Secondary Lesson Plan Template

Title: World War I: Role of America and impact of the War at Home Description (1-2 sentences): This lesson focuses on the impact that the US had on the outcome of the war and the impact of the war on the United States. Unit Essential Question: What was the role of the United States in World War I? Subject: American History: World War I Instructional Time: 1 hour 30 minutes Students grade level: 11th grade Standard(s) to be addressed (Iowa Core 6-8 or 9-12): 5.8a Explain the economic and cultural factors that led to US entry into WWI. 5.8b Trace the course of WWI and its results. Resources used in this lesson: Powerpoint and projector Learning Objectives that meet the standard above (no more than three): Students will be able to explain the role of the United States in the Allies winning World War I. Students will understand the role that the war had on the economy and life in the United States. Guiding question for this lesson: Why was the role of the United States so important in determining the outcome of the war? Motivational strategies that you will use: For this lesson I tried to look at different aspects of the war (new techniques of war and the draft) and relate them to today. When looking at particular war heroes, I tried to find interesting stories about each that would interest students and help them remember the important American war heroes. Type of instructional method(s) used in this lesson: Lecture Group discussion Admit Slip

Procedures - list carefully and completely what the students will do Admit Slip: Do you believe that killing is war is justified? What is your stance and what would you do if you were asked to kill an enemy in war? Have students discuss their thoughts on this question. Lecture using powerpoint and group discussion. The following discussion questions will be used to stimulate discussion. -Can you think of other ways that would be an effective way to build up the military? How would you feel about having a draft today?

-Which weapon made the biggest impact in WWI? Which weapon has the biggest impact today? What is the impact of nuclear weapons? -How does the Espionage and Sedition Acts contradict the First Amendment? -What was the impact of the flu epidemic on the economy and United States? Spend some time answering questions about the study guide or any other questions students may have leading into the test. Technology needed for this lesson: Projector Adaptations needed to meet student needs (ELL, SPED, etc.): The Powerpoint provides a clear outline for the students to help guide them in their note taking. Group discussion will also allow students to hear the thoughts and opinions of their classmates. This is helpful for many ELL and Special Education students to hear the information presented by their classmates. Thinking strategies used in this lesson: Students will be asked to compare and contrast new techniques of war in WWI and new techniques of war today. Students will need to analyze the contradiction between the Espionage and Sedition Act and the 1st Amendment. Assignment (what happens after this lesson; if no assignment, write none): None Assessment of the objectives for this lesson (how do you know what the students learning): I will be able to assess student learning through their admit slip responses that I will collect on the day of the test. I will also be able to assess student learning through their questions and class discussion.
