1. Applying max. strain energy theory nd the dia of a steel bar subjected to an axial pull of 10 kN along with a transverse S.F of 5 kN. Take the elastic limit in tension as 240 MPa and F.O.S. = 3. [20] 2. A tie bar of cross - sectional area 1000mm2 is subjected to an axial tensile load of 70 kN. Find the normal, tangential and resultant stresses on a plane the normal to which makes an angle of 300 with the axis of the bar. Find also the max. values of these stresses and the planes on which they act. [20] 3. A truss of 7.5m is loaded as shown in Figure 3. Find reactions and forces in all the members of the truss. [20]

Figure 3 4. A timber joist, 100 mm wide and 200 mm deep, is freely supported over a span of 4 meters. It is subjected to a bending moment of 30,000 cm kg at the central section, the trace OY of the plane of loading being inclined at 300 to the principal axis OY. Locate the neutral axis and calculate the maximum bending stress induced. If the bending moment is due to a total load of 600 kg uniformly distributed over the whole span calculate the deection. Take E = 105 kg/cm2 . [20] 5. (a) The internal diameter of a hollow shaft is two third of its external diameter. Compare its resistance to torsion with that of a solid shaft of the same weight and material. [10] (b) A steel shaft, 50 mm diameter and 500 mm long, is subjected to a twisting couple of 11105 N.mm, the total angle of twist being 0.60 . Find the maximum shear stress developed in the shaft and the modulus of rigidity. [10]

Code No: C1CE01-C1104 6. A tapering chimney of circular section 45 metres high, 3.6 metres external diameter at the base and 2.4 metres external diameter at the top is subjected to a uniform wind pressure of 1.0KN/m2 of projected area. Calculate the overturning moment at the base. If the weight of the chimney is 6000 KN and the internal diameter at the base is 1.2 metres, Calculate the maximum and minimum stress-intensities induced in the base section. [20] 7. Two co-axial springs, one placed inside the other and made of steel wires of the same dia. support an axial compressive load P on a rigid plate on the top of the springs. The number of coils in the two springs are 10 and 12 while the mean radii of the coils are 40mm and 60mm. Both the springs are of equal length before loading. Calculate P, if the wire dia. is 8mm and the shear stress in the wire is not to exceed 800N/mm2 . [20] 8. A compound cylinder is formed by shrinking one tube on to another, the nal dimensions being, internal diameter 120 mm, external diameter 240 mm, diameter at junction 180 mm. if after shrinking on, the radial pressure at the common surface is 8N/mm2 , calculate the initial hoop stresses across the sections of the inner and outer tubes. If a uid under a pressure of 60N/mm2 , is admitted inside the compound cylinder, calculate the nal stresses set up in the sections of the pipes. [20]
