OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS LEMAG Ship Performance Monitor

1.

System overview

The LEMAG Ship Performance Monitor consists of the following main components: LEMAG Shaftpower measuring device with option fuel temperature measurement and fuel oil consumption input (included in delivery) Ultrasonic flow meter system FLEXIM ADM 7207 (included in delivery) Ship speed log system (for example NAVIKNOT 111,not included in scope of delivery) Monitoring PC (not included in scope of delivery) with USB to RS485-Serial Hub (included in scope of delivery) Monitoring software running on Windows XP (included in delivery)

2.1 The LEMAG Shaftpower measuring system The LEMAG Shaftpower measuring system is designed to measure: Shaft revolution Shaft torque Shaft power

on intermediate shafts with a diameter above 320 mm and a revolution below 200 rpm. The system can be applied to ship intermediate shafts for fixed pitch propeller operation (solid shaft) as well as for pitch propeller systems (hollow shaft). The system was designed for high accuracy and repeatability for long time operation with no serviceable parts. The system allows retrofitting of already built ships and consists of two shaft rings clamped onto the shaft with a pre defined distance between both rings. The twist of the shaft caused by the torque applied to the shaft while driving the propeller with the engine is measured by means of 2 high sensitive but yet ruggedized and high accurate length measuring sensors mounted on a special sensor retainer between the two clamped shaft rings. The signal of the two sensors is digitized and transmitted via a 433 MHz RF transmitter from the rotating shaft to the stationary receiver mounted beside the shaft. The necessary electrical power for operation of the two sensors and the RF transmitter is induced into a coil wired around the shaft by a stationary power transmitter coil mounted close to the shaft. The whole system is therefore completely contact free and the sensor signals are digitized on the shaft giving a high immunity against external noise sources.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS LEMAG Ship Performance Monitor

Two proximity switches, mounted together with the stationary power transmitter coil, are sensing a rotating sensing plate and allow for measurement of rotational speed and rotating direction of the shaft. A small electronic box (Stationary Shaft Unit A2) is mounted close to the shaft to supply the power transmitter coil with a 10 kHz sine wave current. It receives the signal of the 2 proximity switches and has a RF receiver to receive the signal of the 2 rotating length measuring sensors. The stationary shaft unit transmits the signals to a touch screen operated Panel Unit A1 mounted in the ECR via a RS 485 serial communication channel. The stationary shaft unit mounted close to the shaft needs a 115/230V AC power supply. A built in DC/DC converter powers the whole system with 24V DC. The panel unit A1 is supplied by the internal 24V DC supply. The panel unit A1 has a built in RS422/RS485 serial output port which transmits the shaft revolution, shaft torque and shaft power to the monitoring PC in the ECR. With the option fuel consumption measurement the actual fuel consumption is also transmitted via this serial port. For further details see the Operator Manual for LEMAG Shaftpower.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS LEMAG Ship Performance Monitor

2.2. The LEMAG fuel oil temperature measuring system The LEMAG Shaftpower measuring system has the option to measure the fuel oil temperature. This option will be used, if the option fuel consumption measurement is applied and only a volume flow measuring instrument is installed but the mass flow must be calculated. With these options the user has to insert the specific gravity of the fuel at the reference temperature of 15 in the panel unit A1 and the system C calculates the actual specific fuel gravity according the actual fuel temperature and by using the volume flow delivered by an external measuring device the actual mass flow of the fuel oil can be calculated. To allow retrofitting of the fuel oil temperature measurement without hot work a contact temperature sensor Pt100 is utilized. The sensor is clamped onto the surface of the fuel pipe using a belt system. The accuracy of the temperature measurement can be diminished caused by heat losses and heat resistance between the Pt100 sensor and the fuel oil. A good contact to the surface of the fuel pipe and possible isolation of the sensor against the environment can lower these influences. A small connection box A15 is mounted close to the Pt100 temperature sensor. This connection box contains a Pt100-to-4-to20mA converter. This converter transforms the Pt100 sensor into a two-wire measuring device. The operator panel unit A1 has a built-in 4-to-20mA analogue input and is programmed to read in the fuel oil temperature. 2.3. The ultrasonic flow meter system FLEXIM ADM 7207 To allow measurement of the fuel oil consumption also for retrofitting and avoiding hot work during installation an ultrasonic flow meter system was chosen. Ultrasonic transducers are clamped onto the fuel oil pipe with a distinct distance. A central unit, mounted close to the two sensors, supplies these sensors with the necessary electrical signals. The central unit is operated by a signal processor, which in turn calculates the time the signal needs to travel through the walls of the piping and the medium flowing inside the pipe. Based on this it calculates the actual volume flow inside the pipe. The actual volume flow is shown on a small display in the central unit ADM7207. Depending on the design of the fuel supply system of the ship it might be necessary to measure the difference of two volume flows as a measure of the actual fuel oil consumption of the main engine. The ADM 7207 central unit has a digital output with open collector capability. The output pulses are proportional the measured volume flow. The LEMAG Shaftpower operator panel unit A1 has a digital input which counts the number of pulses and calculates the actual volume flow. For details see the Operator manual for the ultrasonic flow meter system FLEXIM ADM 7207.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS LEMAG Ship Performance Monitor

