Controlling the Power of Computer in LAN

Login to Dstor Card via IE browser, the default IP address of Dstor Card is 192.168.7.253. Please make sure your control PC is in the same network segment, such as 192.168.7.xxx, otherwise you may not login the Dstor Card. Or you may use Installation Wizard to change the default IP address, please refer Appendix B to learn how to use Installation Wizard. Key in the IP address you have setup for the Dstor Card. The default IP address is 192.168.7.253 You may use Installation Wizard to change it, or setup your control PC to same network segment as 192.168.7.xxx to login

Appendix A: Controlling Dstor Card over the Internet

Resolving the remote access challenge

When implementing controlling Dstor Card or other remote access solutions, administrators commonly face the following challenges: A Network Address Translation (NAT) or router environment in which the host computers that are connected to the device do not have a public IP address A remote computing environment in which mobile, dial-in users need to connect to one or more network hosts (dial-in, network-out connections)

Firewall Solution
A firewall limits a networks exposure to unauthorized access by limiting the number of external, inbound entry points. Network devices inside the firewall remain hidden from any computer that is outside the firewall. For a remote user outside the firewall to connect to an Dstor Card that is inside the firewall using a browser, the network must be configured to allow inbound and outbound traffic on the Dstor Card TCP port 80. For a growing number of organizations, exposing additional entry points to their networks for remote access is a security concern, and administrators are hesitant to open access to the Dstor Card TCP port 80. If you have an environment in which a firewall is configured to block Dstor Card TCP port 80, you can adopt a VPN solution combined PAT (IP Forwarding). The remote user can control an Dstor Card as follows: Connect to the network using a trusted VPN. Access the private IP of Dstor Card by Internet browser (Exam IE).

Network Address Translation and Router Solution

Network Address Translation (NAT) is a technology that lets multiple computers within a private network access the Internet by sharing a single routable IP address. NAT is increasing in popularity, especially among small business and home users, because of the scarcity and cost prohibitiveness of registered IP addresses. NAT provides a basic level of security because it makes it possible to limit the number of addresses that access the Internet, thus decreasing a networks exposure. In this environment, all inbound and outbound communications between a computer within the private network and the Internet are routed through a NAT device. The NAT device handles the address substitution, IP address and port mapping, and message routing. For this reason, remote access to computers that are within the private network from outside the network presents a challenge. Host computers that are within the private network are hidden from the outside world. Remote users can connect to the NAT device using the external IP address. However, because the remote user cannot provide the port mapping information that is required for proper routing, the NAT device cannot complete the connection to the host. Depending on your environment, the following solutions are recommended: One or more hosts are hidden behind a NAT device. Adopt a VPN solution. The remote user can control an Dstor Card as follows: Connect to the network using a trusted VPN. Access the private IP of Dstor Card by Internet browser (Exam IE). A single Dstor Card is hidden behind a NAT device. Configure the NAT table to direct all incoming data from the Internet that destination TCP port is 80 to that Dstor Card. Multiple Dstor Cards are hidden behind a NAT device. Assign a unique TCP port number to each Dstor Card by PAT (IP Forwarding). Configure the NAT table to direct all incoming data from these TCP ports to the appropriate Dstor Card TCP port 80.

Examples for Controlling the Power of Computer over the Internet

Using PAT (Port Network Address Translation) function of the firewall
PAT also called as DNAT, Port forwarding, Port-Redirection, Port Mapping and virtual server. If your Dstor Cards IP address behind the firewall that is Dstor Cards IP is a private IP. You should configure the firewall to open TCP 80 port and map the public IP and TCP 80 port (or other port) to the Dstor Card private IP and TCP 80 port. In following, assume: Your public IP address is 60.16.100.10 The LAN subnet is 192.168.1.0 / 255.255.255.0 The Dstor Card IP address is 192.168.1.253

Scenario I Simple PAT Router

In scenario I, your router has a simple PAT function that can only redirect the public port to the private port with the same port number as the public port. - 11 -

Setting AboCom ADSL Router CAS3047 (Virtual Server)

Method: By Port Application (port): 80 Port Type: TCP Single/Range: Single Local Server IP: 192.168.1.253 Click <Add> button to add this configuration

- 12 -

Scenario II Full PAT Router

In scenario II, your router has a full PAT function that can redirect the public port to the private port with any port number. Setting for D-Link DI604 router (Advanced >Virtual Server)

If the public TCP port 80 is not used, you can set as following: Name: The name referencing the Dstor Card. Private IP: 192.168.1.253 Private Port: 80. Protocol Type: TCP Public Port: 80 else if public TCP port 80 is used, you can set as following: Name: The name referencing the Dstor Card. Private IP: 192.168.1.253 Private Port: 80. Protocol Type: TCP Public Port: 8000 Access the Dstor Card over the Internet: You just enter http://60.16.200.18 or http://60.16.200.18:8000 by IE browser.

- 13 -

Setting for Linksys Cable/DSL VPN Router BEFVP41 V2 (UPnP Forwarding)

If the public TCP port 80 is not used, you can set as following: Application: HTTP. Ext. Port: 80. TCP UPD : TCP Int Port: 80. Private IP: 192.168.1.253 Enable: Yes else if public TCP port 80 is used, you can set as following: To select a blank row at the bottom (there are three blank rows) Name: Dstor Card 1. Ext. Port: 8000. TCP UPD : TCP Int Port: 80. Private IP: 192.168.1.253 Enable: Yes Access the Dstor Card over the Internet: You just enter http://60.16.200.18 or http://60.16.200.18:8000 by IE browser. Setting Linux-based Router If the public TCP port 80 is not used, you can set as following: Iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -i eth0 --dport 80 -j DNAT --to 192.168.1.253:80 else if public TCP port 80 is used, you can set as following: Iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -i eth0 --dport 8000 -j DNAT --to 192.168.1.253:80

Using VPN
If you can establish a VPN tunnel from the Internet to your office, you can control the power of computer equipped with Dstor Card just like you do in the LAN.
