter, is 30 meters high. If the horizontal intensity of wind pressure varies as X2/3 where X is the vertical height above the ground, calculate the overturning moment at the base due to the force of wind pressure, taking the coefficient of wind-resistance as 0.6. Given that the horizontal intensity of wind pressure at a height of 20 meters is 1 KN/m2. If the weight of masonry is 22.5 KN/m3, calculate the extreme intensities of stress at the base. [20]

Determine the forces in various members as shown in figure below. [20]

Compare the values of max. and minimum hoop stresses for a cast steel cylindrical shell of 600 mm external dia. and 400 mm internal dia. Subjected to a pressure of 30 N/mm2 applied: a) Internally and b) Externally. [10+10] A timber joist, 100 mm wide and 200 mm deep, is freely supported over a span of 4 meters. It is subjected to a bending moment of 30,000 cm kg at the central section, the trace OY of the plane of loading being inclined at 300 to the principal axis OY. Locate the neutral axis and calculate the maximum bending stress induced. If the bending moment is due to a total load of 600 kg uniformly distributed over the whole span calculate the deflection. Take E = 105 kg/cm2.[20]