2.4. The ship speed log system To calculate of the fuel oil consumption in accordance with the miles travelled through water in a given time a signal for the actual ship speed has to be supplied. Because there is already a speed log system installed onboard of the ship this signal is used for the LEMAG Ship Performance Monitor. The ship speed log system has either a serial output RS422, which gives a cyclic message using a standard NMEA183 message frame containing the ship speed travelling through water, or a pulse output giving a known number of pulses per nautical mile travelled through water. If only a pulse output is available a suitable converter must be used which converts the pulses into the known NMEA183 serial data stream. This converter can be supplied by LEMAG. The RS422 signal is connected to port P2 of a USB to Serial Hub connected to the monitoring PC located in the ECR (see drawing 7.1 in chapter 7). The Windows software LEMAG Ship Performance Monitor installed on this PC is capable of receiving this messages and extracting the actual ship speed for further processing and calculations. 2.5. The Monitoring PC with USB to Serial Hub Modern PCs are usually equipped with at least one USB port to connect to external devices. The drawback is that the USB port is limited to transmit signals for a cable length of only a few meters. To connect the signal of the ship speed log with a RS422 output it is necessary to convert the RS482 signal to USB close to the Monitoring PC in the ECR. Also the LEMAG Shaftpower system uses a RS422 output for transmitting the shaftpower and fuel consumption information. Included in the delivery is a USB to Serial Hub. This converter enhances the PC with 2 serial RS422/485 ports via the USB port. The converter is powered by the USB port and needs no external power supply but must be located close to the PC.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS LEMAG Ship Performance Monitor

2.6. The Ship Performance Monitoring software The Ship Performance Monitoring software will be installed on the monitoring PC in the ECR. The software reads in the ship speed delivered from the ship speed log by means of the second RS422 input port from the USB to Serial Hub (port P2). The shaft revolution, shaft torque, shaft power and fuel consumption is also read in by the software delivered from the LEMAG Shaftpower system by means of the first RS422 in port from the USB to Serial Hub ( port P1). Based on the user changeable setup data stored in the software the actual load point is presented in the load diagram with propeller curve. Also the actual data for shaft speed, shaft torque, shaft power as well as fuel consumption and ship speed are presented in a data grid. Based on these measurements the calculated specific fuel oil consumption SFOC and fuel oil consumption with relation to miles travelled in water are presented. The software has several logging capabilities, both manual and automatic with pre settable start/stop time and long term logging.

3. Installation
3.1. Installation of the LEMAG Shaftpower measuring system Please refer to the Operator manual for LEMAG Shaftpower. This describes the installation process and system setup in depth and will not be repeated here. Important! Check the ship AC supply voltage level (115V or 230V AC) and set voltage selector switch inside stationary shaft unit A2 accordingly before connecting the system to the supply voltage. Finally connect the serial communication output at terminal X2 of the shaft power operator panel unit SP A1 with serial port P1 ( left hand side ) of the USB to Serial Hub in the ECR close to the monitoring PC (see wiring diagram 7.1 in chapter 7).

