PART ONE: THE HUNT

1.0 INTRODUCTION
Drive hunting or drive fishing is a method of whaling where dolphins and whales are driven into a small bay or onto a beach in order to harvest them. Its often referred to as the Oikomi method () which literally means to chase, drive, or pursue. The method utilizes noise created by banging metal pipes in the water; the pipes are mounted on vessels referred to as banger boats. The noise produces an acoustic barrier that will eventually herd animals into the shallows or bay where they can be easily harvested. Today, drive hunts continue to be practiced in the Solomon Islands, the Faroe Islands & Japan. In addition to killing the animals for meat and pest control there is a small percentage of animals which are live-capture, animals selected usually for sale to the aquarium or marine park industry. Statistical analysis of numbers reported to the Japanese Fisheries Agency between the years 2000-2009 suggest that animals taken through live-capture account for 5.5 % of the total catch during this ten year timeframe. Due to mortality and other events not all of the animals taken for live-capture would be considered for sale to an aquarium or marine park. This document will examine some of the reported results from each years hunt (Part 1) and focus on establishing a baseline inventory of cetaceans obtained through drive fisheries practices (Part 2). Its important to note that the majority of dolphins and whales are obtained through drive fisheries located in Japan, specifically Taiji (Wakayama), however other countries of origin will be noted when applicable.

2.0 THE NUMBERS: A LOOK AT RESULTS BY YEAR & SPECIES

The hunting of cetaceans through drive hunting currently occurs in two prefectures in Japan, Wakyama (Taiji) and Shizuoka (Futo) although Futo has not participated in a drive hunt since 2004. Due to this inactivity the numbers below are indicative of drive hunt activity in Wakayama only with notes to any hunts taking place elsewhere. The following numbers are based on the calendar or fiscal year which actually overlaps two fishing seasons (example: calendar year 2008 contains numbers for the end of the 2007/2008 season and the start of the 2008/2009 season). In general the drive hunt season runs from the first of September to the end of March and then another 30 days (till the end of April) for the hunting of false killer whales (okigondou or ), pilot whales (gondou or ) and Rissos dolphins (hanagondou or ). Between the years 2000-2009 a total of 13,681 small cetaceans were killed by the drive fisheries in Wakayama (Taiji) and an additional 765 animals were live-captured. Please note that the numbers in Table 1 (pg. 3) only reflect catch statistics for Taiji (Wakayama). However, 1

in 2004 Futo participated in a drive hunt that officially resulted in the catch of 24 bottlenose dolphins of which 9 were killed and 15 were live capture. Observers from environmental groups on site in Futo claim that the take was actually higher but there has been no other verification. Futo has not resumed its drive hunt since 2005. Including the animals from Futo results in a total kill of 13, 690. See Table 1, next page for each years breakdown of species either killed or live-captured

** K = kill, (LC )= live-capture ** in 2004 Futo captured 24 bottlenose dolphins according to official statistic however some conservation groups suggest that the total was actually higher ** these numbers are based on catch statistics as compiled by the Japanese Fisheries Agency Catch statistics from Save Japan Dolphins are listed below but not included in the above table as the numbers are compiled from volunteers on site in Taiji but do not reflect official statistics as released by the JFA. The numbers reflect total small cetaceans killed but does not include animals that were live-capture or released. 2008/2009 season: 1,484 2009/2010 season: 1,336 2010/2011 season: 1,190 2011/2012 season: 726-786

Annual hunts resulted in an average of 1445 animals captured per year with minimum total catch of 868 occurring in 2003 and at maximum total catch of 2,008 in the year 2002. Average total kill totaled 1,368 animal with maximum total kill of 2,009 in the year 2000 and minimum total kill of 842 in 2003. Live capture resulted in an average of 77.5 animals per year with minimum live-capture of 28 in 2001 and maximum total live capture of 125 in 2006. Examinations of the average numbers reveal 95% of animals captured through drive hunt fisheries were slaughtered while the remaining 5% were taken as live-capture. The chart below shows hunt results by calendar year with total catch (blue), total kill (red) and total live capture (green) represented. (Note: total catch = total kill + total live capture)

The chart below compares the number of animals killed by year versus those captured between the years 2000-2009. Total Kill = RED, Total Live Capture = GREEN.

2.1. 2011/2012 Season (01 Sep 2011 to 27 Feb 2012*)

The following numbers for the 2011/2012 season are not official statistics but rather reflect reports given by witness on-site in Taiji, Japan during the season. The 2011/2012 season started on September 1st, 2011 and has appeared to have ended early, at the time of this publication the last hunt was on February 27th, 2012. * It is possible that other species could be harvested up to April 30 th, 2012 and this document will be updated should that occur. During this season an estimated 823 animals have been driven into the cove at Taiji, Japan. . Of this total 719 (87%) were killed, 48 (6%) were released, 51 (6%) were livecapture. The status of the remaining five individuals (1%), false killer whales, is unknown. A total of eight species were captured, sold & killed including: Bottlenose Dolphins (T. gilli), False Killer Whales (P. crasssidens), Pacific White-sided Dolphins (L. obliquidens), Pantropical Spotted Dolphins (S. attenuata), Risso's Dolphins (G. griseus), Short-finned 5

During this season an estimated 1,297 animals have driven into the cove at Taiji, Japan. Of this total 849 (65%) have been killed, 181 (14%) have been released and 98 (8%) were live-capture. The status of the remaining 169 (13%) individuals is unknown. Species captured, sold & killed include: Bottlenose Dolphins (54%), Risso's Dolphins (4%), Striped Dolphins (20%), Pantropical Spotted Dolphins (2%), Pacific White-sided Dolphins (2%) and Short-finned Pilot Whales (4%).
