TRACTION Is the application of a pulling force of the body.

Traction is used to minimize muscle spasms; to reduce, align, and immobilize fractures; to reduce deformity; and to increase space between opposing surfaces. 2 ways: Skin traction - Skin traction applies pull to an affected body structure by straps attached to the skin surrounding the structure Advantage: there is no need to pass any instrument through the tissues. Disadvantages: (1) You cannot apply more than 5 kg, (2) joints which are crossed by the strapping cannot flex and exercise. (3) The patients skin may become sensitive to the strapping. (4) Skin traction is poorly tolerated in old patients and easily causes blisters. (5) If it is not carefully managed, the strapping slips off completely. (6) It is very uncomfortable in hot climates. (7) It can occasionally cause ischemia followed by Volkmanns contracture - Volkmann's contracture occurs when there is a lack of blood flow (ischemia) to the forearm. This usually occurs when there is increased pressure due to swelling, a condition called compartment syndrome - causing them to become stiff (scarred) and shortened. Bone/skeletal traction - Skeletal traction is applied to the affected structure by a metal pin or wire inserted into the structure and attached to traction ropes. Skeletal traction is often used when continuous traction is desired to immobilize, position, and align a fractured bone properly during the healing process.