The options LEMAG fuel oil temperature measurement and fuel oil consumption measurement are described in the following chapters.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS LEMAG Ship Performance Monitor

3.2. Installation of the LEMAG fuel oil temperature measuring system A fuel oil temperature measurement is necessary to compensate for temperature dependent changes of the fuel oil specific gravity. For retrofitting existing ships it is necessary to choose a measurement system which can be installed avoiding hot work on piping already containing fuel oil. We opted for a contact temperature sensor of type Pt100. These sensors are pre-manufactured with a clamp belt and can be adjusted to certain pipe diameters. Find a location close to the measuring location for the ultrasonic flow meter. Also note the max. cable length of 2.50 m to connect to the connection box A15. The contact position for the temperature sensor should be free from paint on a length of 30 mm and a width of 8mm. This ensures lowest thermal resistance between pipe surface and temperature sensor and highest accuracy of the measurement. Now open the clamp belt and wrap it around the pipe and locate the temperature sensor to the contact location. Now fix the clamp belt using the built in slot and repaint the contact location to protect the pipe from rust. Mount the connection box A15 on a vibration free location close to the temperature sensor (distance lower than 2.50 m) and the central unit of the fuel flow meter. Connect the two wires of the temperature sensor Pt100 (red and white) to the 3 pole input terminal of the Pt100-to-4/20mA converter located in the connection box A15. Connect the white sensor wire to terminal pin marked white and the red sensor wire to terminal pin marked red. Make sure to have the short circuit connection wire redred connected (see wiring diagram 7.1 in chapter 7). Connect the cable from Shaftpower operator panel unit SP A1 to the output terminals + and of the Pt100-to-4/20mA converter inside connection box A15 (see wiring diagram 7.1 in chapter 7). If the Shaftpower measuring system is switched on a DC current between 4 to 20 mA ( depending on sensor temperature ) should be present if a current measuring instrument is connected in line with the + or wire. If the current is flowing check the temperature reading on the Shaftpower panel unit:

3.3.2 Electrical connection of the power supply to the central unit ADM 7207 The ultrasonic flow meter system FLEXIM ADM 7207 requires an external power supply of 115 to 230 V AC. Insert the power supply cable with cable gland into the bottom right bore of the central unit ADM 7207. At terminal block KL3 connect the power supply as follows:

3.3.3 Electrical connection of the digital output signal of the central unit ADM 7207 The ultrasonic flow meter system FLEXIM ADM 7207 is capable of delivering a digital output signal to the Shaftpower panel unit. This output is an open collector transistor output. The terminal numbers are depending on the actual hardware and given on the screen of the ADM7207 during setup of the system. Most probably they are terminal block KL2, P1+/P1- or KL2, P5a(+)/P5b(-). Use the terminal block KL2, P1+/P1- or P5a (+)/P5b(-) of the ADM 7207 central unit for connecting the cable to the Shaftpower operator panel unit, using the connection box A15 as an intermediate terminal distributor. 3.3.5 Mounting the ultrasonic transducers The correct positioning of the ultrasonic transducers is crucial for accurate and reliable fuel oil flow measurement. An in depth description about the measuring principle, optimum mounting position and calculation of transducer location can be found in the operator manual FLEXIM ADM7207. For the measurement of the fuel oil flow at least two ultrasonic transducers have to be mounted to the fuel oil pipe. This is true only for systems where the measured fuel flow is the direct consumption of the main engine. On some ships a second pair of ultrasonic transducers has to be applied, where the difference of both pairs is the direct fuel oil consumption of the main engine. There is a different engraving on top of every transducer. The transducers are mounted correctly if the engravings on the two transducers form an arrow as shown:

The mounting position (both sensors on one side of the fuel oil pipe, or on opposite sides) and the distance between both sensors depends on: diameter of fuel oil pipe, material of fuel oil pipe, lining of fuel oil pipe, wall thickness of fuel oil pipe, form of the fuel oil pipe, fuel oil properties.

For the calculation of the valid mounting position an external program can be used. The central unit ADM7207 also calculates the mounting position based on inserted setup data. Possible mounting positions are:

The valid mounting position however is given by the central unit ADM7207.

