Sports day gone for 2012 Week long, School Games announced!
Hot on the heels of the national launch of the School Games initiative, SHS PE department have announced their own School Games schedule. Gone has the traditional one day sports celebration and we will welcome London 2012 into our thoughts with a week long Sports Festival. The opening ceremony will take place on Monday 9th July and the sports start with Swimming in the afternoon. Tuesday sees Football and Hockey, Wednesday, Basketball and Badminton before the whole school athletics event at Longford Park on Thursday 12th July. The final sport is Gymnastics on the 13th and the curtain comes down with the closing ceremony that afternoon. The event will maximise participation but students will also be able to buy tickets for each event to watch priced at 1 per event or 5 for a weeks pass! More details will come out soon.

My Olympic Dreams.. We speak to staff to ask their thoughts on London 2012. This week, Mr Hill, media manager and huge help to the work of the PE department! What is your interest in Sport? I like to watch sport and listen to sport mainly football occasionally I play. I do get hooked on the Olympic games though and like sports tournaments in general. I support Manchester United. What are you most looking forward to about London 2012? Field and track events - I want to see how a GB football side fair at the games. I like to watch the boxing also. I think we have a good chance at some medals and may come in the top 5 overall. What is your favourite Olympic memory? I have three; Redgrave getting his last medal. Kelly Holmes winning the double with Steve Cram commentary and Seb Coe winning Gold in Moscow.

Gary Lineker is the former England, Leicester, Everton, Barcelona and Spur striker who is the all time England World Cup top goal scorer and 2nd in the all time England goals list behind Sir Bobby Charlton. He now presents Match of the Day amongst various other BBC Sport shows. Gary is a fluent Spanish speaker after he learned during his time at Barcelona.

In January, the start of the Olympic year, the PE department launched the Track to Success initiative and it began last month. Yr 10 GCSE students and Yr 9 Sport Science students visited Salford City College after previously visiting Trafford College, and also went to Liverpool John Moores University. The aim to create a pathway in sport from Primary school via the SSCo program to University level study. A full report will appear next month.
The schools first ever Water Polo team took part in the first Trafford Competition at Stretford Leisure Centre last week. The team did amazingly well and made the final where they only lost by one point to Stretford Grammar who have been playing over a year! Well done!