Use the included tension straps to mount the transducers to the pipe:

3.3.6 Troubleshooting The following errors have been made during previous installations: 1. Positioning the sensors The sensors must be installed on a straight part of a pipe, far away from any curves or other interruptions, as described in the Flexim instruction manual. The length of the straight piece of pipe must be at least 15 x the diameter of the pipe. The inlet should have a length of at least 10 x the diameter of the pipe, i.e. be 2/3 of the straight length of pipe and the outlet should have a length of 5 x the diameter of the pipe, i.e. be 1/3 of the straight length of pipe. 2. Sensor distance Please also refer to chapter 4.3. for measuring the sensor distance The distance between the sensors must be determined as accurately as possible.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS LEMAG Ship Performance Monitor

3.3.7. Connecting the ship speed log system The ship speed log system is already installed and not included in delivery of LEMAG. Speed log systems usually give an asynchronical serial output signal conforming to standard NMEA 183. The electrical characteristic conforms to standard RS422. Where only a pulse output is available a converter box, which converts the pulses to the asynchronous serial NMEA183 signal, has to be applied. The transmitter uses 2 wires (Tx+/B and Tx-/A) for transmitting the serial data. Connect a cable from RS422/NMEA183 output of speed log system to serial port P2 (right hand side) of the USB to Serial Hub. Connect the terminal Tx+ of the speed log with terminal R+ of port P2 of the USB to Serial Hub. Connect the terminal Tx- of the speed log with terminal R- of port P2 of the USB to Serial Hub. The data are transmitted using the following data format: 4800 Baud, 8 data bits, one stop bit, no parity, no handshake.

4.2. Setting up the LEMAG fuel oil temperature measuring system The fuel oil temperature measuring system only needs to be set up, if the Pt100-to4/20mA converter, mounted in connection box A15, is changed. When changing the Pt100 sensor, no new setup is necessary, provided the cable length between Pt100 sensor and connection box A15 does not change. The actual temperature is calculated using a two-point interpolation of the actual Pt100 resistance with relation to resistance at 20 and resistance at 150 C C. To setup the system first connect a resistor of 107.8 Ohm, representing a temperature of 20 instead of the Pt100 sensor. C, Now select the menu function Setup Fuel Measurement on the Shaftpower panel unit:

Click ACK twice to get to the fuel temperature measurement. Note the changing value current ADU. Insert this value for ADU1. Click ACK until page is closed. Now connect a resistor of 157.3 Ohm, representing a temperature of 150 instead C, of the Pt100 sensor. Again select the menu function Setup Fuel Measurement on the Shaftpower panel unit. Click ACK twice to get to the fuel temperature measurement. Note the changing value current ADU. Insert this value for ADU2. Click ACK until page is closed. Finally check the temperature calculation of the system. Select the menu function Setup Fuel Measurement again on the Shaftpower panel unit. Click ACK twice and watch the value Ftemp: with different resistors connected. When a resistor of 107.8 Ohm is connected, a temperature of 20 should be C shown. When a resistor of 157.3 Ohm is connected, a temperature of 150 should C be shown. Finally connect the Pt100 sensor and watch the temperature Ftemp on the Shaftpower panel unit.

4.3. Setting up the ultrasonic flow meter system FLEXIM ADM 7207 How to set up the ultrasonic flow meter is described in depth in the ADM7207 Operator Manual. Because we have two different fuel volume flow measuring systems, one system uses only 1 pair of ultrasonic transducers for direct fuel consumption measurement and another system uses two pairs measuring the difference of two volume flows, unfortunately we will have different digital output presentations of the actual fuel consumption. Hence the setup procedure for both systems is slightly different. Systems with 1 pair of ultrasonic transducers In these systems we use only one pair of ultrasonic transducers which are connected to input channel A. After Power On of the flow meter system ADM7207 push the button BRK to get to the setup main menu: PARmea opt sf Parameter Select option >Par< ( use cursor keys <4 and 6>) and press button ENTER. The system reads in the sensor data for sensor channel A. Then the following message appears: Outer Diameter 76.3 mm Dial in the outer diameter of the fuel oil pipe and acknowledge with ENTER. The next screen allows for insertion of the fuel oil pipe wall thickness: Wall Thickness 5.2 mm Insert the actual value and press ENTER. (The ADM7207 has pre-programmed medium properties for different media e.g. water, but not for heavy fuel oil). Push button ENTER to insert the actual medium properties: c-Medium 1200.0 MIN m/s

The first value is the minimum speed of sound through the medium. The next value is the maximum speed of sound through the medium: c-Medium 1600.0 MAX m/s

(The actual speed of sound of the medium must be inbetween the given min and max. Value. It is used to calculate the distance between both sensors. ) The next value is the kinematic viscosity: Kinem.Viscosity 14.00 mm2/s (It is used to calculate the flow profile correction value and the transducer distance). The next input value is the density of the medium: Density 0.96 g/cm3

This value is only needed if we want to measure the mass flow. If we are only interested in volume flow any given value doesnt change the measuring result. Next the system asks for the medium temperature: Medium Temperat. 95.0 C It is also used for calculating the transducer distance. Next the system shows the detected transducer: Transducer M2N72987 The next input value describes the length of the additional transducer extension cable: Additional cable

Systems with 1 pair of ultrasonic transducers The ultrasonic fuel oil flow meter system FLEXIM ADM 7207 measures the volume flow in a single fuel oil pipe. It gives an output pulse on an open collector output every time 0,5 litres have passed the measurement zone. For this type of measuring system we need the LEMAG Shaftpower Operator Panel Unit A1 with firmware version FCONS104.H66. In the LEMAG Shaftpower Operator Panel Unit A1 over a period of 1 min the number of pulses is measured. This is done every 5 seconds. To calculate the mass flow the system needs the following information: fuel oil gravity in kg/m3 ( at reference temperature 15 degC), actual fuel oil temperature in degC (measured by Pt100 sensor), fuel oil volume flow between two pulses in l/pulse.

The setup data for Fuel oil gravity and Fuel oil volume flow counter output signal gain (l/pulse) have to be inserted in menu point Setup Fuel Measurement. In the Operator Panel Unit A1:

During operation only the actual fuel oil gravity has to be inserted. The fuel flow counter gain value remains at 0.5 l/pulse (if also set so in FLEXIM ADM7207).

Operation

The LEMAG Shaftpower measurement system is an instant running system. It has local visualisation capabilities via the Operator Panel Unit A1 mounted in the engine control room cabinet. Using the touch screen buttons Page1, Page2, Page3 and Setup, different pages can be selected (see Operator Manual LEMAG Shaftpower). However the measuring results, Shaft RPM, Shaft Torque, Shaft Power, are transmitted every 5 seconds to the Ship Performance Monitoring PC. The fuel oil temperature is measured by the contact Pt100 sensor and also transmitted every 5 seconds to the Ship Performance Monitoring PC. The FLEXIM ultrasonic fuel oil flow meter is an instant running system. It has local data output by means of an LCD display in the central unit ADM7207, mounted in the engine room. It gives a pulse output to the LEMAG Shaftpower Operator Panel Unit A1. This panel unit calculates the actual Fuel oil consumption as well as the specific fuel oil consumption SFOC. To calculate the Fuel oil consumption the LEMAG Shaftpower Operator Panel Unit A1 needs the actual fuel oil gravity. Because this gravity is temperature dependent the Operator Panel Unit measures the actual fuel oil temperature and needs the fuel oil gravity at a reference temperature of 15 deg C as a manual setup value. If a different fuel oil is used, the user has to manually input the fuel oil gravity for the actual fuel at the reference temperature of 15 deg C. This has to be done in the LEMAG Shaftpower Operator Panel Unit, using menu point Setup Fuel. Meas.:

Only the value Fuel gravity has to be changed. The other setup data is not influenced and must not be changed here. The actual ship speed is measured by the ships speed log instrument. It is an instant running system and transmits the actual ship speed every 0,5 seconds to the Ship Performance Monitoring PC.

Background information The USB to Serial Hub is connected via USB to the monitoring PC. The hub is delivered with a Windows device driver program. During installation of the hub this device driver program is installed in the PC. Finally the PC has two serial ports COMx and COMy. Where x and y stands for a number of 1 to 256. The number x and y is given by Windows during first installation. For this hub two consecutive numbers are given by Windows, for example COM3 for port P1 and COM4 for port P2 or COM5 for port P1 and COM6 for port P2. The actual COM port numbers can be investigated: click on Start, click on Settings, select Control panel, select System, select Hardware, select Device manager, click on Ports (COM & LPT), Finally you will see a picture like this:

Note the lines MOXA Nport . Port 1 (COM5) and . Port 2 (COM6). For this installation, the port Port1 for shaftpower measurement has the COM port number of 5 where the port Port2 for ship speed measurement has the COM port number of 6. Attention! If you select a different USB slot for connecting the USB to Serial Hub Windows will change the COM port numbers! So always use the same USB slot for connecting the USB to Serial Hub to the PC. 6. Check the COM port settings in the Ship Performance Monitoring software.
